Magicka sustain compromise

Amorpho

I have not done any serious PVE since the launch of Morrowind as I have been completely absorbed by Battlegrounds. However, in my occasional PVE I realised just how much harder to sustain my Magicka Sorc is. I can solo overland mobs and sustain with heavy attacks without having to change gear/enchants (I wear 5 Julianos, 3 Willpower and 2 Ilambris - 5 light, 1 heavy and 1 medium). However, I dread the day I will do Vet Maelstrom in this patch.

So, I wonder, what kind of compromises (if at all) did you have to do, particularly for solo PVE? Did you start using poisons? Did you swap some spell damage enchants for magicka regen or lower magicka cost? Did you change gear altogether?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Self apply ele drain, use magicka pots on cooldown and use magicka drain poisons, swap spell dmg glyph with regen or cost reduction glyph, when u run out of magicka go into overload mode. No gear change required as that would result in massive dps loss.

having issues myself, using magicka regen glyphs and im thinking about Necropotence Set

now question:why should i keep buying the expensive motifs from store if i must use droped sets who look like crap?

this patch killed sustain and devs should think it over

I am already using elemental drain and chugging pots like there is no tomorrow. I think my other only option would be starting to use drain poison on front bar and see what that does. I really don't want to start swopping spell damage enchants with magicka regen ones. Has anyone simply given up Thief for Atronach mundus?

another option would be using witchmother's brew(gives good regen) instead of max stat blue food, but u will need to adjust max HP to prevent getting one shotted by certain mechanics. Magic poison is ok ish but very expensive in long run so the only ideal place to use them is in trials.

theres also some heavy attack builds out there u can take a look if interested. In this patch heavy attack generates a huge amount of magicka with the help of tenacity CP perk.

In the new meta you must have Lich for backbar. Deal with it :)
So it will be 2 Ilambris (top sorc monster set, no doubt, heavy head and med shoulders), frontbar with Julianos/BSW/Scathing/Netch/Spinner/whatever offensive (all light) and backbar with Lich (all light).
For PVP you can switch backbar to Seducer.

For my magSorc (pet build) I placed my CP like this:

    https://alcasthq.com/eso-magicka-sorcerer-pet-build-pve/

I do however use Orzorga's Red Frothgar in a lot of situations instead of blue food or tri-food if I want more sustain. I loose 7k mag (from 50k to 43k) but increase mag regen from 700 to 1400. If I'm running content with a good group and elemental drain etc. I go for max resources.

    http://esoacademy.com/recipes/orzorgas-red-frothgar/

Other than that I didn't change anything and the build still rocks in vMA.

For trials and such I can´t give you any tips (since I haven´t played my magsorc in trials). But for vma I might be able to help you a Little.

On my magsorc (A breton, not masterrace but good enough) I use the following:
    * 5 Necropotence (petbuild)
    * Ilambris
    * Lightning vma backbar (any trait is usefull, otherwise use a random Sharp)
    * Sharp inferno frontbar (crafted one)
    * 3 IA jewels with Spell dmg enchant on all.

Can sustain fine on magsorc in vma. I try to finish of mobs with mages fury (Think it´s the one that gives magicka back on kill) or with destro attack (to get 3,6k magicka back on kill with destruction staff ability)

You don´t need lich to sustain in PvE :expressionless: As a magsorc you can almost go full "offensive" and still sustain fine (unless you spam *** like a madman ofc)

Hi i use more or less the same gear. I respecced my attribute points into more health and started using the witch mother brew drink as my food buff. Helps a lot with sustain, but still throw a heavy attack here and there if I have to. I found it more simple than get new gear or glyphs, I can easily respec attributes again if situation change in a new patch.

@Amorpho dont use poison if you use wall of elements. Poisons make wall disappear and you end up spending 4 poisons in 8s. bugged as ***

On my magNB i can sustain fine. your biggest sustain tool is the arcane well cp passive and KB with destro staff, so you should always try to kill with destro and not sorc abilities.
And for bosses, overload still restores mag, right? so should be that much of a problem

Anyways, I took my Mag DK out for vet trials last week. Same setup as before, but with Sun instead of BSW. Full damage glyphs.

Surprisingly, barely had issues sustaining: Battle Roar to regain Magicka and while gaining Ulti for the next one, my pot was up again. Did use a few HA here and there, but not many (1-2 per boss battle)

Though I did notice my Magicka going down much quicker, and that I actually had to look at my Magicka bar instead of just blasting fire everywhere

I run a Necro pet build with my sorc for vMA runs and 4 man dungeons. I've tried a couple things to help sustain such as ele drain+ 1 magicka recovery glyph, witch mothers+ recov glyph, etc. I settled on max health/magicka food+ necro+willpower+Illambris with 2 recovery glyphs and an additional heavy attack in my rotation and I no longer have any issues with sustain. It's important to note that due to the Necro set I have a large magicka pool and also that heavy attacks are essentially mandatory now. Practicing your rotation is the key though. Just button mashing through content will jam you up. I was worried at first that my DPS would take a big hit but you gotta keep in mind that no magicka=0 DPS. I can attack consistently all through any battle and now feel more powerful than ever really with the CP changes. I've been running dual lightning staff too with the exploiter passive to make the most of my DPS. If you have crafted staves, use a charged on the back bar with wall of elements and sharpened on the front. You'll melt enemies. I'm not max CP, I play casually, and am not amazing by any means but I can solo several vet dungeons and have completed many many vMA runs with this set up.

Absolutely. I don't mind a heavy attack build as long as I'm the one that decided to play that way. being forced into it is dumb. especially in a game where we were told we could play the way we wanted to.

When you listed your gear, you listed your problem. You have to invest in sustain somewhere.
    You have some options:
    - Utilize Elemental Drain (magickasteal for 300mag/s)
    - Uitlize cost reduction glyphs
    - Utilize heavy attacks into your damage rotation
    - Invest in Tenacity CP node, along with heavy attacks

The bolded options are the easiest to implement and most effective for sustain. These options will allow you to usually get away with high-damage spec'd gear. Sorcerers have no natural sustain, so you have to make a sacrifice somewhere since you have are damage perks. Also, when rearranging your CP, remember that CP percentages are floored (rounded) to the lowest whole percentage (jump points) when calculations are made in-game, regardless of any decimal values that are shown.

I use Witchmother's Brew and put a few points into health. In vMA I found it's necessary for me to apply Elemental Drain on any target that isn't going to die from a couple attacks. You can always use the speed sigil for some extra regen if needed. For a sorc you might be better off using Harness Magicka on rounds heavy on magic damage instead of Hardened Ward.

On my magplar I also went vamp and by using Witchmother's Brew I basically traded in 4k max magicka for about 700-800 regen.

You now have to cast a skill on your Lich bar to activate the proc.

I don't know why ZoS made this change.

For the most part all that changed is heavy attacks are added to the rotation. That's been it from most of all the theory crafters.

I had noticed alcast has put up some build information that uses the witchmothers food for max health and magicka and magicka regen and adding some health attributes. I expect it's a slight dps drop but probably good for most players since most of us aren't trying to be the #1 dps on the server.

I don't find that my sustain is dramatically worse, but I use 3 piece seducer and regularly heavy attack anyway (fire staff applies some nice debuffs that make my rotation stronger, in addition to giving back magicka.)

The only time I really feel lacking resources is whenever I try to use Bolt Escape.

That skill was so ridiculously over nerfed so many times it just isn't useful anymore. Casting it more than one time in PvP is basically a death sentence because it gimps you so much.

What I'd like to see is the removal of penalties for subsequent casts of Bolt Escape. The skill is already expensive. And this game was supposedly built around the idea of "no cool downs." Making a skill cost more if you cast it more is virtually the same thing as a cool down. The whole point of "no cool downs" is I can use my skills whenever I want as long as I have the resources.
