In defense of completionists

tl;dr Everyone has their thing. Derailing valid completionist complaint threads by telling people over and over again how they must think and feel should be suspension worthy. ZoS, please leave completionist quit threads open as otherwise you won't receive valuable feedback on bugs, and the reason for the policy doesn't apply in this situation.

    Some irrelevant stuff...

Your threads aren't being closed because you're a completionist. Nobody cares that you're a completionist. Threads are being closed because they are filled with whining, and their only purpose is to sow dissention among other players. If you've already chosen to leave the game, don't write a "manifesto" about it. Nobody cares.

Regarding achievements being "too hard" or "too easy" to obtain, I've seen a lot of threads about it that have NOT been closed. If your thread complains about achievements, but ALSO complains about the game in general and announces that you're quitting the game, it should be closed. gtfo

Was not planning on posting in this thread again but he basically said what I said and more. All good.

So you also completely failed at reading comprehension? Or alternatively, only read the tl;dr and added in facts that aren't there?

I am not a completionist. I have never had a thread closed. I have not chosen to leave the game. This is not a manifesto in any sense of the term. The thread I am obliquely referring to did not also complain about anything unrelated.

This place is full of players bashing other players for their interests.

I have a problem with this statement.

I can't speak for others, only for myself. I'm not a "soft" person. I will never ever badmouth others for their "interest" or desires. However I will NOT hesitate to badmouth someone for the way in which they choose to voice their desires or interest.

I see about 10% of the forum community acting like adults, creating threads that point out game features they disagree with, and proposing solutions.

I see about 90% of the forum community whining like children, making sensationalist knee-jerk demands and ultimatums, while providing no real construstive solutions.

If you are defending the 90%, and claiming they are simply being attacked for their "interests", and for no other reason, then you sir are either a liar or a simpleton.

How do you define "childish whining"? It's through the lens of your own opinions and biases.

The OP of that completionist video made a perfectly valid, "adult" argument yet people who don't care about achievements thought it neccessary to tell him why the way he plays the game is wrong.

I don't see a video. I see the OP defending "I Quit" threads, and trying to argue some threads he personally considers important shouldn't be closed.

Good try with that Strawman deflection.

I think you have missed the point. They aren't throwing away what was previously most important to them, they are walking away from the game because they can't do what is most important to them.
I understand your distinction, thank you for correcting me. But you have also missed my point. That level of dysfunction transcends "completionism" and crosses the line into an obsessive disorder. You would serve your friend better by urging them to seek professional help rather than "fixing" the "problem" of a broken accomplishment. You could fix ESO, but your friend is going to continue to find other such issues in life and can't always deal with it by withdrawing

Caldwell's Gold is the second main story line. Let's assume for the sake of argument that, for example, a bug prevented me from entering overland Cyrodiil but I could go to IC and let's say the upcoming battlegrounds. While I could do those ancillary PvP activities, I would be unable to partcipate in that part of the game I enjoy the most. If it was not fixed in a couple of weeks I would quit the game.

Do I need professional help? If not, why is it different for people whose end game is achievement completion? .

I wasn't aware there was anything to defend. Aren't the vast majority of people completely content to let other folks play how they want? If you isolate the people who constantly try to derail threads with namecalling and other troll tactics, won't that make up an extreme minority of forum users? On the other hand, I guess they post so much that it might make up an undue portion of total posts. Anyway, it's great that you are among the right-minded folks who want to let people enjoy the game how they please, but I wouldn't worry too much about the detractors. There's always going to be small-minded folks oozing out of the cracks.

I don't have an issue with completionists - each to their own. The threads I have an issue with are where people, usually completionists, complain about how hard it is to get certain things that have no bearing on actual character performance or game play.

This came to a head with housing for me, people wanting the achievement for owning a manor house complaining about their high gold cost and saying ZOS has put an item 'necessary for game completion' out of reach. Lots of people have made 4 mil gold, which means that a Manor House is not out of reach. A Manor house does nothing to help your character in the game, therefore it is a 'want to have' item and not a 'must have' item.

If I want a no death vMSA run but don't want to improve my character, has ZOS put the achievement out of reach?
I don't think so, it is me who cannot be bothered doing what is necessary to achieve it. Besides, I do not need it to progress in the game.

I have never been a completionist. I have tried hard in the past with games but in the end the frustration always got to me. As I have aged (now in my 50's), I have developed short attention span, a shorter fuse, and a realization that these are only games and unlike real life, quitting is a perfectly acceptable option.

It helps if you set small goals. That way, getting those rare achievements doesn't seem so insurmountable.

I take a Zen approach to gaming and pace myself.

There is a link to the thread with the video on the first page.

His reply is directly on point. By arguing that the source that motivated the OP doesn't fall into the 90% he is also arguing, by way of inference, that this OP doesn't fall into the 90%. This is perfectly acceptable and typically does not require connecting the dots for an active thread participant.
