Some questions about crown crates and gems

So I'm no fan of crown crates but there's something in this wild hunt season that I really, really want. And as it so happens, it costs "only" 16 gems so I thought maybe I'd get a few crates. MAYBE.
But I need some basic info from you guys.

- Can we return any crate item and convert it to gems, or is it only the items that we already have in our collection ? (for instance, I don't have the puppy, and I don't want it, if I get it in the crate, will I be able to return it, or will it automatically go into my collections ? )
- What's the return rate of those items ? Half their nominal gem cost ? More ? Less ?

Thanks in advance for your insight. I need to find out how many crates I'd need, in the worst case scenario, to get 16 crown gems.

You can't choose what you turn into gems. Only consumables (scrolls, potions, riding lessons etc.) can be turned into gems directly.
If you don't own a collectable, costume, pet or mount then it unlocks for you and only turns to gems (automatically) if you already have it in your collections.

The gems given by items can be seen on this page: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Crown_Crates under each list of items, whilst this is for the Storm Crates the values of gem returns remains the same.

Thank you very much @Turelus , that's everything I needed to know.

So worse case scenario I'll need 4 crates to get 16 gems. I think I'll go ahead and do that. 1500 crowns is a price I'd be ready to pay straight for that item I want, so I guess it's fine. Any flaw in my reasoning ? Well I might get plenty of APEX stuff and costumes I don't really want and end up with no gems... well that would really be reversed good luck ! :D

Technically you do, you could end up getting lucky (which in your case would be a bad thing) and get multiple good rewards such as costumes/pets which you don't own and then end up with less items to turn into gems.

However generally you will get more useless consumables than anything else.

Also whilst you're opening them please help out Enodoc and his tracking rates of drops in crates here: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/comment/3862462

Yep I'll fill in Enodoc's form while I'm at it.

One more question : the banekin is the same as the one we got from Molag Bal ? Because I already have this one and I heard it drops a lot in those crates so that'd be more gems for me then.

The Banekin is entirely different as Molag Bal drops a Scamp which there was a store version of but it was different in colour to the one Molag Bal dropped.

If you already have an item from the crates unlocked on your account it will be greyed out in the gems purchase section (much like other single store purchased items ).

Well, you were right, there's simply too much stuff I didn't have, so I needed 8 crates instead of four. (ZOS wins !)
But on top of the item that I was aiming for, I got 5 others that I really enjoy (including antler hat yeahhhh ! <3 ) and only two that I don't like and won't use.

So in the end it's 3K crowns well spent in my view... but for having now exprienced the process, I understand why people get "lost"...

    Thanks again for your help.

No problem and glad you got the items you were after.

I was lucky to get the mount from the last set in my first batch (and a Horse which I wanted) but I really dislike the system for people who just want one of those mounts and they can't choose when one when they get an apex card.
