Has anyone tried this and can confirm one or the other?
lightning staff is the only offensive weapon which its basic dmg is directly boosted through 3 CP stars: elemental expert, thaum and staff expert
4 CP stars. You forgot elfborn.
For a mDK I would recommend Infallible Aether + Sergeant's Mail. Your heavy attacks will hit much harder than with elegance. That's what I use for vMA on my mDK and it's pretty easy to get on the leaderboards with that setup.Sergeants mail is heavy armor isn't it? And it's bonuses are pretty weak for a magicka char, but I heard it's pretty good, I might give it a try! Getting on the leaderboards was my intention as well.
I've been doing some math:
An example that fits would be 8k per tick of the heavy attack, which is similar to what i get right now, depending on enemies resistance. Elegance would boost that by 1.6k (8k*1.2), which is basically the same as sergeant's mail. But the first four passives from elegance increase the damage of everything else by a lot more (more max magicka, more spell damage. Plus, you need to use three healthy jewelry from sergeant's mail if i'm not mistaken, which takes out a lot of max magicka. If there is arcane jewelry, it might be worth considering, but i cant see the set out-dpsing elegance right now....
I have tried elegance. Seargent's mail is just better for heavy attack DPS but elegence will help your other skills.
Here's the secret to my 100k heavy attacks though. Use sergeant's, aether, VMA lightning staff and thief. Then I use a charged resto staff with a shock enchant on the back bar to help proc off balance in the lightning wall of elements. With my precise staff I am at 70% crit chance. So when the enemy is off balance in my wall of elements and I am fully self buffed up with molten armaments, combat prayer, rearming trap, and Standard of Might each critical tick hits for about 22-25k and the final hits pulses for 27-30k although I have seen over 33k+ on the crematorium guards but I think they have like negative shock resistance because they are what I hit the hardest.
You sure you used the right set? Queens Elegance increases light/hvy damage by 20%, how would that "increase other skills"? There's no way a stam set that has fixed damage comes close to competing.

You already get 80% damage to heavy attacks with molten armaments and champion points. Another 20% isn't as significant as adding 1500 to each tick or 6k to each heavy attack. Seargent's mail 5th piece bonus is bigger than the maelstrom staff bonus.

Wait it adds the 1500 per tick? That does change a lot. I assumed it was just on the final hit.
