The First Person Camera perspective

A post in a series of discussions about Elder Scrolls Online in comparison with the Elder Scrolls series and other MMOs

How do you guys feel about the games' FPS camera?

Does it feel clunky, or does it work for you?

If is does not, is there anything you think the developers could do to improve it?

If it works for you, what do you think about all the complaints about this aspect of the game?

elderscrollsonline_1.jpg

NOTE: The game was originally designed in Third-person mode, like any standard MMO, but once they saw how people felt about fps in ES games they implemented an fps camera perspective.

I use first person about .0001% since closed beta in 2013

Further more I complain about ppl who attempt to play with others in first person because they can't see enough or keep up

    However
It's always been a player choice. It's no more clunky than any FPS or a POV game

    Reality:
Almost 99.7% of games aren't first person.
They are some camera fixated about a foot or 8-16 inches in front of where the nose is.

If it were actually first person, you would see your body like right now. IRL you don't walk around only seeing beyond your elbows with no body, legs feet

I think its great. Very well done.

if I did have a suggestion I would say to allow cosmetic fighting poses so you can alter the location of your weapons on the screen a little,

I use FPV for certain things like picking up crusty bread off tables, talking to npc in crowded areas. I like it. I play the single player elder scrolls games in first person, but mmo type games demand 3rd the vast majority of the time.

Having always played SP TES games (and Fallout 3/NV/4) in First Person, I wanted to play this game in first person. Spatial Awareness is what stopped me, not any real issues with the FPV. I go into it from time to time as it can make combat much more intense and help seeing things that I might want to pick up. Also helps me to see some armors better if I am curious about what someone else is wearing.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I used to use first person, as I came from the single player games, but I then found out how disadvantageous it is in vet dungeons and trials.

First person in any game makes me super nauseous so I only use it when I need my pointer to be extremely specific or if I wanna get a good look at a character's cool armour and/or pretty face  Plus I know how disadvantageous it is in most situations.

In trials, I pull the camera as far back as the environment will comfortably allow so that I can see and make sure the group is getting my buffs/heals.

I don't play any game in first person because they make me sick, just thinking about it makes my head spin. I even had a lot of trouble with Fallout 4 in third person with my FOV maxxed, as a result I never completed it.
The one thing that I dread now is new games that I love making me sick, my current dread being ME:Andromeda.. If I were a religious type I'd pray, but I'm not.

Luckily ESO is mostly fine in third person, unless of course I'm in Elden Root or any populated area frequented by people duelling treating me to a slideshow...

Generally, the game is just not built to be played in first person. You don't have enough situational awareness that way... you can't see when you walk into an enemy's aggro range, or when you have something behind you.

But there are two things I regularly do in first person mode:
    • Thieving
    • Traveling through hub cities

Thievery, I find, is much easier in first person view. There's a certain precision you need when you have several small containers close to one another, or single crates/barrels stacked on one another. It's hard to get your cursor in just the right spot sometimes. But in first person mode, it's fast and easy to just point, click, steal, and repeat. When I'm doing multiple rounds on my thief to grind for gold, first person makes the entire process much faster.

As for traveling through hub cities... one of my favorite parts of playing an MMO is seeing what other people do with their characters. That's right: all that work you put into making your character look awesome? Some people notice! :D So, I like to flip into first person mode and take a leisurely stroll around the crafting areas of busy cities like Shornhelm and Mournhold. You really can appreciate all the cool character designs up close that way... way better than third person. :)
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

Your arms don't match what's happening when you run in first person . I think that's on purpose though to avoid obscuring the view .

I always think of it as that special kid video and it frustrates me.

I like the option, but it could definitely use some improvements to make it a more viable choice contra third-person.

vma put a swift end to my first person enjoyment for serious content.

I still switch into first person when doing less intensive stuff, ya know immersion and such.

I played Oblivion and Skyrim on 1st person, so for a long time I played ESO the same. Then I did my first vet dungeon and cost the group a gold key in FG2... and so switched to 3rd person. Much easier.
Now I go back to 1st person only for the reasons others have described above, but I have the FOV limitation, it's tiny in comparison. Now if only they could make ESO in VR...

And when I play the remastered Skyrim I still use 1st person because I hate the way the character models run.

For some reason when I play first person shooters like TF2 it's fine, but if try to play an rpg in first person it feels wrong. I got sick in Fallout3& NV and Skyrim when I tried first person. Some things like archery aiming required it in Skyrim but then I found a third person archery mod and rejoiced. It makes me nauseous to use first person so I don't have an opinion on how they implemented it.

Usually I keep the camera right over my guys' shoulder. Like I'm the angel,or devil making his decisions. ;). I only pull back when I need to kite/run around aoes or if I'm in a group.

The arms just feel really goofy in first person. I know the idea is to give the player feedback, but mostly they just obscure my vision - and don't get me started on the buff/debuff visuals. I need to find a way to turn them off.

If I figure out that, combat might not be completely impossible. Still awful in terms of awareness. Out of combat it's nice for seeing little details.
