I don't think its unreasonable for me to ask this question, since the card has pretty much only been used for this since the game came out. I have other cards for every thing else.

Why would you think to use a public forum for a private matter though? That's the part that doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, I mean, nobody else would want to know that their credit cards may have been compromised. And I'm sure they protect game passwords more than the heavily regulated credit card data they collect...

When Rift was hacked, not only did Rift employees post a couple times that there was no issue (as hundreds a day lost their accounts) and players needed to stop surfing bad websites and keep malware off their computers, but they also allowed players to abuse the posters raising the issue without pause.

Eventually, when the data was overwhelming and some IT experts even posted how it was happening to the forums, they came out an announced that they had a security flaw and they had known about it for a period of time that included while they were blaming the players and allowing other players to abuse them in the forums.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Well, in your case, that makes sense since Wells Fargo was busted for making fake accounts.

Your account was compromised by your very bank.

I wouldn't do business with Wells Fargo under any circumstances for pulling this crap.

    You shouldn't either.

    Hi,

I just received notice from my credit card company that one of my cards is being issued a new number and a new card is being sent to me in a few days due to my card being used at a business that has recently been compromised.

The card in question only has a 500 dollar limit on it and was originally set up back in 2009. This card has NOT been used to purchase anything except ESO Sub and a few crowns since August of 2014 to present.

The last time this happened to me with this card it was revealed that Sony PSN was hacked back in 2011. I was issued a new card, but never used it on PSN again.

I'm not saying it's not possible it come from something else back in the past but I find it strange. My card company won't tell me where the breach originated citing laws and policy won't let them.

So I ask ZOS, were you recently hacked? If so, what are your reccimendef course of action? If you haven't been hacked, great! I'm happy. Just trying to find some answers that's all. I take card payment security seriously.

    Thank you for your time

Their third party processor who handles the merchant account could have been compromised. That happens a lot.

I didn't know that that could happen! My main bank is citibank student account. but I buy everything online with paypal now a days unless it does not have that option which I am a little hesitant to buy from.

It also might not have been ZOS directly. It could have been a clearing house on either side, or even the company ZOS uses for payments. Surprisingly there are a lot more entities involved behind the scenes with transactions than just the consumer, the merchant, and the banks.

I would suggest opening more then one banking account. I have 3 primary personal accounts. One is used to store my money and has no checks, cards, online, automatic debits, etc. The second is used for paypal and trusted merchants online. The third account I use for point of sell transactions, basically it's the debit card I carry and the card I use for untrusted online merchants.

The way I set things up with my bank the accounts are all isolated. So if say the third gets compromised money never leaves other accounts if that one reaches zero. And I only keep small sums of money into the second and third ones so if something does happen any loss is minimal. For large purchases I transfer the money to accounts two or three and spend it immediately. My bank is really fast with account to account transfers on accounts I own it only takes a few minutes to clear.

I think they have to give notice if their data is compromised and warn customers if that actually happened . I haven't had any issues .

I have a background working in the fraud department for a local bank, and I will say that even the bank doesn't always get all the information in case of a breach. In my experience, the credit card companies often don't reveal the suspected merchant, and will just give a list of possible compromised cards. That said, sometimes it's not just specific merchants, but can be a time frame with increased fraudulent activity. Depending on how conservative your bank is, they are likely just being proactive to prevent anything from happening. It's unlikely it's linked directly to ZOS, and more likely to be a time frame with increased fraudulent activity. Again, this is just my experience, but we would often close cards that didn't have the exact merchant but could still possibly be compromised. It's a "better safe than sorry" situation.

Yes, I called my card company, and they wouldn't tell me anything about who the suspected was.

I only asked here because this is my most recent purchase dating back well over 2 years. I don't use this card for anything else. I only set up originally for PSN, and later made it my ESO/Steam card. I already asked Steam and they told me they haven't been.

I don't think its unreasonable to ask. Its not like this happens to me all the time.

It's definitely not unreasonable to ask. Just saying even your bank may not have the answers you are looking for. In many cases, it's a "suspected" breach, and then they don't have to/can't/won't reveal the merchant information, in case of libel situations and impact to that business.

Aye I follow. Well I can live with that answer I guess. We just may never know who or what.

Thanks for the very detailed response

ZOS feel free to close this thread or lock it.

Yeah and sometimes gaming charges create a red flag for some banks. I know mine called me regarding some charges that came from a different game I played around 2008. Probably with all the high profile instances that have occurred as of late i.e. Target, PF Changs and so on, some banks urge on the side of caution and close down the account.

Why would Zenimax, Steam or anyone else in the ESO purchasing chain use a third party processor?

Research on merchant accounts are and why they are used then you will understand. Payment processors are often targets because some have weak security. I know this may sound like something out of a movie but people do get jobs at the processing centers just to learn how things are ran so they can find weaknesses to exploit. Card fraud is a big business.

I asked the question because I know the answer.

A merchant typically uses a merchant bank (a.k.a., processor/acquirer) to clear its transactions through a payment network and the customer's issuer. The merchant bank, the network and the issuer are all paid a fee for this service. The merchant ends up paying about 1-2.5% of the transaction value. So, if the merchant sells a coat for $100 USD under a 1% fee structure, its going to get $99 deposited into its merchant account.

A third party processor let's merchants use its own merchant account and merchant bank for transaction processing. As the merchant, you are now paying the merchant bank, the issuer and the network, and also the third party processor for letting you use its account. If you use Square, you are going to pay 2.75% or 3.5% depending on how the transaction was made, and if you use PayPal, typically 2.9%. As a result, the average customer of a third party processor is an individual or very small business accepting payments by phone. Local to where I am right now, the solo hairdresser and magic shop use third party processors.

So, why would Zenimax or any of its distributors use Square's or Paypal's merchant bank instead of getting their own and making more money on every transaction?
