Black Dyes

Hello all,

I currently have some grey dyes which looks like black. But I never seen a legit "Black" dye. Can someone help me to find a really black dye? Like it is really black, because I have Colharbour Black but it is not black. It is grey. I have found in my achievements list by Alchemist some Toxic Achievement where you get a black dye. I am aiming to get that one but not sure if it's really black. I hope someone can help me!

Thanks in advance.

Maybe Legate Black? I don't have it, so I do not know how black it is. The Toxicologist one from alchemy is a dark green if I remember right.

Oh yeah that one I have seen too, legate black. But it is from PvP right? I have to be a some rank to get that but no idea what rank. And yes that one Toxicologist! Aww is it dark green? :/ I should buy some new glasses. Thanks for the info!

Coldharbour Ash Black and Legate Black are the only two that exist in the game. I don't have Legate Black but I heard it's the better of the two

Legate Black takes a ton of PVPing (that's why I don't have it either, I'm only rank 21 on my most played character).

The Toxicologist green is a very dark green, a bit shiny. It looks really nice on some pieces of armour - I use it as highlights on Yokudan pieces (since that motif uses serpenty images).

Ah, thanks for sharing the info! Well, I might be doing PvP even tho I am not planning to aim on PvP in ESO. But for that one Dye I will ^^.

Depending on the style of the gear it may come out as black or grey. All colors behave this way, several styles just don't dye well.

Can confirm that Coldharbour Black is awesome on a lot of things, like robes and the metal parts of the Golden Saint outfit, but I think that certain outfits are just not built to dye well, like the Seducer outfit just sort of sucks in general dye-wise and always looks like paint that's been rubbed partway off. But Coldharbour Black is a matte finish, or at least, definitely not glossy.

ESO's colour palette is very washed out. All blacks look grey. I use Reshade to correct that. The black in the screenshots below is Coldharbour Ash Black. As you can tell, the red (Daedric Red) and gold (Ayleid Gold) look a lot richer with Reshade as well.

Also note that colours are richer on metalic materials. Leather and cloth will always appear grey.

Coldharbour Ash Black is almost identical. Almost everyone has it unlocked too (you get it by completing the main story). Grinding for Legate takes ages.

"almost" :) OP asked for a really black dye and i gave the answer. Legate Black is not only more black than coldharbour ash it also has a shine to it that only the best dyes have. If you are passionate about how your armours look and u want the best dyes then u have to start pvping, its no other way.

I could be wrong, but doesn't Coldharbour Black also shine? I know a few of the other super easy ones shine as well (I think Thalmor Black was one of them).

I don't have ESO+ to test right now (I know the bottom part of the Ordinator robe costume shows correct colour and shine).

Coldharbour ash black has a slight sepia undertone on many items. Its also not as potent as Legate Black, it looks washed out on certain items.
I dont really understand why they locked the best black dye behind relatively high pvp rank. After all, black is a very basic color and is used pretty often. Other basic stuff like caltrops and vigor is a joke, but this dye is out of the reach for the majority of pve players.

It's a basic color yes, but as in most mmo's it is a highly sought after color so therefore usualy locked behind cost, grinding, acievements etc. I do pvp, but think it should have been locked behinds other means as a lot of people really hate pvp.

Almost all of the really vibrant colors are PvP achievements, some of them, like the Legate's Black which is easily the best black in the game, require a huge amount of PvPing which many prefer not to do. I honestly hate the dye system. It was the laziest way possible they could have created awards for achievements instead of giving you anything tangible for them. If all the dyes were simply unlocked from jump I'd probably buy more ESO accounts! LOL

    Hello
    I have 3 - Coldharbor Ash Black/Thalmor Black/Obsidian Black.
Coldharbor looks the best - use it a lot on crafted sets and is a nice matt black. Try it with Orc/Deadric/Bosmer styles with gold or green highlights. All heavy. Light and medium gives a lighter black.
Thalmor Black/Obsidian Black look slightly grey onscreen.
Seen Legate Black and this one is shiney/gloss look.

I love to collect dyes and I can say that Legate Black and Coldharbour Ash Black is your choice when it comes to some quality black dye. Some other in the grey section might turn out in an ok black hue depending on what style and material your armor is in.

Now I have to grind at least rank 39, those black and white colors are awesome. I've got juli white, but it has a blue-ish hue and it doesnt work well with some other colors.
Btw is there a comparison between emp red and bg red? Im currently working towards the 1000 kills achieve and it would be really disappointing if its bleak like regicide red or nirn red.

I will say that the Toxicologist hue is still worth working up to. It's dark green, but it looks like a darker black than some of the actual blacks, depending on what it's applied to. My assassin tends to wear the Toxicologist green with some brighter color (red or gold), and the effect is usually pretty cool. Just apply it wisely, lest you look like you're walking around in a pleather catsuit.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"
