Bind an enemy with chaotic magic, dealing 11040 Magic Damage over 14.4 seconds and healing you for 1934 Health and an additional 1934 Health every 6 seconds.

While active, your Light and Heavy Attacks against the enemy have a 15% chance to heal you for 115% of the damage caused.

Grants you Major Sorcery, increasing your Spell Damage by 20% for 20 seconds.

I do, and that's one reason why I just reconfigured my weapon bars to eliminate Power Surge in favor of Degeneration, making sure that Degeneration is slotted before my major AoE.

PvP magDKs use Structured Entropy. Having it on bar together with Coagulating blood grants you extra healing to coag because of the 8% hp difference. It also gives you major sorcery so you can use immovability pots instead and on top of that a small hot + dot. On top of all, it procs empower for big Ferocious leaps.

Never use structured entropy because you can get in situations where you get hit with mages wrath on the entropy bar and when you swap to your other bar your health drops below execute range and you die to the proc.

It's the only way to get the Major Sorcery buff if you're a Templar and don't run spell power pots (I prefer unstoppable for PvP). Plus having it on the front bar and not the back means I can proc Transmutation at will simply by casting a HoT and then flipping to the bar with higher health. A 22% reduction on Crit damage with easy to maintain 100% uptime is very nice for survivability.

When it says " heal you for 115% of the damage caused." does it mean by damage caused from light/heavy attacks? Or the damage caused by the little DOT?

Thinking about surge, does the heal from surge get the PvP healing reduction?

Someone brought up a good point to where I am not sure going surge over entropy is the way to go for my new mag sorc. Thought the healing was better on surge but entropy does give that empower and can proc frags for cheap, no?

Entropy gives you 8% additional health and mages wrath procs at 20% so youd have to already be pretty low on health for the bar swap to be a problem. Totally a good point though.

No, but the damage/heals are pretty insignificant, especially taking into account Battle Spirit in PvP.

This sounds like they copied this skill and pasted it to nerf Siphoning Attacks. :/

I use the one that gives more health on one bar that has less shadow skills (passives buffs health), and Magelight on the other bar so it's only a ~1k difference when I swap, but I've been thinking of changing it.

Lol! You're right, I'm conflating it with the Major Sorcery buff. My bad.

And mixed in Radiant, which does give Empower, just to be extra confusing. Go big!

That's actually pretty nifty.. not only do you buff yourself but damage the enemy while healing yourself... if fact these numbers make me think... is critical surge... the best choice? In fact this heal is higher than my dark deal tooltip reading and I am a healer....

Playing a Sorc, so for me it's Power Surge, but yeah, that's where I ended up.

I see Power Surge used a lot in builds online, but when I laid out all the spells side by side and compared effects, it seems to me that Degeneration is just a more effective spell.

Power Surge procs a heal when a critical strike is done. Probably, as a dps sorc, that's going to happen on the regular. But Degeneration gives an immediate health bump when it's cast, and then a HoT while it does damage. The immediate health rec'd is not a lot, but I can control it by casting the spell, so if I get very low, I can re-cast Degeneration as a baby heal spell and not be completely reliant on the healer. (Really great if I'm soloing.)

It only lasts half as long as Power Surge, but for my sorc, the casting cost is a third of what it takes to put up Power Surge, so I can cast it twice as often and still save mana.

The other differences between them concern the passives:

Power Surge is a Storm Calling spell.
-There's a passive that gives a 2% increase in spell damage for each Sorc spell slotted. So not using this one means giving up a 2% bonus.

Degeneration is a Mage's Guild spell.
-There's a passive that gives a 2% increase in Max Magicka & Mag Recovery for each MG spell slotted.
-There's a Mage's Guild passive that gives the caster Empower after casting a MG spell, which gives a 20% spell damage bonus to the next attack spell.
-Also: Degen is a DoT - I am running the Skoria set, so every DoT in play is another chance for a flaming meteor to crash down on the mobs, yay. This would probably be enough to swing me, even w/o the Empower bonus.

I've been keeping Degeneration on my front bar, and alternating casting it on different targets in between casting Liquid Lightning and Mage's Fury, so I keep getting that Empower bonus on every attack. I still have a ton of tweaking to do w/my build overall, but I think this rotation is effective. But b/c I haven't seen other ppl doing this, I decided to do some research and make sure I wasn't misunderstanding something. I haven't seen anything here that convinces me I'm wrong, but if any of you see a flaw in my logic, please let me know. :) There's a lot about the math side of the game I don't grok yet.
