Best race for a warden and why?

Argonian because it's the best sustain for a tanky off heals/DPS for PvP heavy armor and then likely orc for stamwarden in PvP.

why are people saying high elf? warden only has 1 ice damage skill. fire damage will still do most of your damage % so go with dark elf.

Actually, the Warden has 3 Ice damage skills.
    1. Impaling Shards
    2. The Stab morph of Crystallized Shield
    3. Sleet Storm

If you add up the extra damage from Frost plus the slighter larger Magicka pool and consider that High Elf is 4% extra fire damage vs Dark Elf 7%, the difference is not worth choosing a race for.

Just play the race you enjoy most. Myself, I do not enjoy playing a Dark Elf.

Edit - also the Warden passive, Piercing Cold, adds another 6% to cold damage.
We may also find the 9% Magicka Recovery the HE has to be more valuable in Morrowind and may actually have some effect on dps.
Impaling shards is the only one that you'd make use of being a damage dealer. Sleet storm is considerably weaker than Elemental Rage, you'd only slot it for the max magicka and use your Elemental Storm on your back bar.

The question was asking for the best race, and majority of your damage is going to be coming from Elemental Rage or even Meteor.

Lets not forget that fire damage skills also get buffed by Dragonknights Engulfing Flames ability by 10%. And also you'd probably be better off using Force Pulse on Warden DD. Dunmer also gets a 2% buff to Frost Damage, which is a 2% difference than the High Elf but you gain a lot more Fire Damage. Lets not forget the change to Light Attacks dealing a ton more damage, you wouldn't be using a frost staff for your Light Attacks.

It's a marginal difference but for the 'best' it would be Dunmer, well I think it's around a 2-4% difference in damage

As for resources in Morrowind with the recent change to heavy attacks, sustaining in the future will come close to what it is on Live however it's more so based on the player instead of having stuff handed to you from others around you. As in Heavy Attacks.

I think here are some choices in PvP:

    Magicka:

Support: Breton (3% reduction too useful next patch)
Damage: Altmer (4% extra elemental dmg)
Tank: Argonian (4k tri-pots on alchemy use)
Best if you don't know what to choose: Breton

    Stamina:

Damage: Khajiit (8% weapon crit + 10% stam recovery + sneak damage buff)
Sustained Damage: Wood Elf (21% stamina recovery + sneak damage buff)
Tank: Wood Elf (Better sustain next patch than Redguard, sadly), possibly Argonian
Best if you don't know what to choose: Wood Elf

if you want a DD stam-Warden and you intend to use Warden-specific damage skills, e.g. shalk, cliff racer as opposed to DW/2H, then these skills are classed as range (even if you are standing nose-to-nose) and you will not proc the Redguard passive for stam return, making a Redguard redundant.... go with a Bosmer for the improved sustain or Imperial for the higher health and stamina pool

as for DD mag-Warden then Dunmer

tank you could go with Argonian for the sustain from passives, Imperial even Orc and Nord are also good choices as tanks will be health-builds

    healer Warden Argonian, High-Elf, Breton

so a nice range available so it could add some variety

I don't think pve dps roles allow too much variance outside Altmer/Dunmer for mag and Redgaurd/Khajit for stam.

That said, I think Argonians are actually interesting. They still have a passive that restores based on your max pools. 12% h/m/s per potion is absolutely decent.
Assume a mag DD with 40k magicka (this is more than what we'll see in pratice but in practice you'll be very happy to also get stam+health). 12% is 4.8k magicka every 45sec (potion cooldown). This is 106.6 magicka per second and thus equivalent to 212 magicka reg.
Now let's look at altmers 9% magicka reg passive. You would need a whopping 2355 reg BEFORE the passive (so >> 3k char-sheet reg) for the same amount. As such, I would say the Argonian passive is probably the second best reg passive in the game behind bosmer's stam reg and maybe the best for pvp.

On top of that you get 3% max magicka (not really much), poison/disease resist (meh, even in pvp stamina classes still deal so much more physical than psn/disease) 9% max life (very nice, especially since some warden skills scale with life), 5% healing input 5% healing output (pretty great) and, of course, a tail!

Imho going Argonian basically locks you out of trial dps roles (at least min/maxed) but is a decent choice as healer or tank for pve, good for all pvp magicka builds and even okay pvp stamina builds. If you're looking to play warden as new go-to twink for pvp groups that get bigger than, say 4, (to heal, use the snare ult to support eye of the noob and for the aoe major defile), I think Argonian is actually the top dog!

PS: But then there are still pending changes to be released today, so who knows what's really gonna happen

You've missed off quite a few passives there.

Why woodelf for a tank? I'm confused.

I missed passives because they weren't essential enough or weren't the main point of choosing that particular class. Stamina has a little more to it because some of the passives aren't as unique as magicka's.

That being said, Wood Elf simply has enough sustain next patch to be extremely useful as a Tank. Sustain is far too important because of the removal of "old" Warlord and Redguard being nerfed. You need that sustain to actually tank, especially with vigor changes, block cost interval changes, Constiution nerfs, etc. That's why wood elf is there. Sorry for not explaining.

    .

I was only addressing the number of Ice skills for the Warden, as the stated number was incorrect. I was not saying you would actually use them.

But the assessment of these skills may be premature. If you watched the last ESO livestream, one of the last dev comments was that Magicka Warden's damage was too low and they would be making adjustments in early access.

When someone asks what is the "best race", they usually have other factors in mind in addition to just a numeric calculations. The answer was appropriate.

Perhaps they think they'll use lightning staffs.

Perhaps they like the Altmer magicka regen.

Perhaps they like Altmers' greater max magicka.

I'm really debating on what to make my Warden; I currently am planning on making a Warden and a DK soonish. I know I want one of them to be a Dunmer (because along with Orcs they're my favourite and for some reason I don't have a Dunmer character atm) and the other probably a Argonian. But I dunno which way around. >.<

Any lore perspectives on this incredibly important decision? :P

Magicka DKs really can have a huge fraction of their damage be flame damage. The only reason I fear I have been wrong to make my DK a Dark Elf is that DKs have a large buff to heavy attack damage and lightning staff heavy attacks do great AoE (nerfed in Morrowind, however).

Back to the original topic of this thread:

The only way I'll seriously play a stamina character is if using bow as the primary weapon ever turns out to be viable. So the Redguard melee-oriented passive is less than thrilling to me.

On the other hand, while I love the Bosmer stealth-oriented passive on my nightblade thief, I don't see how it will be a big help in PvE DPS, especially now that they've made it harder to initiate a fight with a bow heavy attack from stealth.
