What to do in a house?

Ok, I get that we can craft and have dps dummies, stations for sets. But what the heck are we gonna do in housing once the novelty wears off? My PvP guildies don't see themselves hanging out in a house doing nothing or even dueling.

I like collecting things and my wife enjoys decorating. I have fun creating furniture and putting it right inside the front door of the house for my wife to find when she logs in. I'll come "home" later to see where she's put it (she has decorator status and I let her arrange to her heart's content). She gets a kick out of organizing the place and is endlessly entertained. I eventually made the courtyard my personal project, and I have enjoyed watching it grow from a cobblestoned walkway into a walled garden wonderland, so I can relate to her (and other's) joy over this patch. For someone who isn't into having a "home away from home," Homestead may not make sense to you. For the rest of us it just clicks.

This is why I don't mind that furniture plans are obtained by RNG and that it's going to take a long time to get my house decorated. I don't know what I'd do with a fully decorated house except occasionally drop in to craft or use it as a wayshrine.

I'm getting more fun from unexpectedly finding plans for furniture I want, or furniture I'd never considered but like the look of once I preview it and gradually building up to crafting it all. The other night I was digging through a pile of sacks outside the besieged farm in Rivenspire and suddenly came across a plan for a khajiit claw banner, one of the items I'd decided I'd buy from the crown store if I couldn't find it. So that was a really nice surprise.

Of course I'd prefer housing to have more purpose so I'm not only going back there to drop off furniture.

My house is pure convenience: bought Snugpod, just a few seconds away from the AD writ drop off location, put my assistants inside along with an alchemy and an enchanting station, so now I can avoid running up and down the Elden Root tree every time I decide to do Master Writs. On the rest of the space I'm dumping, warehouse-style, whatever decorating junk drops during questing and exploring.

List of stuff you can do in house.
    • decorate it
    • sit on chairs
    • use test dummies
    • use crafting stations
    • pretend any decorations beside test dummies were worth your time and effort.
List of stuff you can't do in house.
    • Invite lot of ppl at once
    • display all your pets, assistants and mounts at once
    • have vendor to fix your gear
    • access guild bank or guild store
    • launder stolen goods, since your fence is crippled, as other assistants are
    • sort out your gear, since no stash space was introduced
    • open cabintets, lay down on bed, harvest plants
    • summon assistants as you please
    • put enough stuff, even if an ESO+ subscriber

Even if Zos does not introduce stash for their own out of common sense reasons, they must make a system that helps us sort out all gear we have on all out chars without having to log on each of them. That would greatly improve the value of housing and I would be buying some myself. If they want to spice it up a bit, houses could be "registered" to only a certain numper of chars you got, so for example common Inn room could host just 2 chars. That way, to be able to acess all your inventories at once, you still would need to purchase at least large house.

Simple solution with housing and inventory increase would be like this - each house you have increase each of your chars inventory by a certain number of slots. That would make ppl wanna buy houses. For example, just a plain Inn room could provide +2-3 slots, small one would be +3-5 slots, medium something like 5-10, large 10-15 and huge manors 20 slots. I know that would be enough for me to jump in housing train.

Things that MUST be introduced at some point are upgrades for our assistants. If we are forced to put them inside and tie them to a spot, we must be able to use guild bank, guild vendor, proper fence and merchant that can actually fix your gear. Or give us way to craft repair gear stations or something. That would suffice.

I got one of the cheapest ones and put a test dummy in it. That is the only use I have for it and will have for it. I got the house in Malabal Tor next to the dolmen only because it has a small court yard so I don't even need to go in the house. They're ultimately useless to a lot of people. If they introduced storage it would be the only thing I'd likely add.

So far, the only people who can use housing for events are duellers & roleplayers. But even that is not optimal, because there is a limit to how many players can be in a house at once.

I intended to wait with housing, till I could afford to have all set crafting stations located in a big house ...I just recently heard that there are limits to what and how much you can have in a house, so I don't now if it is worth it anymore :/

I have a few guildies who wanted me to view their homes, and one of them does that on a daily base - but it's empty, nothing special and nothing to do there. I go there, look ...get to feel awkward and port out.

I consider this "update" as useless and inventory clutter hell.

Housing is primarily a vehicle for the decoration system. You're meant to spend months building up the furnishings to get your house just right for whatever you want out of it... whether that's building a roleplay tavern, making mazes and jumping puzzles for your friends to try, or building up a guild house. It's all about the long-term goals, which will occupy anyone whose creativity is sparked by the furnishing system the same way gaining achievements, endgame gear, Emperor, and leaderboards are longterm goals for other players.

This question keeps coming up, so here's a post I wrote yesterday on this:
There are a couple small benefits and perks to having a house: the free teleports to any of your houses are nice, and with master writs you can get a DPS testing skeleton and crafting stations put in your home.

But overall? It's basically a little playground you can decorate to your taste, and whatever you get out of it is whatever you put into it, creatively speaking. Some people create mini-games like mazes and jumping puzzles, while other people roleplay taverns, inns, and, yes, brothels. Meanwhile, other people are decorating their houses to certain themes, like Dark Brotherhood sanctuaries, witch's caves, and hunter's cabins. You get out of it what you want out of it. I've likened it to Minecraft before, because it's pretty much the same sort of mindset: you have your own little world and some tools to build it up to your taste... it's more limited than Minecraft, but that's made up by the richer lore and the rest of the game surrounding it.

Personally, I love having one house for each of my characters, and enjoy the challenge of finding the perfect decorations for each of their houses to reflect their stories and personalities. It's immensely satisfying to place items in a way that suggests there are stories attached to them... to know that the pile of fish in the kitchen, the wine bottle thrown on the workshop floor, and the dagger just peeking out from under the pillow all say something subtle but important about the character who lives there. That's what housing does for me.

If that's not your thing? No worries. Get the free inn rooms (and I also recommend the cheap apartments) for the free teleports. Then, sell any recipes you find on the guild traders and never worry about it again. There's nothing wrong with deciding it's not for you. You play how you most enjoy. The important thing is that you're having fun playing the game. :)

    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

Quoted from another thread on my take of housing usefulness and what to do with... etc (intentionally leaving out brothels)

its possible to run duels in houses.
houses are instanced and you have control over entry.

So, if one is interested in dueling without interruption - like say running a dueling tourney that one can stream without having really annoying interlopers running into the duel and causing interruption after interruption to your broadcast - a house works very well for that. that is a capability the house can provide that cannot be gained elsewhere.

if one want to do so, one can create crafting stations for PVP zone sets and DLC sets and harder to get to sets and place them in your home and invite others (perhaps your guild mates) to use them without going to the PVP zone or owning the DLC. . that's a capability not otherwise available. one could even "rent" the home for such uses for gold if one wanted.

there are lots of other "functions" or more properly "capabilities" that folks can find "uses for" in their housing - in addition to whatever fun it brings them in its own right.

One can always ask "what does it do for me?" and get a very small picture of anything.
One can also always ask "what can i do with it or what can i get out of it?" and often get a much broader, richer more robust perspective.

The one's looking at housing now and asking the latter are gonna be the ones ahead of the curve.

In homestead housing is potential - potential fun, potential use, potential gains - and like all potential it requires creativity, time and effort to turn it from potential into reality and some will choose to do so and others won't.
