I could be wrong but I think your ping is partly dependent on how far away your pc is from the game's server location. The greater the distance, the greater the ping.

That's it, but MMO servers are a special case.

I live 3x closer to the ESO servers than the Overwatch servers, yet my ping in ESO is 3x higher.

Use port triggering, not port following:
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/141575/psa-please-dont-use-port-forwarding-for-eso-zos-shouldnt-be-telling-people-to-do-this/p1

Also, a fast router isn't going to increase the speed you get from your ISP.

Connected my PC to the modem via an Ethernet cable and never looked back. Wifi internet is so unreliable in comparison.

Turn off other devices using wifi .

Don't play via wifi... that is half your ping already.

How? Move closer to the ESO servers. Eastern USA if possible, if using NA servers. (Not really a practical option for most people, of course.)

I switched my Xbox to 5g and haven't had a single problem since. 80mbps down 45 up. 75 latency.

Issue with running on 2.4ghz is everything else runs on that band. Microwaves, tvs, refrigerators, ac thermostat, cell phones. Way too much interference.

On 5ghz, your the only thing running on it. You have to have a isp / router that supports it. Also hopefully soon there will be more ipv6 support.

I have Verizon fios. Their latest quantum modem has dual band 2.4ghz and 5ghz. It has ipv6 compatibility, but it's not in my area.

Things will get better for Oceanic traffic in the future. As it is there is a bottleneck to the US from Aus and NZ and our packets just have to wait their turn (which is why some ping 'boosters' don't do diddly). Pretty sure there is to be a new cable been laid across the great ditch to share the load, no Idea when.

is port forwarding the same as port triggering

Kind of. Triggering just allows those ports to pass on your network. Forwarding just allows those ports to access a certain IP on your network. Forwarding requires you to use Static IPs and is harder to set up. Triggering is easier and what most people do.

It is also not a magic panacea to Ping times, but it does remove one source of slow downs. I did notice my averages going from 100 or so to 70MS after I did port triggering. There are many other sources of slow downs and you have no control over those.

The other thing you an do is try a continuous ping to a website in the Texas area, in the CMD Window ping -t IP Address. Only let this run for about 100 pings or so. Once you stop it, you will get a percentage of passed packets. Anything more than a few percentage points, call your ISP.

As far as Ping times go, really, if your below 200, the game is going to be just fine for you in PvE, below 150, fine for PvP. Remember, a 100 MS Ping is 1/10th a second, that's an eye blink. When you get up over 300, then you need to really start worrying, and even then, when I see that high a ping response, it settles down in a moment or two.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
