~Ping Spikes Every Night~

Just look at this ping! I live in NA i play in NA and have a good cable company every other game i play i can play perfectly five so tell me why am i getting 9777 ping almost every night?

This isn't just a pvp thing for me its happening outside cyrodiil even while solo fishing my ping will jump to 5000+ which makes it impossible to fish.

Is there something i am missing? Can i do something about it or is this game that broken and only seem to target me with issues?!

Your connection doesn't matter that much. Cyrodiil is laggy because of server side: waiting messages from the other players and performing the computation requires time. The more players on server or in the specific area the more lag. Usually no CP campaigns lag less than CP even if both are pop locked due to the more complicated calculations involving CP.

Just cause other games play ok doesn't mean the route to the servers are the same and cause you get it outside of PvP also. Can mean there is an issue down the pipeline from where you are.

I´ve had pingspikes every day now in PvE as well (roughly around the same time) while doing vMSA. Usually do a run or 2 when I get home from work and on stage 7-8 I crash every single time (get 4k+ping).

Myself and a few others are getting the same issue. but they are lazy to make a post. I made a post before checking yours. And yes, everyday at night I get the same spike lag, with 999 ping each 5-10 seconds every time. Someone has mentioned about data mining from ESO after the huge update we got.

Generally your ping jumps ca be to do with your isp, various reasons, google what can causes my ping to jump.. thousands of reasons, doesnt mean its teh server side, easiest way to tell when its server side, if your on voice chat with a grp of people, and they all experience the same ping at the same time.. then you can garrenttee its the server, only time ive experienced this issue , was on 2x ap event a while back, (but im on EU)

Yeah i don't believe its 100% the server cause when i was getting ping spikes i asked in zone chat and a few people were having it but also a few more were at like 50 ping so i think it might be my end.

LOL... there are still known bugs and other issues from the earliest PC days that still haven't been acknowledged by a ZOS rep, let alone fixed. If you're expecting anyone from ZOS to respond to this post, much less make any effort toward looking into the issue and fixing it, prepare to be disappointed.

I cancelled my sub because of this. I'm sick of it. And it doesn't just happen in Cyrodiil, and even if it does, that's no excuse to let it stay that way.

A shame really. I really love this game, but the ping spikes is very frustrating.............

I also canceled my sub. The constant ping fluctuation alongside the frame drops when queued for dungeon finder is just ridiculous. And to all those who say it isnt server side.....get real look at the track record of ESO. problem after problem. i continuously got ping of 4k while this was happening i was like... screw it ill run a ping scan as this happens through a website.... oh look no problem on my end. as a person who studies the creation of video games and everything that goes into them i have gone through any steps that would resolve the issue on my end to no avail. so therefore it is on zenimax/bethesdas side.

All of you people that point out how it must be the complainers fault that they are having issues not ZOS should simply think before opening your mouth. If you're in a voice chat and suddenly get 9999 ping in game yet voice chat keeps working, that might be a server issue. When various people are complaining about something and it's not happening to you, it doesn't mean that it's not happening. It simply means that it's not happening to you! Hey ZOS get you **** together. This is unacceptable. Show some integrity, start handing out service time credit for your failure to handle your **** properly!

not going to work i listen to music playlists while i play and when i played battlefield 1 i listened to music playlists on youtube and my highest ping on bf1 was around 90 my lowest being in the 20s and i averaged around 40-50 ping while playing pf1 and having youtube in the backround this is not a problem for me the problem is on zenimaxs end.

Almost two weeks after the last post in this thread. I've been discussing this problem across multiple threads for quite a while now, so thought I'd drop a line here.

Still happening. If anything it's actually getting worse. It starts the second it hits AT&T's nodes, at least two of which cannot be avoided by any route-changing (e.g., VPN). I don't know if Zenimax can do anything about it, but it's completely ruining the game for me, some of my friends, many posters here, and likely hundreds more who aren't posting.

This sucks. If it's fixable, please fix it. If it's not, please acknowledge that we can stop maintaining hope that ESO will eventually become playable again and move on. If it can't be fixed, we're going to quit either way. It's just a matter of how much animosity we leave with and the effect that may or may not have on future projects from Zenimax.

I agree 100%, if you cant fix it just tell me so I can stop hoping to play again. The silence is deafening. My ticket got escalated to 'advanced support' 3 days ago and they have not sent me one update on it since then. I ask every day for an update and nothing. I disconnect within one minute of logging on now and just quickly check my craft researches and that is all I can do at this point. Also un-subbing, unfortunately my sub for this month came out the day my disconnects got so bad I finally submitted the ticket. What are the chances they will refund me? Sure not gonna hold my breath on that one!
  • cr4mf157

Is this the response they gave you when they "escalated" it?

"Upon researching this issue further our developers are currently investigating reports of some players encountering higher than normal latency issues due to the connect path they are using. As this is something our developers will be working with ISPs to resolve I'm unfortunately unable to provide a timeframe as to when exactly this will be permanently resolved however rest assured that we will look in to this further."

That's what I got quite a few days ago and no response to anything since. It still shows as "updated". I'll probably try to run another ticket through. I optimistically (foolishly) gave them one more month sub in the midst of all this. I figured something might change. I should have known better, so that's on me.

The game is just so good. Way better than anything else comparable out there right now. I just wish it would actually work instead of just being a source of maddening frustration. They sure won't see another $15 from me until (if) it ever does work. I guess I'll just check in to do crafting every once in a while for the rest of this month then uninstall if it's not better by then.

I hear Wildstar is slightly less of a turd now than it was at launch. :)

and nothing from the 'advanced team' 3 days now....

In this case it is "the network". A lot of us have been watching the routes very, very closely over long periods of time. It seems that for everyone, regardless of the route followed to the ESO servers, the breakdown begins the second it hits AT&T's nodes and then gets progressively worse.

Interestingly, the last hop in Garland just before it hits the servers shows wild latency swings up and down every second. I'm pretty sure that everyone goes through that node regardless of where they're coming from and what route they follow in. I have to assume that it's part of their hosting.

All of that said, we don't know how much of the problem comes from Zenimax's servers proper as they have taken great pains to make sure that their servers won't respond to any diagnostics. We also have no idea how much influence Zenimax can have when considering the problematic nodes on the way in. We do know that they have claimed to have "fixed" such routing issues in the past, even as recently as last week.

We just don't have enough information to make an absolutely correct assessment, nor has Zenimax seen fit to provide us with any of that missing info, for better or worse. It sucks and is probably going to continue to suck until everyone with connection problems quits and there is nobody left to complain. If we're in the minority, they'll probably go on like nothing happened. If, as I suspect, we aren't, we'll see how much effect that ends up having.

As a network engineer myself (in Operations) I deal with providers like AT&T daily (and have access to a significant number of their nodes). I can say in dealing with them on a daily basis that it is unlike AT&T to sit idly when they have a router problem. The wonderful thing about routers is that they route... I tend to design/manage architectures that provide a high degree of redundancy and availability, as does AT&T. What's the theory here? Is it really the router, marginal hardware, route flapping, link errors, overutilization, sub optimal asymmetric routing, etc.? I can tell you first hand, AT&T is a provider, and there are SLAs that are not being met if the troubleshooting is correct. It's up to the customer (ZOS?) to contact their provider AT&T and complain. One would think it'd be a simple matter to change protocol costs, move LSPs, etc. to get to a "protect" path?

This isn't isolated to AT&T's nodes, this is happening across all clusters - NA & EU, consoles and personal computing devices.

I've tried VPN routing to EU via US East Coast (I play from South Africa) - lag spikes, high ping (400+ as expected) but account login is super fast, gameplay at 400-500 ping, frustrating but doable.

I've tried routing directly to Germany via VPN, lag spikes, ping 250-500, frequent 9999+, account authentication takes ages.

I've tried via my landline ADSL and ISP, I've tried via LTE to circumvent my ISP, I've tried with VPN and without, I've tried with no-addons enabled, I've tried with my usual add-ons enabled.

Nothing makes a tangible difference. I have fibre coming online in a few weeks, if it doesn't improve I'm dropping my ESO and VPN subscription and putting this game in the trash heap where it belongs.

I'd like to think that you are correct, here. It being up to the customer is exactly what I'm thinking. The question is, given the exact location(s) and nature(s) of the problem(s), is ZOS, in fact, "the customer" in the situation? If they are, then they need to suck it up and call tech support like the rest of us (haha). If not, then one of two things needs to happen. Either we or they need to identify who has standing to get the problem fixed and get it done, or we need to get confirmation that it can't or won't ever be fixed, and which point we can abandon this game immediately and start looking for something else that fills the same desires. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything on that front as of yet and I'll play freaking Wii games before going back to a forced raid-centric, tab-target WoW-a-like.

    @MarzAttakz

It may not be just AT&T's stuff. I notice a bit of packet loss periodically through Cogent's nodes well myself. It isn't likely to be everything though, as there are plenty of people who claim consistent 50-80ms latency at all times with zero problems. Yet here we are with godawful lag spikes and unplayable conditions quite regularly. It seems to me that it's Zenimax's job to at least track down the specifics of the problem(s) and at the very least get us some info.

My path, for example, responds 20-50ms for each hop at most all the time until the very last one that everyone goes through before hitting the ESO servers proper (12.122.100.77 -- gar24.dlstx.ip.att.net). This particular hop "pings" randomly from about 45ms up to 800ms or so which fluctuates wildly every second. Given that literally every player runs through that node at least, that seems like part of Zenimax's hosting to me. I'm no network engineer, but that wild fluctuation seems like a pretty darn likely candidate for the cause of most of the problems. What do you think @QuebraRegra?

Agreed, I'm desperately trying to find a solution to make the game enjoyable. I haven't run WinMTR yet but think I should, I can't shake the sneaking suspicion that they're simply too cheap to sort their servers out.
