The pets can hold aggro, but they can't override a player taunt.

If you are using Puncture, Inner Fire, Frost staff heavy attack with the Trifocus passive or a charge ability while wearing the Tormentor set, you should have no problem holding aggro with your taunt no matter what pet is being used. The pet will not override or interfere with an actual taunt ability (which, yeah, means it isn't an actual taunt, because using a second taunt would cause the boss/mob to get taunt immunity and you'd know if that happened, but it doesn't therefore the pet doesn't have an actual taunt.)

That being said, if you aren't using an actual taunt ability listed above, your pet will do a pretty good job of holding aggro, especially the clannfear.

Wait a moment -- is taunt immunity a real thing at this time? How does it work?

Yes, taunt immunity exists. Basically, the tank taunts. Then someone else taunts, usually a dps or healer who mistakenly eqipped a taunt. The Boss focuses on the 2nd taunted and is,briefly immune to any other taunt. The tank can't retaunt to take aggro back until that period wears off. Hence the phrase "You taunt it, you tank it," when dealing with someone else using a taunt in a dungeon.

This is to prevent situations where two tanks could trade taunt on a melee boss to prevent certain mechanics.

The only boss where this is an actual mechanic is Sellestrix. One of her mechanics is that she sheds taunt, which the game does by applying a phantom taunt on her. If the tank retains too quickly, she'll become briefly immune to taunts and start attacking at random.

learn to control your pet. if its off doing something and you arent aware of whaere, or why or what? thats a problem with you, not the pet. There are basic "attack" and "stop attack" commands for the pet. look into them.

no pet commands on console (that I'm aware of).
