Can't defeat the clannfear

Tewhano
Tewhano
I am stuck at the Daughter of Giants quest with the Ancient Clannfear in the Clannfear Roost. I have watch several videos that people have posted on defeating the clannfear and none even half way reseamble my experience. In every video I have watched the clannfear doesn't venture far from the mound and Lyris fights with it. The player stands back and tosses magic at the beast reducing it's health and finally killing it in a short battle. In my experience the clannfear is oblivious to Lyris and chases me around the entire area.I eventualy run out of health potions and die and each time my weapons are dimished in their usefulness. Has this stage of the quest stumped anybody else?

I don't remember this being a big problem.

Of course, I don't think I've done it since before they nerfed Silver Bolts.

I found it easy enough, as long as you mastered the basic. Block, dodge, etc... suure, if you just stand there in the red, you'll get tossed around by it, or run over, but if you don't... it aint that hard.

What class do you play? The Clannfear can be rooted/stunned and it's attacks can be blocked.

Try to use knockback/stun/root skills to give you time to move, deal damage and regenerate.
Try to circle it while continuously dealing damage instead of running away.
    Buff yourself with food.

You should be able to do this without Lyris's help ...

Blocking with a shield and interrupting attacks worked for me when combined with food buffs to health. Oh, and keep moving around!

That clannfear handed my butt to me a few times when I was brand new to ESO. In my case, what I had to learn was staying out of the red attack warnings when they appeared.

If you're having trouble with questing PvE, then I would assume that you're quite new to the game.

In this game, you're supposed to actually use and spam your abilities rather than hack and slash with your light and heavy attacks.

Try to do more of that, and you'll find game content much easier.

When I first did this quest way back shortly after launch I remember the fight being difficult, but I've never had any problems with it since. Maybe you could post some info about your build so we could give you some advice on what you could try? Like what class & level you are, what your magicka/health/stamina are at, what gear you're using, and what skills you're using. Also, are you using food? If you're having difficulty with a fight and you're not using food, that alone can make a huge difference.

This was my biggest problem when I first started playing. I was used to previous TES games where I mostly played by swinging a sword at things, and used magic rarely and situationally. That's not how ESO is built and I struggled for quite a while figuring that out. Maybe if I had a background in MMOs I wouldn't have had that problem.

Yeah, if you're a melee build, most monsters will absolutely ignore your companions. So, you have two options:

1: Pull out a ranged attack. Most classes have one pretty low on their tree, even if you don't use it atm. It might be unfamiliar, but it will keep you out of its aggro range. Just pewpew it once, then let Lyris wack at it for a few hits before hitting it again, and it should move its aggro to her.

2: Restrategize. You're not going to be able to beat every bad guy by hitting it harder than it hits you... some enemies will hit you harder no matter what. So, what you need to do is figure out how to manage this sort of encounter. Things like avoiding the red spots on the ground, getting out of the way of its charge attack, using debuffs and crowd control to gain the edge... Looking at the tools you have on hand and figuring out what you need to do to beat the bad guy is one of the most important learning experiences of this game. You have the tools you need to beat this guy... you just need to figure out what those tools are.

Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."

My recollection is that the quest mobs are always close to if not exactly at your character's level now. As others have stated, it's a matter of staying out of the red (e.g. telegraphed moves). It takes some doing to figure it out, but once you do you can pretty much apply that concept to the rest of the game :)

You might also consider checking your armor, which takes a beating during normal combat, especially if you die. Examining your armor should show you a health bar. If it's full, you're good. If it's running low, it's not nearly as protective as it was at full health, which means you'll get hit harder no matter what you're fighting. Go to any merchant and you can repair it for a small fee. (It's also a good habit to repair whenever you see a quick armor repair button when you go to a shop.)

When you see the red circle, block. Then heavy attack.
When you see the red "corridor", just walk out of it. Note, sometimes the red animation on NPC "red corridor" charges goes in the wrong direction. So just to be safe, I always move laterally no matter what direction the red corridor is facing.

Also 1 - do you have a food buff active? Eat some bread or roast pig or something to get your health up before the battle.

Also 2 - Try adding more heavy armor.

Level shouldn't matter really - this was originally a level 15 quest so you don't need AOE or anything like that.

Also 3 - All creatures reset their health to 100% if you pull them too far out of their area, so you can't retreat too far away or it goes back to 100% health.

If I remember correctly this one was a bit difficult the very first time I did it.

But it's basically just a big clanfear.

For practice go to a smaller clanfear and just practice blocking and moving as I described above without attacking it. After a while you'll start to see just how easy it is to avoid a clanfear's attacks.

When you've managed to stay alive without attacking for about 5 min, add in heavy attacks right after you block or avoid it's heavy attacks.

No - level is the most important thing - but it is not character level but individual skill line level that matters. In one tamriel you can do this quest at level 3 (straight out of coldharbour and taking the first main quest that pops up), but your skill lines may be level 1!!! Lower level means less skills/tools for the job.

OP, blocking and staying out of the red are the most important things even though you do not damage the enemy you must prioritise staying alive. If you have a heal (either restoration staff or a class skill) then so much the better.

If you have an ability that does damage over time then drop that on the clanfear and run around in big circles, as he will take damage and not be able to hurt you back.

Finally, as people said, if you stop damaging the clanfear for a little bit then it will eventually turn its attention to lyris - when that happens get stuck in, and then back off as soon as it targets you.
#1 tip (Re)check your graphics settings periodically - especially resolution.

One thing about the Game given companions, they make excellent tanks. They will draw and hold aggro on the mobs for you, as long as you let them attack first, or if you need to get an attack in to get it started, let the companions then draw the aggro.

Stand back and use Ranged attacks as suggested above. And you should be good.

One thing to let you know about, one of the upcoming battles (second to last I think don't want to say more so as to not spoile) has a mechanic where you need to Interrupt the Boss while he is healing. You will need to be able to do this from range, or have a gap closer slotted to get up close and bash. Just letting you know now so you can prepare for that fight. Reason, the pesky boss will just keep healing himself and you will never get the fight over with if you don't interrupt his heals.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Remember levels do not matter with TO now, so it is not a matter of his level. He has to learn mechanics. Block, dodge, and staying out of the red. These are skills that will be required as you continue your journey. If you simply think you can stay in the red, you will be kicked from groups if you play end game dungeons. You have to learn game mechanics.

Block and dodge, let Lyris tank it. I usually like to watch Lyris get run over a few times and let it munch on her head for some entertainment. Throw in a few sneaky punches while it's attacking Lyris and basically don't let it hit you.

It's really easy. I honestly didn't think this fight would ever be an issue for anyone :open_mouth:

Like others have commented, you'll need to practice your roll dodges, strafing out of its AOEs, and bashing and blocking at the right times. The good thing is that you'll come out of this better prepared for future fights. I remember struggling with that exact fight in the beta.

This. Dodge its big attacks. Move around when it focuses on you and it will after a bit focus back on lyris.

At lower level look to see what heal options you have. If none, come back later.

Seriously. You can rescue lyris at level 30 or cp160. By then you will have lotsa tools in your toolbox.

If you think this specific quest is difficult, wait until you reach "Valley of Blades" Main Quest... it used to be the only quest of the Main Quests that I would die at least once- in the crypt. Interestingly enough, last night I ran this quest on a new alt for the first time since OT launched, and was shocked at how easy it was now... they definitely toned it down a LOT. I was at level 19, and noticed that now all the 'ancient warriors' will aggro on your companions- previously they would almost always come after you... second, I noticed that now the warriors tend not to spawn in multiples... previously you could have two or three of the ancient warriors spawned at the same time. I finished all the Main Quests up to the one where I have to meet Raz in Skywatch... I found them all to be extremely easy now... albeit, I do have 532 CP too. ;)

truthfully large pools and stronger gear are not as big as before - cuz if your gear is scaled to your level then it scales up with you. lvl 10 gear on lvl 10 char is about the same as lvl 40 gear on lvl 40 char.

But the huge gains are more in the first pieces - morphs help and maxed skills help but the real gains for leveling are unlocking more skills and from them more options as well as unlocking bar swaps - which means more skills available.

if this character is taking on the Clanfear at level 14 or lower, they dont have bar swaps.
they may not have any triggered heal.
    Likely no shields.

Taking down that clanfear with hardened ward, encase, dark conversion, mprphed pet clicks for healing or bursts, etc will be a lot different than taking it on with maybe 2 skills per class line unlocked.

But then, they could be taking this on as early as maybe lvl 7.

Clannfears have two major attacks that are telegraphed: a spinning tail swipe AoE and a charge. Both attacks should give you ample time to readjust and strike from a different angle. Just keep the pressure up and you should prevail. Barring that, just make sure you have some pots slotted and eat some bread beforehand.

    Good luck!
