The list goes on, yes they have done some horriable things but that's what makes TES universe so great EVERY RACE has done wrong none are without sin. Altmer for magicka builds, save DK, where Dunmer is clearly better.
Nord for stamina builds, especially tank.
They have racial bonuses that favor certain build/roles and there's little to no overlap between them.

✭✭NordAt least with nords what you see is generally what you get, plus, as usual in games, if you want a female character that looks like she can actually do something with that sword and not just lug it around your pretty much stuck with nords anyway

Actually, lore wise, the Ayleids and Altmers are branches of the original Aldmeris Elves.
When the Elves settled Summer Set Isle after leaving Altmeris, they broke into different branches of Elves. The Ayleids settled Cyrodiil, and the Altmer are who stayed in Summer Set. You also have the Chimer, Dwemer, Bosmer, Falmer, Orsimer, and Maomer Elves, who also left Summer Set at that time. Also, the Ayleid Elves became the "Heart-Land Elves" or "Wild Elves" after the Alessian Slave Revolt and became the elvin half of the Bretons.
So basicaly, to say "Altmer" does not equate to all Elves, just a branch of the original Ehlnofey.
