Bloodthorn Set - What is direct damage?

The set says it restores magicka and stamina on direct damage, so what is that exactly?

Also is the set worth it for the 500-600 every 5 seconds?

Direct damage is in theory anything time you deal upfront damage from an activated skill. It should exclude dot ticks and procs but there are some skills that act like direct damage each tick or trigger even if its not player activated.

5-600 per 5 seconds is like 200 passive regen so the closest equivalent set would be amberplasm or willows path, both of which I think would/could scale better than bloodthorn. The only advantage I could see of bloodthorn is in generating stamina whilst blocking because passive regen stops when you block.

Yeah you could generate stam by bashing during block with enough cost reduction.

There are better sets out there. Bloodthorn would be quite good if the cooldown was lowered to 4s and the procc value was upped to like 850ish. But in the current state, its not rly worth using. Amberplasm for one is a set that will easily outclass bloodthorn, altho its somewhat harder to get.

Or just block cast any ability that deals direct damage, even a magicka one would work.

Yes. I only realised a few days ago that for example wrecking blow is a DoT (!).

Mechanics are also not completely consistent and you cannot trust damage numbers colour entirely AFAIK.

    However (and this could be wrong, feel free to correct it, it is just my best understanding) this is how it works. I did some testing when sorc prison had that "only break on direct damage" effect which allowed a good testing environment. (At the time I wanted to see if staff heavy attacks were technically DoTs XD );

    DoT:

Anything that says "does X damage over Y seconds" (but NOT "does X damage every Y seconds for Z seconds".)

Anything which counts as a channel (this includes stuff like flurry and wrecking blow).

    Direct damage:

    Everything else including light/heavy attacks.

I am a bit unsure about the exact classification of daedric curse and shalks.

I once saw a post similar to this one and remember someone posting this answer in response...

“If I Punch you in the face, that’s direct damage. If I Light you on fire that’s damage over time.”

It made me laugh so I figured I would pass it along lol.

The Riposte passive from atronach CP also counts as direct damage :)

    Funny

But not necessarily according to ZoS logic:

Punch you in the face after a wind-up (ok I punch with a giant maul but it´s called an 'uppercut') = DoT.

Light you on fire for 7 seconds with a giant elemental fire storm = Direct damage.

Bloodthorn is primarily a set for magdk. Its benefits over amberplasm or other regen based returns are the ability to proc it after mist form and during block, thus being far superior to amberplasm on magdk or any build that relies on block casting and mistform and has low regen multipliers.

Direct damage is eg. flames of oblivion, first scratch of burning embers, whip, light attack, bash, etc.

Actually Bloodthorn vs Amberplasm is very close. Amberplasm gives generally better regen since it's affected by modifiers (a bit less so in no CP) and works when not attacking. Bloodthorn can be used as a frontbar regen set and restores stamina while blocking. Certainly one of the better sets around. At 850 per 4 sec you'd be looking at something better than Amberplasm pre nerf.

I use Bloodthorn on my Tank/DPS hybrid. It works great for that particular combo because I am able to block-cast whip, which is free after I drop blockade with my lightning staff backbar and the enemies are off-balance. However, if you ask me Bloodthorn is very niche, and with the changes to harness magicka this last patch requiring 5 light, that particular build has been hit hard.

Fun fact, magden can use fletcher to proc bloodthorn because it’s considered direct damage
