The big news, though folks who pay close attention will already know this, is that transmogrification of items is indeed being worked on for ESO. Matt explains that it’s not a very easy thing to add, but that they’re working hard on it anyway. What this means is that soon™ you’ll be able to take an item whose looks you like, and add those looks to an item whose stats you prefer. This is different than the current “motif” system crafters use to make items look the way they want, in so much that it allows a user total control over their stats and their looks.

soon™ - That made me laugh out loud!

Few things to say on this.

First- Credit to ZOS where credit is due. They are implementing a feature that needs to be implemented, and will greatly improve the game. It can't be here fast enough.

That said. I will bet you right now they will screw it up. I will bet you.

It either won't work in the beginning, or will delete out your armor or some crap.

And I haven't read the full details on it so this may already be confirmed, but I will bet it will be charged for or they will attempt to monetize it in some way.

In addition to that, there may be another catch such as "only works with certain sets", or "only 'x' amount of transmogrifications allowed per day".

Who knows with these people. lol

you already have a TRANSMOG system ready to go... it's called a COSTUME. ZOS might easily be able to create a "template' by which a player could save the appearance of any actual worn items, to a "custom" costume that could be accessed like any other costume (maybe even named by the player).

Maybe I'm cynical, but I suspect much of the feet dragging on this directly relates to crown store sales. If nothing else they could sell custom costume slots, but in any event they'd have to step up their game with some of the crappy costumes they sell in the stores.

well cosutumes are not mogs :D
if ZOs want to add mog system they have to use almost the same methods what WOW uses. Except to allow us to mog everything what we want to mog.

I wouldn't mind that. At the moment there isn't really any reason to sub other than the crafting bag,

Yeah agree with this guy, unquestionably they will Zos this up (that's bad) it'll be you need a gazillion tempers/crowns some other bs, there'll be catches and caveats galore. Zos if you're paying attention (still doubtful) this is how players want this to work - Right click > Convert gear to X style (obviously you must know the style motif so motifs don't become useless), in exactly the same way players who own the imperial edition can convert anything to imperial style. That simple. Please get this right.

Not if they make it so you can only Transmog to motifs you have.
So if a piece of gear drops that doesn't match my Argonian armor, I could change it to match. That way I don't have to dress like a filthy Wood Elf.

wha? why WOW? ever seen the NEVERWINTER (not a great MMO btw) system? Same as described basically. The existing costume system simply replaced the APPEARANCE of worn gear with something else, while in reality you are still using your unmodified worn gear. Allowing the player to create a "custom" costume, to include ALL equipment slots that is EVERYTHING) using actual gear pieces, creates a new market for crafters, motifs, etc. as well.

But instead, I'm sure we'll get something crappy and ineffectual in a few years, right after spellcrafting ;)

Well, the way it is worded, you take one item that you like the look of, grab its appearance and apply it to another item. So, wouldn't that actually make motifs MORE useful and wanted? Because, then, you can craft a dummy item just for the style you like, then grab its appearance and throw it on the crappy looking dropped item with cool stats. I could actually see a rise in people buying items just because they have the appearance they like... a new market for crafters!

I had the same thought. They can't make motifs pointless for the original reason they exist. This is the only reasonable implementation. Setting aside crown store sales..

Different from current motif system worries me. Sounds like you'll need something new to do this and the motifs we've been working on collecting will still be virtually useless. Hope that's not the case.

They could tie in some aspect (and likely will, as soon as they get that "monitization" job slot filled) of a transmog system to the crown store (again a blank costume template). Creating a transmog system to duplicate the appearance of actual items would be a HUUUUUGE boost to the crafting community, snd make motifs VERY in demand with one stroke.

There have been multiple threads on the same announcement.

I do recall that Spell Crafting was being worked on at one point, near 3 years ago. Lets not forget Zos announced over 3 years ago they wanted to add jewelry crafting.

Not trying to poo on any party, but I will believe it when I see it.

Yes, what exactly is the story on no jewelry crafting? That seems pretty straight forward.

Last I heard was the concern of being OP. idk. I do a decent job of keeping up with what Zos has to say, but that is something I heard through the grapevine. I do not expect it to come anytime soon even though it would give an actual boost to crafting viability.

Part of the issue is probably the upgrading of jewelry, just a guess. Currently gold jewelry has to be farmed in vet trials, obtained from PvE and PvP leaderboards or purchased from the gold vender.

Let's predict how this will play out:

Step 1, you buy a "transmog stone" from the crown store for 3k, then apply it to the item you want to transmog, then the transaction has a change of randomly changing to another piece of armor in your inventory.
