Difference between DLC and "Expansion"??

I just looked at the prices for the Morrowind DLC/Expansion. I am a bit confused. $49 is the price of an entire AAA game. Are we getting a whole new games worth of content with this? It didn't seem like it from the stream. New class (which is super cool), a new zone(always welcome), and battlegrounds (meh); 30 hours of content is what they said. I am struggling with how exactly this is different than a DLC. Is it because there is a new class?

The other thing people are complaining about is that Zeni has always said that DLC would be free for ESO+ members. So the real problem I guess is that they can selectively apply "DLC" or "Expansion" however they want. Technically any of the existing DLC could be "Expansions". It's easy to understand why people would be upset because 1) this doesn't feel very different than a DLC and 2) the price-point is the same as an entire AAA game.

If you compare the price of this to something like WoW or many other MMOs, this "expansion" pales in comparison. Look at WoWs latest. A new class, a whole new continent, new raids, new dungeons, new story, new mechanics, etc. The scale of the content is much larger. All that for $49. Something doesn't seem right there. Either the price or their definition of "expansion" or their original statement of ESO+ members will get all DLCs included.

I can see something like this that everyone should be super psyched about turning into a serious sour grapes.

DLC = smaller package (Thieves guild, Dark Brotherhood, Wrothgar) with smaller area (single zone) and shorter story.

Expac=much larger territory, probably multiple zones with more story, additional class

I would tend to agree but in the stream they said 30 hours and "a" new zone. This seems to me to be exactly what a DLC is. The new class is questionable. You would generally see something like a new class that accompanies a much larger content push. This seems like a DLC with a new class that they are charging a full AAA game price just for the upgrade.

It feels like something is missing here.

because they not yet get into detail about the content in it, give them the benefit of the doubt, and wait for couple months they will explain in the detail about Morrowind content

No. It's a digital download unless you specifically purchase the physical copy

I was just being tongue-in-cheek about ESO:Morrowind being both DLC and an Expansion since it will be downloadable content expanding upon the base game if you get the digital version.

An expansion would like add a whole new continent with a new race and a whole other story. Such content in said expansion would quite often contain almost as much content as the base game did.

Meanwhile DLCs are usually just smaller additions to the base game. Like a few new quests, a new map, or a few more items, or etc.

If you want to think of it in a much simpler way, then think of it like this. DLCs are just small patches to a game meanwhile a expansion is like adding a whole game on top of your base game

Why should ESO be any different?

can one buy orsinium and play the game?
can one buy thieves guild and play the game?
can one buy dark brotherhood and play the game?
can one buy shadows of the hist and play the game?
can one buy ESO One Tamriel and play the game?
can one buy ESO Morrowind and play the game?

Seems to me, two of these things are not like the other four on a very solid fundamental level.

I get where you are coming from but there are a few problems. 1) I don't know what 2 you are talking about (only ESO One Tam is playable by itself) and 2) almost no other expansions by themselves for any game ever are self contained games. In fact I can't think of a single one. Being bundled with the base game doesn't count. If that were the case you could say orsinium is playable by itself because of ESO Gold.

There's no such thing as far as I can see. What they're doing is selling the base game + Morrowind and calling it a new edition, but it's basically just a bundle no different from the Gold Edition. You can't buy and play Morrowind as a standalone.

They NEVER went F2P, they are B2P, there's a BIG difference. Second, I also believe what we are going to see are DLC releases individually for each 'game'. ESO will receive DLCs and Morrowind will receive DLCs, each separately. This is my opinion, but when asked, Gina did comment that ESO+ players who do not get Morrowind will still receive free DLCs. However, during the broadcast they also alluded to 'Clockwork City' as possible future content, and it wouldn't make sense for it to drop as part of the base game, so it seems (IMO) you'd still need Morrowind in order to play Clockwork City DLC.

Its a DLC being called an 'expansion' so that:

    1. They wont have to put it in the crown store. Been saving up crowns? Too bad, cash only.
    2. Even subscribers have to buy it! lol

I tend to agree with this. The language and what they said and didn't say is really the problem. They falsely set the expectations that ESO+ members would get all future content as long as they subbed. It's all about expectations and properly setting them.

I volunteer coach. One of the first things I do is have a parent expectation meeting with all the parents of the kids I'm going to coach. I tell them my philosophy and exactly what I am going to do and how their kid will work on my team. I don't leave any room for interpretation because failing to set the proper expectations ALWAYS leads to this.

If zeni had said ESO+ members will get DLC but not expansions and then explained in detail the difference, no one would be having this question today.

Because at the time they weren't planning on expansions, only DLCs. Things change. ESO+ will still get DLCs for base ESO game, so don't think we're done with ESO DLCs.

You are right. I meant B2P. I also believe you are right on all counts. If you own morrowind you will get any DLC "attached" to it if you sub.

I get what they are doing. This is potentially opening an entire new REASON to have a sub. "Not only do you get all the DLC for the base game, but if you own morrowing you get all that DLC too!!!!!!"

I'm not convinced this is actually an expansion because it doesn't really meet what would traditionally qualify as an expansion. It has the AAA price point which means you are going to expect an expansion that is the same size and scope of the full game. It has a new class, which IS generally an expansion only addition. But it sounds like it is a single zone and 30 hours of new story. This is DLC stuff. It's confusing.

Add to that their statements around giving ESO+ members access to all DLC and this feels kinda jippie. We are paying for a full game but getting DLC level content.

Technicalls an expansion is a bunch of DLCs put together to be released at the same time. Morrowind is way to much to be distributed with a mere DLC. They had the option to seperate the stuff to be released via 4-5 DLCs of to bundle and sell it. If you stick o the though, it has to be distributed via DLCs, no problem. Imagine Morrowind being distributed the DLC way and in about 18 months you would have gotten it by subbing ESO+. I am pretty sure, if you sub this long, you will own enough crowns, to buy it in the crown store by then. And CHING, got your way.

If you don't want to wait that long, buy it.

It is identical to the Gold Edition for the other DLCs.

The Standard Edition comes with the base game (ESO) plus the Morrowind expansion. It's identical to buying Gold Edition for the other DLCs.
