Dueling Courtesy?

why do duels have rules or "gentlemen's agreement" not to do certain things? I have heard this in chats all the time as i run to get my undaunted pledges...."dude, wtf, you used [insert op ability/potion/armor]?!"

i thought;
a duel is a fight between 2 people. 3-2-1, FIGHT, the winner is the last one alive?

I think the only "hard rule" should apply to bystanders: don't heal duelers. Don't stand around while people are dueling throwing out BOL or aoe heals.

Between the 2 people dueling, negotiate terms beforehand, or anything goes. Unless agreed upon in advance, there are no cheap tactics or cheap counters.

Usually the only rules in dueling among high end players (I.E. outside the stormhaven undaunted enclave) is
    1. No resource cost poison
    2. No immov pots

These are rules because they are both available to everyone and are equally effective for everyone. Therefore, if one person used them, the other person would too and neither player would be happy about it.

And immov pots can get expensive...

Yep. Two men enter...one man leaves. Know if you duel me I will use defensive ults, cost poisons and throw sand in your eyes. Anything less is pure scrubbery. Don't wanna face certain gear setups/ults/skills? Don't duel. PvP might not be for you.

Is there a way to turn off duel requests? Lotro had this, don't know if there is an option. I enjoy watching some fights, but don't appreciate the requests. Twice I have accepted thinking it was the dungeon que. Funny thing is I disappeared seconds after the fight started.

Certain magsorc told me that using my ultimate (ballista) in the beggining wasn't allowed by the dueling courtesy rules.

Droping his mines before the duel starts was completely correct for him, of course.

Hmm I didn't think you could heal or buff people who were dueling. Would be funny if each person had a designated healer for the fight.

things that are considered not very gentlemen like are: resource poisons, viper, selene, velindreth, soul assault, Eye of the Storm just to name a few. Things that are knowingly overperforming that would give you a clear advantage in a duell. But duells are bs anyway you can set your cp for example to make you very effective against sorcs and only duell sorcs for that day giving you a clear advantage to someone who has a overland pvp build who has to take magic and physical damage and has his cp set for that. Thats why i dont duell.

This is the summum of 'obviousness'

First, nothing that you could use in your build is giving 'you' a clear advantage over your opponent, since your opponent can slot it as well and use it against you. It's about using the tools you feel comfortable with, that are available for EVERY player out there. So there is no real 'clear' advantage.

Second, and more obvious, isnt the point of a duel to find your advantage over the other player to end up killing him/her?

Im sorry but if im going to duel, im gonna use every resources at hand to try to put down my enemy, that includes poisons, nasty ultimates, nasty skills and everything i can throw at him. It's not cheating, it's not unfair, and its nothing to see with 'fighting with honor'. You fight for winning, be clever and use all your resources. They put them there for you to use. Don't listen to silly salty players xD
