Got scammed for 180K

First of all, I want to say that I'm not on tilt. 180K is a big number, but I've got almost 3M gold, so I will live. And yes, I reported the S.O.B. to ZOS, and hope he gets banned, but don't expect my gold back (though it would be nice, ZOS, if you're listening). I just want to tell my story so that people know not to get ripped off in the same way.

Psijic Ambrosia has been in unusually high demand ever since the recent double XP events, and now still with everyone leveling their Wardens. So, like some other master provisioners, I am in the market for Perfect Roe. Someone offered some for sale in chat. I whispered him and found out that he had 19 of them. That should have been my first red flag, since who sits on that number of Perfect Roe, but I was too eager for a big score. Anyway, we agreed on a price, and before I could arrange to meet him to trade, he COD'ed them to me. Second red flag ignored. When the mail arrived, I saw that the icon was a little funky, but accepted it anyway. Strike three. 19 Ebonthread for 180K.

I wouldn't mention it here except that this happened on Friday. And since then, several times this weekend, when I tried to buy more Perfect Roe in chat, the seller went AFK after we agreed to a price for an unusually large quality (typically 10 or 13) and I said "OK, let's meet to trade." This is either the same *** using multiple gamer tags trying to rip off more people, or a group of people who have gotten into the action. But I've never seen the number of con artists in chat that I did this weekend.

So -- Buyer beware. Be very careful accepting COD mails, and consider insisting upon a F2F trade for large purchases.

Edit 1: I'm on XBOX1. Mouseover is not an option. But thanks to the people who pointed out that pressing the right joystick down will display text. I'm looking forward to trying this when I get online later this evening.

Edit 2: Wow. I'm surprised that the amount of hate my post has generated. Why you all think that the best response to my post is to kick a guy while he's down is beyond me. I was just trying to be helpful.

COD is actually considered safer, because shenanigans can be pulled with the trade window.

Mostly. And it would be safer still if they included some identifying text along with the icon in the mail. As is, for some items such as master writs, tempers and perfect roe, as well as armor and weapons, it's not easy enough to be sure you're getting what you're paying for. For these cases, I think that the trade window is a better bet. But you can get scammed both ways.

You can check items before you pay from a C.O.D right?

Only by visual inspection of the icon, so far as I know, at least on XBOX. The ebonthread icon is annoyingly similar to the pefect roe icon.

*confused* why not mouseover the item before accepting? It does provide the description I think.
...or wait are you on console? I'm not sure how it works on console. Given this info is readily available on pc I'd wager there ought to be some way on console too, am I wrong there?

I think it shows what they are if you scroll over them. Really hard to get tricked. And perfect roe has gold icon.

They also try to pull with same trick with alloys. Gold alloys share a very similar visual with another unrefined metal (forgot which one), but as long as there are people who don't check what they're actually getting, these people will keep doing it.

No clue about consoles but on the PC, you can click on each icon and get a text description of the item.

Always good practice to do that before accepting CODs ...

Actually, (if I remember right) there is an option in the CoD window to view the attachments before accepting them, but people, and myself included are in just too much of a rush to thoroughly go over everything.

Happened to me with Hissmir when during holiday one scammer was pushing drink instead of recipe. I noticed it fast because I already seen Hissmir recipe before. But he told me there are plenty of people paying well for it without even knowing the difference between drink and recipe icon.

Trade windows can be swapped out buy other player and accepted. So dont ever confirm first because if theyre fast enough your beat.

Cod is safest by the way. You can click in right stick or whatever it tells you at the bottom of the screen qhat button to preas and view the actual item by name and icon.

How you have 3 mil and didnt know to check the cod properly for a trade of that cost sounds like a lesson to me.

Just an aside I have 35 perfect roe in my craft bag and I'm keeping all of them.

Some of us *do* sit on that stuff.

Sorry you got ripped off though.

Also, I'm on PS4 and you can check what the attachment is by clicking R3 or L3 (can't remember which offhand). Likely same for Xbox.

I cannot explain this. My crappy solution has been to sit with my iPad on my lap and to look up the icon on UESP so that I can compare it to what I see on my TV monitor. Definitely a valuable lesson for me. Worth 180K? I don't know about that. But definitely valuable.

Yes. Without a doubt, I am definitely blaming the scammer. I was too easily fooled; shame on me for that. But he was the offender and I was the (all too easy) victim. I'm sure that ZOS will see it my way as well. He will be the one who is banned, not me.

hahah. He won't get banned. Same thing with Runescape back in the day. Bunch of scammers and hardly anyone gets banned. Most they'll do is revamp the trade system which I doubt as the system in place is already fairly solid.

Nope. I'm not asking for anything. Just passing along my experience so that others, perhaps even more gullible than I was, stand a better chance of not getting burned. I learned the hard way. I don't see why is should necessarily be that hard for the next guy. Your assumption that my motivation is anything other than what I stated it to be is disheartening. 0/10.

Why is nobody bringing up the point that OP voluntarily paid 180k for 19 raw ebonthread and nobody forced him to do it.

Trusting a random stranger on the internet was probably your first mistake. Blame goes to OP IMO. I'd never trust a random stranger on the internet
