Since most of us are not intimately familiar with ZoS's operations, we do not. Neither do you.
If the maintenance periods weren't necessary, why would ZoS perform them?
Do they just enjoy seeing us squirm?
Do they have a personal vendetta against Mr. Peter?
Does your outrage accomplish anything?

Wow.. can you be more ignorant
Almost all major mmo's do server maintenance weekly.. and yes server can become unstable and shut done if you do not do the maintenance... even more stable mmos then ESO do it. Maybe you should educate yourself about why and the effects of not doing it before running you mouth off...
@old_mufasa all MMOS do server maintenance weekly, but only ESO do weekly maintenance and on top of that there's extended maintenance on top of that there's extended maintenance on top of that there's extended maintenance on top of that there's extended maintenance for 12 hours.
Other MMO i play regularly do weekly maintenance, 30 minutes to 60 minutes TOP. No *** called extended maintenance, and when they do have extended maintenance, they put XP boost or something to compensate (even though they have no obligation to)
I still don't understand how company as big as ZOS still can't fix all these "extended maintenance" that's been there since August, wasnt it?

Dude come on, in another post today I gave ZOS the benefit of the doubt but this game has way more downtime than it should have and it's understandable why people get peeved by it.
It's even worse when it's unplanned, despite defenders views that people should just find something else to do, some people just have busy lives and like to PLAN how they are spending their spare time. When we have yet more extended or even unplanned downtime it gets under the skin.
You're right...
Next time we've got recurring rollbacks or some other catastrophic issue, let's just leave the servers up. It'll be frustrating to deal with, but hey, you can at least play the game. No matter that none of your progress will be saved.

Look @cjthibs , I've been down this conversation road with people here before.
YES sometimes they need to do these things BUT allowing for these things to consistently happen might be them "doing their jobs", but it's not doing their jobs well.

Now People moan when they do the weekly maintenance,
Poor ZOS, screwed if they don't , screwed if they do!!

Are you going to stop them?
Seriously though, this is funny...it is what it is. If their conduct isn't up to your standards (or anyone else's) I really don't know what to say.
Do you have some plan to fix it? ...or influence it at all?
The simple fact is that it's in their best interest to keep these things to a minimum. If they weren't necessary they wouldn't do it. Even if you think it's not up to par, it's what's needed. Why fret the little things?

YES, actually, allowing them to happen. As someone (appealing to authority, but I'm going to say it anyway) who runs a farm of servers running a service as hungry and as complicated as an MMO with far less money than ZOS, having maintenance is doing your job but having to re-enter maintenance consistently as well as extend maintenance consistently is bad planning, bad testing, bad practice.
Sys admins from other fields outside of gaming often blink in disbelieve at the stuff that gamers let gaming companies get away with. If I had to tell my boss 3 times in 3 months (let alone a single month) that we're going to have to extend our downtime past what we expected I'd be sacked, it's as simple as that.
I already defended ZOS in another post, but the "lolol omg they r do thir job" posts always crack me up and believe it or not some people can't just play whenever the whim takes them, they have to plan their spare time with little control over when that spare time will be. Extended downtime and even downtime in the middle of a week after already extended maintenance is going to get under peoples skin and when they are paying for the service they are going to let that company know they are not happy.
That's what happens, that's why people get annoyed on forums. They let ZOS know that they are not happy. Even more so when they took away EU friendly hours.
Running maintenance is doing your job, consistent extended maintenance and/or out of planned downtime hours is not doing their job.
Sorry ZOS, that's my view.

Sorry ZOS, that's my view.
Well, I've actually been a Systems Engineer/Project Manager for just under 15 years now.
There is a huge difference between working on mission-critical systems and working on a video game. There's also a huge difference in the expectations (or what's reasonable to expect).
The majority of my experience has been in and around the military, even managing some operational systems. -Those- systems, yes, absolutely must be treated in the way you're describing above. A major difference though, is that these systems are built on the methodology of earlier systems and are not allowed to be fielded in an operational manner until they've been tested for years and gone through an extensive certification process.
This usually means that we were actually fielding systems 5 or 6 years after they were coded. Patching would happen, but the majority of the code was locked and could not be changed. No new features, no major additions. (This situation is roughly equivalent to what you'd see now with something like World of Warcraft, whose base game was coded pre-2004.)
A new video game is so radically different that it's not even comparable. New features are added all the time, major additions, shifting requirements, on code that might be, in some cases, just a few months or even weeks old.
Testing isn't something that you can knock out in a weekend if you work really hard at it. It takes actual use of the system, on the scale you expect it to be used, to expose the majority of bugs. And the scale of an MMO is not even possible to test on a closed system, it takes use by thousands to expose the problems. Which is exactly what we're seeing. The issues causing these emergency maintenance periods aren't game system problems, they're infrastructure problems which aren't popping up prior to launch because the system can't be stressed prior to allowing thousands of players in.
Even so, you missed my point. My point was simply that this is something that's out of your control, and there really is nothing to be gained by being outraged over it. (Nothing but undue stress on yourself, that is.)
Just curious, what are you running that is as "hungry and as complicated as an MMO?"

But enough of this silliness.. Lol.. Servers back up! Time to play!

Wrong, and wrong again.
That technology has been here for a while, and Zenimax might have used it among the first for MMO that is, but definitely they aren't the only one who's been using it.
I could list a couple of games and their downtimes, but I'm just gonna mention Guild Wars 2, as it is the most similar game to ESO. They are both MMOs, and the both operate on a 'Megaserver'. Difference is GW2 launched using standard servers or shards, and then transitioned to megaserver in april 2014, and yeah, they virtually have no downtime. Last downtime was on August 23rd, and before that in february. Downtimes are so rare you can expect some cash shop goodies in your mail.
I only hope ESO will improve in that regard and these day-long maintenances will be thing of the past.
For those interested in behind the scenes magic GW2 does, I recommend this:

If the lack of downtime is the most important aspect of your MMO gaming, then I'd suggest you go play GW2 then.
This game requires more downtime, for whatever reason (it's irrelevant), so we can rant and rave about the downtime, or we can just be a bit more patient, and enjoy our game of choice. Up to you really.
