Well, I said I would not buy a house. I swore I would not buy a house. I argued that they had no use whatsoever..... no storage and who needs a training dummy.
No I was absolutely not going to buy a house. Never.

    I bought Hundings Palatial Hall.

I did the same thing... I was adamant not to buy a house until lighting and other bugs were fixed, and until I had all of the furniture plans I thought I would need. I planned to buy Strident Springs with crowns once I was happier with the state of housing and once I was able to furnish it by crafting everything myself, and yet I bought Cliffshade a couple of days ago (a bit of an impulse purchase  ) not with crowns mind you, but still, I swore I wouldn't do it but I caved in...

It is beautiful.... Hundings Palatial has lovely lovely views. Especially now I built stairs to the roof. My banker lives there and my bank alts all live next to him....
I even finally levelled the last craft on my crafter, she is now Jack of all Trades so she has all the motifs and blueprints.... who knew I would need provisioning to make candles?
I say all motifs..... well she has all that I found and didn't sell.
So between this and pvp I have found plenty to occupy me till Morrowind. Which is great because I hit a big 'now what do I do' place a while ago.
I have to go back and do those vet dungeons tho.... need those busts.

I love my houses. I've spent hours decorating them and making them awesome for my friends to visit. I make gifts for my friends houses. I don't worry about the cost too much. Think about how much it costs to go to a movie and dinner. How long does that last? Three hours maybe? You'll enjoy this a lot longer. Although, I have been choosing houses that give me a free port somewhere you want to go, like Rawl'ka, my farming route, and other big shopping districts. I'm practical that way.

If you really want it (and you can afford it), get it. You're just torturing yourself not doing so.

When it comes to paying for your entertainment, this is about five trips to a movie theater (at least in my area), so... do you think it will be worth five trips to the movie theater worth of entertainment? Do you see yourself spending hours and hours messing around with your home to get it just the way you want it? Are you going to have fun with the decoration system? Do you have an "entertainment" budget that has a little cash in it? If all those are yes, then it's worth it. Go ahead and get it, and don't feel guilty. Other people may not see much "use" in housing but, personally, I'm having a blast with it. :)

If you can't afford it in real life or don't see yourself using the decorating system all that much, do as others have been saying and set yourself a challenge to buy it for in-game gold instead. This will keep you occupied for a little while, at least, and I find that deciding on an alternate course of action helps eliminate the temptation to do something dumb.

Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."

Don't do it for the following reasons:

    1. Don't do it because it's stupidly expensive. You could buy 2 or 3 NEW COMPLETE GAMES for the cost of this place, especially if you do it furnished.
    2. Don't do it because ZOS was lazy and put not one once of effort INTO THE HOUSE ITSELF. It is a tired copy/pasta of at least 3 other castles already in the game.
    3. Don't do it because you cannot access the upper balcony or the top of the curtain wall, depriving you of all the splendid views and useable space this place SHOULD have.
    4. Don't do it because the 24 player cap is ridiculous. ZOS should have very well known this cap is not in line with housing in virtually any other major game and SHOULD have known that players would be unhappy with this and should NOT have released housing until they figured out a solution to the "performance issues" that supposedly result at higher numbers of players.
    5. Don't do it because you cannot access at least TWO floors that the outside of the castle shows. In fact, the interior of the castle bears NO resemblance to the floorplan that should exist based upon the exterior view of the castle.
    6. Don't do it because there has not been a significant crown sale since this monstrosity came out. Half price is the only way this even BEGINS to make any sense.
    7. Don't do it because the only thought or care that was put into housing was put into developing a grind for the furniture that goes along with it. And doing it in such a way as to drive frustrated players into the cash shop.
    8. Don't do it because housing still has a host of bugs associated with it. DEMAND that these be fixed first.
    9. Don't do it because the outside grounds are the worst and most limited of all the houses with outdoor space. The trapdoor downstairs doesn't even take you to a sliver of beach but instead dumps your character into slaughterfish infested waters.
    10. Don't do it because by doing so all you will accomplish is to teach this company that they can put out a substandard product and charge you an outrageous price for it and you'll cave and let them get away with it. Wait for them to improve the value of this product or put out better houses in the future.

Give this guy a trophy, he guy hit it so hard on the head it's underground!

EDIT: I still don't quite get why people are willing to drop $100+ on a house and a title... I mean even the IN GAME amount is kinda ridiculous -_- one is like 3 mil I think? *shrugs* I guess?

If you want a manor, then I will be candid. It is a better deal with crowns. People can moan about the prices and I get it, but the reality is that even a furnished manor is 15K crowns. That's less that $120 US, less than $60 when on sale. I am not commenting on whether that is a fair price, but I will say that for most people, you can make the money faster than you can make the gold.

I was on the fence too, and I ended up buying a furnished manor (EP). I have absolutely no regrets. The furnished is nice because it gives you a lot of building blocks to play with. The Manor is nice because of the capacity. I would already be over capacity in even a large house.

Honestly, I am having way more fun with housing than I thought I would. It has become a guild hangout spot and it is probably as close to account wide achievements as we will ever get. Also, the gold sink is real even if you buy with crowns. I have sunk over a million into this thing.

What sort of a mansion has no view? Oh, and if you swim more than a few metres out from the water access (I forget its name, it's in the basement), you get eaten by slaughterfish.

I made a thread on Hundig's and it died horribly. My point was simply that I wanted to open my pocketbook for a huge house but only Hundig's was right for me. So, they should have ways for those that want a notable or notabe+, but like a different style, to get what they want through additions and not new houses at a higher tier. Specifically, the ability to buy a ship you can furnish out back like the one you see in the distance and a pirates cove since there is no real way to expand Hundigs'. Make that small island you can't quite reach the entrance to the cove. Hundig's was built by a pirate, so it fits.

I don't want a bigger house in the style of, say, Headman Bosek's palace. It, as well as Daggerfall Overlook and the Ebonheart colossus, are just too impersonal. They would make great guild houses.

Btw, if you want a view you can build one. I made stairs and large elevated patio for a better view in my jungle house. The problem there is that when you get the better view you realize the town is deserted. You don't see activity like you might see in the background while in your bag.

I entirely get the appeal of housing. I love the idea of becoming part of the game world, having a little piece to call my own. When I played Galaxes, I expect easily 80% of my gametime was spent driving around looking for the perfect spot for a house. I loved decorating it (and my POB ship).

I'm EXACTLY the type of player that would love housing in this game.

Unfortunately, they've made the entire prospect unrealistically expensive.

I cannot justify spending over $100 actual dollars to pay for a house in the game, especially when it lacks so much of what is best about a housing system (ie. visitors, being part of the world, where you can see people going by and doing things, etc.), and there's no way I will ever have enough gold in the game to be able to afford a house, since in three years of playing I've got about 6000 gold. Even if I'd saved every penny, I'd still have less than 50k (WELL less, I expect).

Add to that the fact I can find ACTUAL houses in the game setting I can use as a personal house, for no cost at all, and there's no reason to even bother with the housing system.

It comes down to expense, really. If it was less expensive, and I mean a LOT less expensive, then MAYBE I'd be willing to spend some money on it, but as usual, they have overpriced things so egregiously that there is no way I'm going to have it.

OP I am in the same boat, if I farm for it I might only get it in a couple of months simply because I am not big on farming & I would rather enjoy the game.

IF I bite the bullet because of impatience I would probably not regret it later, but I would feel like I could have spent the money getting an Atro bear... mmmm

So think about it like this:

What is preventing you from just getting it later with gold?

DO I NEED IT RIGHT NOW? Probably not

DO I WANT IT RIGHT NOW? Probably not (I just think I do)

    Ask yourself that question...

    5,500 crowns is $39.99 and 3,000 crowns is $24.99

In order to purchase the furnished version (which is not currently available for in-game gold) you would have to purchase 2 of the 5,500 crown packages and one of the 3,000 crown packages. That's about $105.00. For a pixel house. It's more than the game ever cost. And it leaves you with a whopping 200 crowns in change.

Now I know many of you will say, "Well I got the crowns via my sub....I got crowns on sale... etc." And in that case, good for you! But because these are the regular cost of crowns these are the actual cash values of these items.
