Did something change? for me it feels exactly as it was before. The only thing I've noticed that is different is HDR support which darkens the whole game by default.
I would invest in Zenimax just to see them do a proper night where it's really dark and we'd have to use some kind of lamp to make it through the night. How I would love to see dungeons getting this dark...the immersion!
Just look at the night in Dragons Dogma http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll238/GabrielK2000/Dragons Dogma/June 15 2012/DragonsDogmaScreenshot_5.jpg
Now that's amazing!

OP must be coming from SWTOR? No day/night cycle in that game was a great disappointment for me.
Yes, just would be cool to have an addon to darken the night even more to few meters visibility. Like Skyrim mods, so the hand torches and bugs in jars have some love too and running at night in hostile territory would be even more immersive.
I love weather, dynamic environments and day / night cycles in game - static environments are very boring (I played SWTOR and it was a huge let down not seeing even basic day / night cycles).
That said - while I'd be all for more options (some of which already exist) to let players darken the nights, I for one do not want pitch black areas.
For me true darkness fails in a game I have to interact with by using a visual display device - all it does is leave me squinting at the monitor and ending up getting a headache from eye strain while turning up the gamma and white washing everything.
Oh and to the person using the word 'nerds' to describe anyone who doesn't want super dark can't see anything but a black screen nights no matter the individual settings, that is priceless coming from someone playing an Elder Scroll game and talking about immersion.
However, I also think it fails in terms of gameplay. It really gets too dark to do, well, anything. And it also doesn't help that your enemies are never affected by the dark either. So while you can't see them, they have no problem seeing you.
