Nirnhoned vs Sharpened

Which is better for DPS characters? I'm assuming Sharpened>Precise but it seems like Nirnhoned could be good with boost to weapon damage. If I'm running NMG do I really need more penetration?

Nirnhoned is more or less worthless as a trait now. Sharpened all the way. The only value nirn has is a research trait for the ability to craft 9 traits sets.

Some ganking setups can benefit from a nirn weapon (e.g. 2h ulti + shadowy disguise).
But in general you want to use sharpened and in the rare case that you manage to get close to 100% armour penetration you should use precise.

Wrong, in PvE DPS sharpened is king yes. Nirnhoned is not worthless though, its stronger in PvP vs shield stacking sorcs like myself, its also better on onslaught gank builds

What is 100% penetration and how can I see how close I am to that? I'm on Xbox don't know if the matters or not

100% penetration depends on your targets resistances. 100% penetration on someone with 20k resistances would be 20k penetration. It's not really feasible to pvp with any more than 18k penetration, so 100% pen will only be achieved on players with less than 18k resistances. If you're wearing 7 light with spinners and have a sharpened weapon you probably sit at around 15k spell pen. 18k pen would be achieved by putting around 60cp in spell erosion too. I don't know how physical pen stacks.

Thanks that makes sense. I mostly pve is there a way to find out dungeon boss resistance? Is there like an average amount I should go for?

There is a way to do it with the S&B ulti I think, but I've never tried. People have compiled lists on this forum though, have a quick search for "mob resistances". I want to say that most overland and dungeon mobs have no more than 18k resistances, but I have a feeling there are bosses with up to 25k resistances. vMA is a bit different; most of the mobs and bosses in there have lower resistances than overland or dungeon mobs and bosses. I think they start at 9k and go upto 18k. I think this is because it's a solo arena and players are only expected to have self buffs. In a group setting there are buffs/debuffs from group members that will add penetration to take you upto the "cap" (the "cap" being when your target is fully penetrated). So you don't need to be stacking pen above all else for group play. For a group setting you probs just need a sharpened weapon, but for solo stuff you might need spinners/spriggans too. CP is a very expensive way to gain penetration, so only go there for pvp if you want to be effective against players with more than 20k resistances.

Overland mobs have 9100 spell and weapon resist.

All bosses and dungeon mobs have 18200. No feelings needed. This is hard data.

vMA is different as you stated.

It is easy to check, use the two-hander ulti and see how much armor you get.

This has been confirmed many times with math, that I could link, besides the two-hander ulti.
