MagSorc Sustain Question

Croblasta
Croblasta
So this is a question regarding unorganized 4 man dungeons.

I've been working on my rotationanimation canceling and mixing in light attacks.

Currently running 5 Julianos/4 Destructive Mage/2 Llambris (I chose destructive for the Magika, Spell Damage and Crit). I'm around 41k magika.

As I'm running my rotation (standard LL, Blockade, Pulse, Curse, Frag Proc with LA mixed in) especially during longer fights, I'm running out of magika.

My question is am I doing something wrong or lacking the additional sustain that is used in organized dungeons and trials.

If I need more sustain, is it mixing in pots, enchants, abilities that add sustain or a 4 piece with magika regen? What magika regen should I ideally be at?

Thanks for your help!

I made a magsorc recently and run this exact setup. Heavy attack weaving in between skills helped me to sustain quite a bit. Also I use energy overload in long fights to get back magica. Nonetheless I'd appreciate some input from vet sorcerers in this subject as I'm new to the class myself.

You need to have a sustain set you will run out of magic quick with that sets you can use ele drain siphon spirit, medicinal use, regen or cost reduction glyphs on jewelry vampire. I said screw it and run resto lich with belt and jewelry.

Sorcerna, proud beta sorc. RIP April 2014 to May 31 2016 DArk Brotherhood. Out of retirement for negates and encases. Sorcerna will be going back into retirement to be my main crafter Fall 2018. Because an 8 k shield is f ing useless. Died because of baddies on the forum. Too much qq too little pew pew. 16 AD 2 DC. 0 EP cause they bad, CP 2300 plus 18 level 50 toons. I have the same problem, and I was wondering if it'd be worth it to change spell damage jewellery enchants for magicka regen enchants, or use a set with regen bonuses, in the expense of damage. I was looking up builds online and I read in one guide (i believe it was one of Deltia's builds) that you can slot Dark Conversion in the Overload bar in order to top up magicka between fights, but that obviously requires to use Overload as one of your ultis, other than that I haven't found any other suggestions, so any advice would be very welcome.

I stopped using OL because I read it's not ideal for DPS in trials (which is my goal). All the builds I read are straight DPS with gear and enchants so I wasn't sure if I was missing something or in more organized groups provide sustain to magsorcs through buffs.

    Dark conversion
    Overload
    Few heavy attacks.

I run like 900 something regen and with those methods sustain pretty fine

I have a similar setup. A few things I do to help my sustain are, mix in a some heavy attacks, use potions, and ask if the healer can use ele drain or orbs.
Additionally I use short bursts of overload and I have dark conversion on the overload bar too.

Its either you sustain or you sorc. You don't do both.

OP if you're really having that much trouble, you could use a cost reduction glyph for now. Also stack points into tenacity. Time your pots well. The builds you are referring to are highly reliant on group support, so its fine to water those down for pugging.
I know that I wouldn't be able to perfectly sustain a 8 min long fight without ele drain or blue orbs. vMA is different obviously cause you kill stuff so you make use of the destro passive.

Energy Overload is certainly a good DPS ulti and a great way to get magicka back. Also having a good surplus of trash magicka potions helps if you run out of the crafted ones.

For more organized endgame PvE dps at least, magicka sustain comes from several sources, both from yourself and from healers.

For your own sustain, put all of your green CP into Magician and Arcanist. Make sure to have any class, light armor, destro staff, mage's guild, racial, and undaunted passives. I also run as a vampire on my mag sorc for that 10% extra regen. Level up alchemy to get medicinal use 3/3 and chug pots (I use spell power pots for major sorcery + restore max magicka + magicka regen). Weaving helps too.

However, even with all that by yourself, you're still going to run out of magicka. But for dungeons and trials, there's usually healers to help, and boy can they help! Worm armor, elemental drain, siphon spirit (or minor magickasteal next update), plus orbs, shards, and any other synergies can give you back lots of extra magicka.

But in cases (unorganized dungeons) where there isn't a healer that can offer that support, you can always use heavy attacks (especially with lightning staves in mobs), use overload, or you can switch to the Red Frothgar drink (max health + magicka regen) instead of a max health + max magicka food. You can also swap out a mundus for the Atronach, though I really like the extra crit from Thief.

But in decent groups, I only run with ~850 regen and that's plenty.

    5 Julianos (Front Bar)
    5 Lich/Warlock/Magica Furnace/Amberplasm (back bar)
    2 Monster set of choice

Appropriate use of potion and you will only in out of magic when you die and get razed or make a mistake.

Factor in energy overload and dark conversion you should never be out of magica.

Dark Deal is all you need tbh, and still have all DPS and no sustain sets. If it's a trial the the Healers should be using Elemental Drain, Siphon, and Orbs.

You can regain mag if you lightning staff mobs in dungeons. So burn boss, regain mag with lightning heavy while doing aoe. Or demand the healer to run orbs and ele drain. You there. ORB.

    900 sustain here.
    Perfectly fine.

    Heavy lightning for mobs.
MAYBE heavy fire for single targets. Weaved, of course.
    Energy Overload.
    Dark Conversion.
Cost reduction CP > regen CP in that case.

Also, ask your healer if he can run Elemental Drain.
    Same with orbs.
    Look for synergies.

Don't sustain on mag sorc as a damage dealer. It's not your job, it's not your strength.
And above all, just kill stuff faster!

Yep it's pretty brutal, in pug groups i usually drop curse/mages's wrath for ele drain. One cost reduction glyph can be useful too, and at the moment i have overload front barred (losing meteor so 2% max magic and regen) but have dark conversion on there, plus overload can come in handy for other utility skills like streak/ inner fire etc. And can be very useful in itself (vWGT hm execute phase springs to mind)

And lose damage plus health, that's the problem.

If running with pugs, you want 17.5k health probably. Witchmother won't allow that. Shield should be on back bar for emergency only. Switching mundus from thief/shadow will lose a lot of damage.

    Dark deal,
    Overload
    Few heavy attacks.
    Potions

Like I said, I run 900 regen. I never find it a problem in dungeons.

A good heal support with elemental drain, orbs (sometime siphon and worm) deals with this problem well. On my mag sorc I almost never run our magica in 4 man dungeons. However, without our heal I can feel huge difference. So I would advice to stop running with pugs and found good support :)

PS- I use standard max-stat food and don't have any mana regen sets (BSW+Illmbris+IA), 1 glyph for mana regen

I had the same issue how i resolved this as previously mentioned by others

-Witchmothers brew (should be enough alone)

    If not
-Run Elemental drain (yes the healer should use this but usually they don`t)

    -Trash magic pots too

Please OP don`t go for a sustain set like Lich or Warlock or others, really as a DPS you shouldn`t need the sustain set or the recovery glyphs, in my opinion you are gimping yourself and losing damage potential by doing that.

As others have mentioned... while the stuff like ele drain etc is really good, the single biggest impact will be from lightning staff heavy attacks.

There is hardly anything in the game that doesn't have a part of the fight where there are some adds to kill... so swap to a lightning staff bar and heavy attack them between dropping your DOTs.... your DPS goes up from the lightning heavies... and your sustain will be better from the magicka return (Just make sure you finish the heavy attack).

    Win/Win :)
