Flame resistance vs flame damage taken

I suppose my real question is: Will Dunmer's racial bonus to flame resist (2079) counter-balance vampire's 25% flame damage taken?
... but I'm also interested in the dirty details of the formula if anyone knows.

No. You will always take 25% more flame damage because of the way it is calculated. They take the flame damage you have mitigated already by the normal means and then add another 25% to it at the end.

The full way it is calculated is here- https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/279426/damage-mitigation-explanation-and-list-of-options-updated-for-a-third-time/p1

Thanks for the link... I think I've simplified the formula to only apply here.

    Assumptions
    Maximum resistance is 33,000.
From the referenced article, maximum resistance = 50% damage mitigation.

    Calculations
2079 resistance is 6.3% of the maximum resistance (2079/33,000).
The total incoming flame damage mitigation will be 3.15% of incoming damage (0.063 * 0.5).

    Example
    5,000 incoming damage
    157.5 mitigated damage: 5,000 * 0.0315
    4842.5 post-mitigated damage: 5,000-157.5

    With stage 4 vampire:
    6053 damage taken: 4842.5 * 1.25
197 damage less than without any flame resist: (5000*1.25)-6053
3.94% total savings with vampire: (197/5000)

If you are running as a stage 4 vampire, this effectively means your new multiplier is 21.06% (as opposed to 25%) increase in damage (5000*1.2106=6053).

No. It does work like that. If you are already at max resist, adding another 2k will do nothing. Because of the way it adds resists in the game, adding another 2k flame resist is like adding another 2k resists just for that.

it is explained in the link here-
And on the note of resistance. Elemental or Poison/Disease resistance is calculated as part of the Spell or Physical resistance each time it is used it simply adds to the base resistance anytime that element is used against you. However if you hit the Resistance cap then the elemental resists doesn't add anything more.

Yes, you are correct... I was not trying to imply that you could go over the cap. My calculations assume you were not already at the resistance cap (33,000).

No. It does work like that. If you are already at max resist, adding another 2k will do nothing.

Just a slight correction - the above is true, but only if you assume the enemy attacking you has no penetration. If he does, any excess resistance you have will serve to neutralize part of his penetration value.

Ex: if you have 3K resistance above the cap, and the enemy has 10K penetration, it's the same as if you were at cap, and he had 7K penetration.

(this is largely theoretical, as i do not think anyone runs around with resistance over the cap, save maybe when bloodspawn procs or such)
