I do high-elf, particularly on the damage side, but I also like Breton for the light armor and magicka resist.

This is not nearly as clear cut as it was back when the thread was started in 2017. The two main differences now are sustain and new skills.

Sustain has been tough since Morrowind (Summer 2017) so both the 9% Magicka regen from Altmer and the 3% cost reduction from Breton are valuable. However, most DPS builds do not build much into Magicka Regen, which means that the Altmer passive typically applies to the base value of 514 and results in only 23 Magicka per second. If you use Witchmother’s Brew or Clockwork Citrus then the Altmer passive increases to 37 Magicka per second. The Breton passive is often much better, since the average skill cost is around 3000, this passive is worth about 90 Magicka per second (with use of one skill per second, full light attack rotation).

Altmer gets 4% increased fire, shock, and frost damage, which is why they have always been the obvious choice for DPS. However, every time we get a CP increase this bonus becomes a little less valuable, since it is additive with all other % damage increases. Effectively, this “4%” is more like 2.8% to those elemental skills for most builds. Now consider that not all damage falls into those categories, especially with the new Psijic spammable, elemental weapon, which deals magic damage. Together with Crystal Frags, Haunting Curse, and Absorb Magic enchants, at least 25% of your damage is unaffected by the Altmer elemental damage passive, bringing it down to effectively 2% DPS.

Bretons get 3960 spell resistance, which works out to be around 8-10% mitigation against most of the most dangerous attacks in trials. This means that you can build a trial-ready Breton with less health than an Altmer. With the current trend of using regen foods, this means that a Breton can go full damage while an Altmer may need to pick up a few points of health somewhere else (usually taking then from Max Magicka).

In the end the two races are very similar for DPS, they just get there slightly differently. I would say Altmer is better for Force Pulse builds, pet builds and heavy attacks builds, while Breton is best at full light attack rotations using Elemental Weapon, or for content where a little more defense is valuable.

Bosmer here. Though the race choice for me is pure RP, this one is rather a soloist (decent dps, solid heals, quite tanky) and does great for what I want.

Besides, Bosmer are small targets and hard to hit in combat. ;)

I Prefer Breton they are far less buffoonish and better looking than high elves. Plus they have great magicka reserves.

If i ever made another it'd be dark elven.

I hate HEs, I'm always using Saxs, but for anyone else I would recommend HEs, because they have just crazy damage output and Saxes are just underpowered mag race.
We are mature ppl and we must facing the truth. Only ZOS refusing this and even closed my last thread where I asked to buff Bretons a little...

Let's face it, if you're min-maxing to this level you're going to be a Vamp anyway so you might as well give up on it.

Depends on the player, role and content.

Arguably Breton would be better than altmer for mag tanking, healing and for pvp. I'm researching this at the moment, as I play a breton mag sorc, but am considering getting a race change for the extra couple of %dps. There was a really good discussion about this on reddit a few days ago.

Is this actually true for PvP? I've actually heard a lot of people say Breton is in fact better than Altmer because of slightly better sustain and resistance. Can someone confirm this? I only ask, because I was thinking about a race change from Altmer to Breton just because of this (slightly better performance at PvP).

Money is not a problem cause I saved some points from subscription, but I don't wanna change my race only to realize later that Bretons are actually worse than Altmer not only in PvE DPS but also PvP.

Breton is just as good in PVP as High Elf, no issues at all. In fact, if you take an identical player with identical build, skills and gear, and put him up against himself in a Breton vs High Elf sorcerer fight, Breton wins.

Bretons basically have a slight defense advantage vs any magicka opponents. Sustain is pretty much comparable, and High Elf's DPS passive is not that great in PVP (damage halved, CPs etc etc). it's only better in PVE.

Not to mention that most of your hard hitters won't be elemental damage, but rather basic magic damage (elemental bonus passive doesn't apply there).

No-one ever says High Elves are inferior at mag DPS. Bretons are constantly argued about.

    ZOS conclusion: races are balanced.

There is no sexy in High Elves. Only in Bretons.

Back to the OP. I think the answer lies in whether you want a pet or not.
In the first case, High Elf, no doubt. In the second you can pick a Breton without problems.

Breton . May be seems awkward. With breton sorcs you can solo vet dungeons and vet dlc dungeon bosses. 5K spell resistance will win in PVP anyday over 4 percent damage. You will restro staff on back bar.
    So breton best choice.
