Haven't played since original release - Templar, Dragonknight, or new class?

As the title says, I haven't really played significantly since the original release. Morrowind got me intrigued enough to come back, so I'm interested in playing that content. I also don't think I played much or any of the Orsinium or other content, so I'm interested in seeing that stuff as well.

I have a level 50 Templar and a level 50 Dragonknight, each with decent (not great or end-game) gear and nice blank talent trees that have been reset. Or I could start a new class (Warden doesn't interest me, unless someone is convinced it's really super great. Never was big into pet management). Mostly I solo PvE. Occasionally I will group or do PvP, but not often.

What do you all think? If it's Templar or DK, any build suggestions or general strategies? I imagine the classes have changed a lot. I'm also open to other class suggestions. I don't generally like squishy pure casters, but I am open to persuasion.

Thanks.

If you have the gear from around the original release... Oh god - it's so outdated now. I rarely promote any sort of guides etc. but definitely Alcast has some stuff that is worth looking into (click) in terms of good PvE builds.

(PS. You probably have some old Provisioning materials many collectors are interested in now.)

Templar, warden, dk, nb are all fine choices for RP.

If you want to be useful in dungeons, trials and pvp. Then sorc.

I don't think threads like this are the place to express personal frustration over class balance.

For solo PVE, I believe magicka nightblade is the most enjoyable/versatile if you like the playstyle. For dungeons, class doesn't matter.

For solo PvE class, race and build don't really matter unless you're trial-oriented.

Personally I'd recommend creating a new character entirely down to what you fancy and then using that character to refresh your memory of the game and learn what's changed, before considering logging in your existing characters. That way you'll ease your way in much more enjoyably than if you jump in at the deep end trying to work out what your skills are etc.

The biggest change of course will be One Tamriel so you might want to swot up on that but basically it simply means that all the zones are the same level so you are suitably scaled to the content whenever and wherever you go including cross-alliance.

For mag warden, no pet management needed. Just refresh the netch as you would refresh any other buff, and don't slot the bear.

I say having one character from each class is the way to go. Also, the game is much more alt friendly now so leveling alts is easier. One thing I will suggest is getting a character to CP160 now, so that all characters are CP160 or better when they reach L50. This way the gear you get or make will never be outleveled (CP160 is gear cap and that is probably never going to change)

Compared to release, Hybrids are out, you are now all in on Magic or Stamina. Each zone drops a set for Magic or Stamina or Health, so getting some nice gear sets is not all that hard to do. Plus, you can get Jewelry in these sets to the possibility of having two 5 piece sets is good. We also have 2 Piece Monster Sets that drop from Group Dungeons, but I would not say these are all that required to have for most PvE.

Wardens are an interesting class. Not quite sure what to do with my Warden, but I do have fun with him. Its not all that much Pet Management with the Warden, as you really only have one Pet, the Bear. And it's a permanent spawn now, at least once you morph the skill. It also takes up an Ultimate Slot. I tend to ignore my bear and let him wander around and do what he wants. I mostly have him out to get the boost from the Necroptence Set which gives a HUGE boost to Magic if you have a pet active. Necropotence is one of the Dropped sets I talked about above, you can find this in Rivenspire.

Oh, yea, Zones, they are all unlocked now so you don't have to follow in the lock step of the Alliance Factions any more. In fact, other than PvP, Alliances are really not a thing any more. Well, RP might have an impact but the game will let you play anywhere at any level.

    I play as a magplar DD/Healer. I don't use meta builds,
run with 5 piece julianos, 3 seducer and 3 willpower (pretty easy to get) and can easily do all vet dungeons as healer and DD. So you are going to be fine! Normal trials are easy too, you may face difficulties with vet trials, but if you just like to play casually, don't even sweat :) , you should be fine.

Do what you find interesting. Warden i wasnt the least bit interested in myself when i came back and i went back to my templar. (you mught change your mind though who knows!)

If you like dk and templar both are perfectly viable for pve both solo and group play. I would say if you are just going to do quests and explore the content, dont worry about starting a new character because solo pve doesnt require intense builds and theres a lot of room to play and experiment with the skill changes there rather than wasting time levelling 50 levels to get used to the game again. Just be aware you may reset your skills a few times before youre happy with them.

I second alcasthq.com those are some pretty nice builds, and he has a lot of suggestions for lower cp/starting out gear for each build so you dont have to have minmax everything.

Having both let's you setup a tank/DPS build on the DK and healer/dps build on the Templar so you will never lack for dungeon groups if you want.

If you aren't CP 160, getting there is nice so you could start to find endgame gear. Save any Undaunted keys until you are CP 160.

I've been pretty torn on whether or not to just start a new character entirely, as some of you have suggested. I always thought the idea of a heavy or medium armor, weapon wielding "battle mage" style sorcerer would be interesting, given how flexible this game is with skills and equipment. Has anyone had success along those lines?

Stamsorcs are incredibly fun imo, also incredibly good.

Traditional stamsorc is medium armor, dw + bow

Lots of successful Stam sorcs, in PvE and PvP. I've played one since back in 1.4 when it was more of a hybrid build before Stam had more options. I think of mine as a lightning berserker sustaining myself with dark rituals.

If you are looking to make a hybrid, you will have a tougher time but it can be fun for solo and you could do run dungeons though it wouldn't be optimal.

Jack had a good video that gives a baseline of how to build hybrids. https://youtu.be/qF3LaYfNTaU

Every class is fun in its own way.
There is no 'pet management' with the Warden. His dps skill tree just resemble animals. They are cast like any other spell, though. The Bear ulti attacks whatever you attack, or attacks you.
If you have been gone that long and are just returning, I would recommend starting a new character to experience all the changes fresh.

Hope you enjoy the game, OP!

I really enjoy my dragon knight. Most skills, (except the heal) has great animations too.
I have not tried stamina but with full magic you can do both tanking and dps depending on mood and gear slotted.

If your Tank/mage interested go dk

warden seem to be Healer/dps so if thats more your combination try that.

I have a stamina Night blade too, hes great fun aswell.

Never gave templar a honest shot, just didnt like the animations.
