Theorycrafting Vs Copying

Do you enjoy trying to test and see what works for you. Or do you just follow the meta and go with what everyone's running thus copying.

I have my own style in doing things. I'm not a fan of cloaking with my stamblade, and I don't camp behind mines with my magsorc (way too boring).

i dont have time to theory craft . i can only play a few hours a week- so to farm 3 different sets to test them is out of the question. i have to take peoples word that Bsw, spinners, spirggans, fury, etc are good sets and get them. I've relied on the same 3 streamers, fengrush, kodi and alcast for almost a couple years now- and they've always been good. there are others. tried at least one of al the big streamers, - but i simply enjoying playing these guys' builds more- there also fun and functional. i like 2hand and bow stamina builds as well as dual wield and main on the four stam classes so thats prob why also.

but i always adjust to my own style, for example i always find a home for rearming trap on my back bar, and will typically choose a maelstrom weapon over any monster set or proc set ( i havent run one since trying viper for week) , preferring the flat damage increase from crit rush over any spikes off a monster set or proc set.

I would love to try out different sets and combinations but really, I can't even get one set within a reasonable amount of time. I don't want to spend days on gear that might be bad.

I do both. I do what I want... But within reason of ensuring it's still decent.

But then I wanted to do VMA so I copied for that character lol

There just aren't that many ways to build any of the 8 specs. Ever so often I think of a decent idea, or I see someone else whose had a decent idea and adapt it for myself. Example: Amberplasm instead of Lich on Magsorc. But rarely (in fact never) do I feel like these are original ideas. There's simply too few options, to the point where it's inevitable that someone has thought of either the idea I just had, or the idea that I just stole.

Right now I am running Fengrush Stamsorc meta build from October. I finally farmed the last piece of purple jewelry this week.

I run 5pc Black Rose, 2pc Tremorscale, 7pc Viper.

I have all purple viper jewelry. Sharpened Viper dagger with inpen viper shield on front bar and sharpened viper axe/dagger dw on back bar.

It's sickening. I despise it. I am using it to tank pve(dungeons, not trials) Honestly, I am thinking of running 5pc Levi instead of Black Rose for the crit but I'd rather respec back to magsorc if I am up to farming all the gear for it.

I normally trust my own builds, but not to say i wont check out numbers and things from other people. I remember at PC launch i told my guild i was going all light armor and people said i would be squishy as hell and die all the time. But my theory at the time was looking at all the abilities and 90% were all magicka base so i thought light armor would be much better for mitigation. Within a few weeks everybody was rolling that in my guild and of course the whole game. I know people probably did that on the PTS beta but i didnt know that at the time. So i used my own opinion even though everybody told me i was an idiot for using it. You have to trust you gut sometimes.

I copy some things that work well but also theorycraft to do some things my way..

I have fun testing and researching what are perhaps the most lazy ESO builds for PVP.

Limited to only gear that can be crafted or acquired cheaply from guild traders or PVP vendor, with zero grinding required. Obviously not the most powerful best in slot option, but they are viable and fun to play.

Ok... since some people want clarification of what "Theorycrafting" is this is for you.

Theorycrafting:

The science of optimizing a character for a specific goal, such as optimizing a character for the traditional roles of tank, healer or DPS Hybrid or all resourceful.

Minmaxing:

Minimizing the bad attributes of a character while maximizing the good ones.

Now you can call it the same thing, but it is similar to building around passives vs building for a idea/goal.

I've spent hundreds of thousand in gold, and farmed at least eight complete sets not counting the monster pieces.

I think that lands me in 'obsessive compulsive', not theory crafter.

I have some of the most fun putting together sets that might mesh well together.

Then there are the obvious times you should follow meta (i.e. want to get into a trial, need a vma build for score, etc.)

I have to admit i love theory crafting ... cost me heaps in gold ( over 500k) not counting gold mats but after a long trial and error i made a pretty damm good DPS

but there is always room to improve

There's maybe 4 or 5 sets per stam/magicka, tank that actually play well unless your running around with 20+ people. If your doing that, anything works.

I tend to work with what gear I have acquired & use it to work towards some better gear. I have 12 characters so the less played ones have some terrible gear.

The best way to theorycraft or whatever the condescending types want to dub it, is to save any good set pieces you get while farming for the ones you want. I have gotten so much purple jewelry and divines/inpen pieces from sets I don't want or enough monster helms to fill a room. If I had saved the good pieces to roll on a new alt I would be set lol.

As a trials healer, there isn't too much theory crafting.

SPC required, with Worms, TR, Mending, IA etc

I wear heavy kena helm because of a lack of master's resto staff.

Pretty sure 75% of players DONT theorycraft though


For example:
Stam sorc: hurricane, rush, dawnbreaker, executioner
magplar: heals, spam jabs, radiant destruction anywhere around 60% health
