I would love it if followers and the marriage system were present in ESO

First, I don't rightly know if the topic in question has already been discussed. My thoughts are as stated in the title. Some of the npcs you meet in ESO you grow an attachment to, and I wish I could take them into battle similar to how SWTOR does that system. Same with romance. I know some people are against it, but the older I get, the more I appreciate some good old romance flavor. Along with this "housing" thing I keep hearing about, it would make sense to put these two together. Plus it helps with immersion and would draw me more into this would if I could take someone with me while I'm not doing group activites. Explore the world with a companion. Though romance and marriage aside, the biggest thing I want is to be able to have a follower when I'm not grouping with guildies or doing dungeons.

Take Eveli Sharp-Arrow for instance. Throughout the Orsinium main quest, you get to understand her and become invested in making sure her wellbeing is being accounted for... At least for me. I fell in love with her. Her humor, mannerisms, her concerns and fear. I was pretty worried when she got captured and put everything else aside to make sure she was fine. And in the end, it would make sense lorewise to meet up with Eveli again since she says our paths would one day cross again. Its with many other npcs throughout ESO also. Like Naryu Visran, or Velaste.

I like ESO. If I didn't, I wouldn't of played this long. But the world feels empty, especially when people whom you grew close with in the game no longer play anymore. Being able to have Eveli with me would help me enjoy the game a whole lot again.

The problem with followers is if it had them, few people would group up in a game that encourages being sociable.

Single player games have them so you can have people tagging along on your adventures. Here, there's lots of players you can take with you on an adventure.

I get what your saying, and some of the characters here are awesome, I would love to adventure forever with Naryu Virian or Cadwell, however that can't happen. So when we do see them again, it feels a little more special.

thats not true at all, dungeons and dragons online MMO allows you to have as many as 6 followers help you in caves and dungeons and they have Tons of groups available in zone chat constantly asking for group just like we have in eso,. same thing in sevearal other MMO's. it is more common then people realize.

this simply allows those of us whom love to solo things able to have some help of NPC's with us.

I get that lots of different people have lots of different play styles, heck, I solo must of the stuff, but I personally just don't see NPC followers as an essential thing in an MMO. Single player games, certainly so. But this is not a single player game, as it does have group focused content.

The great thing is though that people can have differing opinions, and each opinion is viable

I wouldnt care either way. Though I would prefer if they were surface only and not allowed in any instanced dungeons even if you enter solo.

I did enjoy having companions in swtor. Poor Lydia ran in front of me while i was casting a nasty spell and got nuked :confounded: It was on the boss fight and I hadn't saved inside the dungeon and didn't feel like doing it over again so she stayed dead.

I think companions or followers would be fun in eso though it would be weird seeing tons of Evelis running around

Oh I hope that never happens. Romances are the worst part of every modern RPG. I just hope that fad dies out quickly. How can you fall in love with an NPC anyway?
Besides, there is already a marriage system in the game, just not with NPCs. You can even buy a wedding dress and a suit in the crown store for RP.

As for followers, that would require a real combat AI to be made. Most of the story followers are just invincible, but take that away and they would be horrible in combat.

And then you have the issue of pregnancy in a world with zillions of deaths and no births. Not a child to be found.

    Kid pets perhaps?

Seriously, single player games cater to our fantasy lives in ways online games cannot. In a single player game you can be the almighty hero, the Master Chief, the Red Baron, Geralt of Rivia, all sorts of singular characters. The entire structure of the game is designed to comply with your fantasy.

This cannot happen in an mpgame. Other people are present. You cannot be something you're not. Your character in an online game is the sum of your strengths and flaws. The ultimate quest destination in an online multiplayer game is being introduced to yourself.

The more online games stray from this fundamental fact, the sillier they become. Followers, faux romances, and additional NPCs tied to PCs detract from the strengths of the genre. We already have hundreds of smiling merchants with '50s era push up bras and bankers in need of Rogaine.

I don't know . The whole romance option in swtor felt cringey for me . I just can't get excited about romance when I'm killing . But if you want it it's ok by me . I'd just like an opt out feature to skip that quest stuff .

As an MMO, if you put in a little bit of of time and effort, you can have all the interaction and companionship you want - and more - with someone far better than any NPC; you can have it with another player. Indeed that is one of the great beauties of MMOs: you get to share this world with friends, and make new and interesting like-minded ones.

And if you really want to be immersive in your contact with others, there is type of player/RPer that likes to stay In-character basically 100% of the time. I admit it's not the same as having a scripted NPC follow you around; it's likely much better.

Heh, I thought the same when Talviah asked me to let him know if I was going on any adventure because he wanted to tag along (on the second or third time we meet him). I imagined that, if there were companions, that would be the part when you are able to recruit Talviah and thought "Oh dear, I would if I could". Well, not the marriage part, but the follower part.

But I have to say "no" to fighting companions. Fighting companions in a MMO are a complicated addition. If they are allowed in instances, they will be desirable for that extra DPS (even if it isn't a big difference) and people who do not like them will feel the need to use them anyway to be competitive (even worse, there might be "BiS companions" if they have different skills and roles). A little like using food, but actually annoying if you don't like the "BiS companion". Plus, people will be able to solo dungeons more easily with them. Those factors can lead to the content being made with them in mind, which will alienate people who do not want to use them. They end up being "optional but not really" on this case.

I think something could be done about these beloved characters with housing, though. I would love to be able to ask NPCs to move in, and it could give another weight to certain decisions. Maybe you killed a character I didn't, so I can ask that character to move in but you can't. Maybe I made a character mad but you didn't, so you can ask them to move in but I can't. There are some pretty big houses, and it would be kinda sad if they were all empty.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

    Ahem.....MMORPG

There, I fixed it for you.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis
