i prefer for it to be in the back.
My reasoning is simple.
Humblemud and Velothi Reverie are examples of houses with a back yard only, no front yard.
That means you have the benefits of a yard but also have the front door goes directly out to the main world.
Houses with front yards, like the Ample Domicile, if you leave by the door, you have another door to then go through to get to the outside world.
Obviously, some have no yards or unusual layouts and make the point moot.
What are your thoughts?

ikr? I read the first part of the title, and I started snickering, because apparently I have the sense of humor of a 12-year-old.
Anyway, I like the ambiance of a front yard. Like, you enter your house and are greeted with a little pathway up to it, lined with flowers you planted, and with your trusty steed tucked into their stall in the stable. It just gives me that great "I'm home" feel.
That said, clearly, most superior is a yard that goes all the way around, like Hunding's and Forsaken Stronghold!

Hmmm... might have to check that out.
With the original suggestion my mind went to a "temporary" caravan stop... wagons of various sorts along with the tents. maybe something like the old way stops for stage coaches (the equivalent for ESO of course) made to provide services for wearfy travellers and supplies.
Add a small shrine and....
then we need to be able to "hire" workers and guards and "acolytes".
So much potential.

Yeah that would be really cool.
