Maintenance for the week of January 5:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – January 5
• NA megaservers for maintenance – January 7, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 10:00AM EST (15:00 UTC)
• EU megaservers for maintenance – January 7, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 10:00AM EST (15:00 UTC)

Does the game really need 4-8 hour maintenances every week?

Is this really necessary? Does every other MMO does this? Or is it just ESO? I don't really understand why it takes so much time if it is done weekly. The worst part is that in the EU the maintenance is done the entire morning, while on NA it is done overnight when everyone is sleeping.

I know a rant wont change (insert bad word here because im angry), but come on... 1/4 of the day wasted on maintenance.

I'm pretty sure ZoS only do it because they believe it is necessary.
From a customer service point of view it wouldn't make sense to take the servers down - people who cant play are unhappy.
From a commercial point of view it wouldn't make sense to take the servers down - people who aren't playing aren't buying from the crown store

So yes, its probably really necessary.

In Australia it is done during the prime playing time of late afternoon to early evening. At least you have your own server.

I would guess they relay on window servers and huge MSSQL databases. As long as they don't migrate to a more usable server environment they need time to do this *** Microsoft maintaince ***.

If they use Linux they need some better devs and admins.

If I would need 4 hours every week to keep our support and billing systems running I would be without a job in week two

Most (perhaps all) MMOs I've played take their servers down for 5 minutes then put them back up (even when it's a big update patch), and I don't see why ESO is different than the others.

I'd rather have a 15 minute maintenance every day than one every week that takes an entire morning, or even afternoon for some.

They had a hard time a few years ago. But since they started the migration to Linux micropots they are running very stable.

But, hey. Why should zenimax read the public dev blog of ccp to learn from the mistakes otters have done in the past?

Look at it this way: If they're fixing stuff, then it's necessary. Other MMO's have weekly/bi-weekly maintenance. I've played games that have had maintenance twice a week.

If 1/4 of your day is wasted because a game has maintenance, then perhaps a shift in priorities is in order here.

Never mentioned it was my day being wasted. However, it does suck having to wait that much time to do my writs and dailies, which I could do it in the morning and have the rest of the day off to do whatever I want other than ESO.

I imagine that its similar to gun or car engine maintenance. Without regular checkups and tuneups and cleaning there might be an explosion when you lease expect it.
As a casual player I was satisfied that at one point I had a char max level and near max crafting with almost all motifs and I pretty much lost interest. Then ESO discovered DLC's and now my main is just a wanabe and I am happily pulled back into the game.

honestly - to me it seems that the engine might be the issue...i only experienced one time when they didnt do maintenance and the following days the game played much worse...maybe the engine is not optimized for the sheer amounts of content and people (what would be strange for an mmo tough)?

@stewhead2ub17_ESO maybe you never played another mmo but most do not take 5-8hr long to finish maintenance, and I know you are just trolling others that are angry because you have nothing better to do why else would you be in the forums during maintenance time? stop being a *** and show some empathy to your follow gamers!

Minor? Ok. I'll tell u something. I work for one of Germany largest telcos. Together with about 6 other administrators, I am responsible for the backend systems of our complete customer support and billing software. Shop, online invoice service, self service, login systems for all subscriber lines, voip, ....

Guess how long our regular maintaince windows are

Not more than 15 minutes per week. Every 3 month about 2 hours.

And you call 5 hours each week "minor"?

@tbe_loki yes minor. 5 hrs a week is a minor inconvenience. I'm not a tech guy but I suspect whatever it is you're doing is different than what occurs with a MMO. Since you felt the need to list your pedigree I can only wait with great anticipation for your MMO to come out so there's only a 15 minute inconvenience window. Grow up.

In a different business, nobody would accept this kind of pathetic service. Closing down during working hours (EU) every Monday for hardly an accurate amount of time?

People would go to a different company providing better product.

But they know there is nowhere else to go, that's why they get away with this and that is why they will continue with this low quality, unprofessional practice until hopefully there will be something on the market that wipes them out.

It would be nice to see some strong competition that forces them to finally sort out this pathetic mess or decompose.
