Tanking Topic: Resistance Cap, Elemental Defender , Hardy

First Question: Does Elemental Defender and Hardy champion points add anything to a tank already at the resistance caps?

I know this question has been answered in other threads in this forum and in others. I've researched the hell out of it before starting my own thread. The community appears to be split on the correct answer. Yes, I have read this thread https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/279426/damage-mitigation-explanation-and-list-of-options/p1 but it is contradicted by several others like this one https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/264661/if-i-am-at-resistance-cap

Second and More Important Question

I feel like the only way to resolve the dispute is by experimentation: get up to spell cap - have someone do dmg to you - jot it down - put some points into elemental defender and hardy (above and beyond resistance cap) - have someone do dmg to you - jot it down - compare.

Has anyone already tried this? Would rather not spend a bunch of money on CP respec.

Yes, you don't need to test it all the info is readily available. Hardy/elemental def is a must have for every possible build. It reduces dmg in addition to your armour and can't be reduced by debuffs.

As the creator of the Damage mitigation explanation guide I can tell you that all my data can be recreated. What you explained is basically what I did my first few times I tested mitigation. My knowledge has since increased and I can do a lot more testing than before. If you want to do your town testing I would suggest this. Take of all passives and armor and CP and then get hit by a mob, see their attacks base damage and then use that attack and that attack only for your testing. Just pick one you think is good to test with. I usually use the big conal from the Giants by Shatul wayshrine. I used to use the storm atronachs bash in Craglorn but switched later on.

Test away if you doubt my research, and I am not saying that with malice, I mean test it your self so you can get into the habit of testing stuff. Learn more about the game. It has at least made me a better players. Go have some fun, WITH SCIENCE!!!!

    Paul:

I appreciate your response. The one thing I wasn't sure about after reading your thread (perhaps because I'm not smart enough), was whether this conclusion:
And on the note of resistance. Elemental or Poison/Disease resistance is calculated as part of the Spell or Physical resistance each time it is used it simply adds to the base resistance anytime that element is used against you. However if you hit the Resistance cap then the elemental resists doesn't add anything more.

Was based on logic, assumption, or testing.

So to be clear, based on your testing, elemental defender and hardy add nothing in addition to resistance cap (i.e. they are wasted points if you are already at spell cap)?

I like experimentation, but not in areas where there is already a clear answer.

    Thanks, again.

Really, what I am getting at is whether there is merit in building a tank with 5pc Footman / 5 pc Armor Master (or Ebon or Hist) and the Chudan Monster set. The idea would be to free up traits and champion points to be spent on something else like bastion iron clad or quick recovery.

First of I would really not recommend any of those sets except Ebon and hist until you get something better. But what I mean in that passage is that Glyphs or passives that increases Elemental resistance like how dunmers are resistance to fire adds nothing to the spell resistance. BUT Elemental Defender is a completely different thing and 100% stacks with your spell resistance. if you had 100p into elemental defender plus capped spell resistance your mitigation against spells would be: 0.5*0.75=0.375 which is 62.5% total mitigation.

    @Lawhawk and @paulsimonps

Thank you for the threads, I was unsure about this myself.

So it is actually useful to pump points into Hardy and Elemental defender, which goes against what I have heard ingame from other players.
