ESO and Harassment

I am concerned with what im hearing in the community. I know of players getting relentlessly harassed in this game and even when reports are made not much seems to get done. People leave guilds to try and start over but that doesnt solve the problem. Now I hear ESO wont even allow a name change to get away from these toxic players.

    This.

And sometimes there is more to the story. In a previous game had people complain about a player harassing them. When I looked into it for guildies I found there was often more to the story. Of course trolls do exist, but the majority of players have better things to do than harass someone and Zos has a vested interest in eliminating true harassment.

Some people just need to man up. It's a game, just report them, put them on the ignore list and be done about it. Move on and enjoy the game and the good people.

Harassment is a part of online gaming in a MMO environment this is nothing new.

People will be morons as they always have been.

I'll man up and say I'm an offender but at least I say sorry and apologies when I'm in the wrong.

    Can't be said for some.

Not only are people getting harassed often, but also criticised in an exagerated manner about their playing ability. Instead of offering helpful insight into certain mechanics of the game, such as dungeons, many players receive a heavy dose of unfair criticism. Which then makes a few players quit the game.

I have also heard of others who received private messages from people cursing them out over a small thing such as leaving the group when doing a dungeon.
I myself have received such messages.

ESO should allow a name change but will this stop other bullies from harassing them?

Whenever I get dropped into a dungeon group with the occasional jerk that complains about other group members I try and turn the tables on them. My favorite strategy is to pretend in group chat that I'm friends with the jerk and that we are both members of a Khajiit ERP group. I reminisce about how much fun we had at our last meetup, how cute they looked in that pink and purple dress, how heated things got when that unsuspecting nord walked in on us, etc. When they deny it I just say "Oh don't be shy, I'm sure these guys are cool!"

By that point the troll usually runs away and I have a good laugh with the remaining members of the group.

Another strategy that I like (that I stole from @Daraugh ) is to be as sickeningly-sweet and polite to the jerk as possible. Trolls hate it when you don't react like they expect you to.

EDIT: Forgot one of my favorites! In Cyrodiil I respond to hate tells by trying to quote loading screen / death recap tips.

My ignore list has expended considerably the better I get at PVP.

I'm a pretty easy going guy, but you wouldn't believe the vile things some people say over the internet.

So I save shame screenshots of the best "I hope you get cancer, then drink dran-o and vomit till dead" stuff and ignore the person.

There is a reason I do not use group chat and have a tendency now to turn off text chat. I also have 'Auto Decline Duels" turned on just to top it off. All very unsociable of me but I do not get harassed.

Having played other MMO's, I would say that ESO is one of the least toxic communities I've ever played in. Try playing some other MMO's if you want to see what real harassment looks like. Hell, try out a game like Eve Online sometime, where harassment is not only the norm, it's actively encouraged.

I need to give the erp one a try, that sounds fun! It's so much fun to watch trolls get unbalanced and wonder which way they'll fall. Honestly, I've even been pleasantly surprised before!

Oddly, ESO is the only place I've encountered any personal harassment in an MMO(Zone/Trade doesn't count). It was twice, wasn't major and the person was content to let ignore work, but just wanted to add my (purely anecdotal) evidence.

That being said, it's rare, but some people aren't content to just let ignore work. Because it's constantly going on sale, many people have multiple accounts. Some get their friends to get in on it. And they often target those who have less resistance to it. Sure, ignore works most of the time. Some times it doesn't, and during those times ZOS should step in.

There are basically groups of people in this game that buy multiple accounts just to Troll and Harass. That is the game to them.

ZoS should start offering consequences, they really don't seem to be set up to even investigate Harassment of any kind and that is going to bite them in the ass the first time the media gets a hold of a perceived hate or Cyber-bullying action that they can sensationalize.

Blizzard, Arenanet,Turbine, Cryptic all have methods to keep this in check, and ZoS should as well.

People looking to be offended will always find harassment around every corner no matter what ZOS does or doesn't do. As it stands, it's not a real problem in ESO and ZOS has enough to worry about already just trying to keep the game working. Making a futile effort to appease the hyper-sensitive crowd would just be a waste of resources.

Real harassment is when people start stalking you, sabotaging everything you do, try to get you banned and what not. There are quite a few of those still reading these forums and acting like normal human beings, that are doing everything in their power to improve the game, but yet when they're in it, they love wreaking havoc and causing drama. I just can't help but facepalm whenever I see them post here and act like there's nothing wrong with them.

I think I've only muted 2 people in almost 2 years. Playing with area chat off is quite nice sometimes.

Still, best advice is just to move on with your day. It's just words. No one is actually going to come to your house. And if they do, call the police.

I don't think i remember ever having harassment from players however there was once when i was in deshan and some younger kid was on area chat swearing and using the N words all the time and some bad racist things .. so i went on the area chat and just said " you do realize you can be reported for the things you are saying and get your account banned right? " he stopped and said sorry and then said i have a really deep voice and i sound like im a hitman or batman LOL ..

to which i replied " BECAUSE IM BATMAN"

Its Christmas season in our office and I was getting all salty that any bottles of wine or spirits just got claimed by whoever they were for and not shared around so everyone in the office at least had one. It was really winding me up. I then did a bit of browsing on here, got my knickers in a twist on a few posts about housing and other things.

I then stumbled on a number of videos on youtube where Taylor swift (love or hate her) had been to hospitals visiting kids with terminal cancer. SMACK IN THE FACE. I literally sat there at work, tears down my face.

Suddenly all my woes about free wine faded into the background of insignificance.

I would suggest, like others have done – use ignore, be thankful for what you have and move on.

Only once i've been in a situation where i felt very uncomfortable to the point that i ended up deciding not to play that part of the game for a while just to avoid this person. Block/ignore didn't help in the slightest.

My block/ignore list is empty and people that say theirs are full are most likely the ones that send stupid flame messages in pvp and then get mad for the response they get to it, however that's not harrassment not even close IMO.
