Using your name for your characters name?

For my alter and bosmer I just make up some name and translate it into sindarin or quenya as the elder scrolls games have adapted a lot of Tolkien's ideas of elves. I see others do the same and actually even use proper grammar. I don't really bother with perfect grammar, so I come up with names like Gilithron, Hirduath or Berenhir.

Bretons get Breton/Old French names. Imperials Roman names, Khajiits a name that somehow fits their naming scheme.

I have toons with fun names like Dies-All-Day, (Argonian sap tank) and Mending. The latter is a Templar and still needs Major as PvP Rank to complete the "build"

Thanks everyone for your input, while I'm bad at coming up with good lore friendly names, I do get the point that when playing in a fantasy world, you want a fantasy name, and you are who you are in real life, and your characters are, well your characters... I'll make a little effort for my future characters!

I tend to use lore friendly names however, 4 of my characters are not named in such a manner. Katame no Shinigami is One-Eyed Grim Reaper, Weiß Regen is White Rain, Kaltfeuersturm is Cold Fire Storm and Azrael Krieg is just because I needed a toon named after my account. The rest are lore friendly with the latest being Arkming the Owl because I've started running around in an owl mask and using the commander personality to creep people out.

As a roleplayer I tend to shy away from making characters named after me. However, there was one case where I made a character intended as a joke character that was supposed to be myself thrown into Tamriel, a character that I liked too much to get rid of, so he stays!

I use some really non lorey names, and the fact it pisses some people off makes me warm inside.

I think of my name as a public service announcement rather than something people can refer to me by.

Hence I have names like:

• Compulsive Liar
• Ethically Challenged
• Probably AFK
• Easily Amused

I feel this aids with communication much more accurately than Janet Lightear or Rufus the Ferocious (although that second ones actually pretty good). It's also a kind of self-fulling roleplaying name. Compulsive Liar has been particularly confusing for people who run the RPG line.

Are you roleplaying a hyperintelligent hegemonic machine swarm from the far side of the galaxy that has come to earth to document the flora and fauna but accidently mistakes the characters in computer games as the dominant form of life on the planet, so jacks itself into Elder Scrolls Online and generates a toon with a predictably childish generic name for an Orc, like Oghur Hatemachine, to avoid suspicion while it goes around it's business of recording our day to day lives and passing this back to it's home swarm as part of a giant multi-system entertainment network?

I tried to roleplay a fish in this game but it was difficult because when I swam out to sea I kept dying so I had to retire "Thomas the Fish". Although in retrospect I should have got a change name token and tried "Thomas the Suicidal Fish" ... not sure that fits in the character limit though. Never give up!


(p.s. - I note in your signature it says "My build? Improvise, overcome and adapt!" ... I was wondering if you're really approaching that in the correct order of action?)

On PC I have seen every variation Drizzt Do'Urden possible. Damn lot of DnD players out there

I pretty much smash my keyboard until I find something that looks cool but not fake. Or, two of my characters are souped-up stylizations of my pets' names. But I would never use my actual name. I RP to get out of myself.

Santie has many apprentices yes. This one she thinks they have all been most appropriately named.

Rosiebelle - Orc - named for a dwarf this one knew well in a place called Middle Earth.

Sherlock Gro Bones - Orc - considers himself a gentleman. Possible ancestor of Lord Rugdumph. Amateur sleuth - not a good one.

Skybright - Khajiit - named from a book

Luckee - Khajiit - disturbingly law abiding and honest - as far as anyone they know ...

Nommie - Bosmer - likes eating 'things'.

Hodorf - Nord - None too bright and named after another dwarf from Middle Earth. Mostly only says his own name.

Wenxue - Redguard - Named after others of her name who have travelled in Tamriel before.

Azizom - Breton - named for the lyrics of a song.

Santie of course she uses her own name! Otherwise how would this one know who she was?

Names can be specifically crafter based upon theological, spiritual, social and economical preferences. Don't listen to random name givers, names are very important, they ,must define your personality, service is free, 1 theme song complimentary.

Don't use my real name, because it's a boring and plain... if I can name my character John Smith or Sparkletoes Stabseverything, look for Sparkles coming to a server near you. Despite my best efforts, most of my characters have vaguely lore-friendly names; most ridiculous names get deleted when I get bored of them.

My Stormcrow-characters: Named after the song "Stormcrow" by Cain's Offering.
Draconian Love: Named after the song by Avantasia.
Nocturnal Rights: A band I'm listening to is called "Nocturnal Rites". So the "Nocturnal" part is from there. The "Rights" comes from an inside-joke.
Suicidal Sorc: Because it jumps in - spams Steelnado & dies. Completely useful.
Streak-Lingsjunge: Because it streaks.
Leader-Of-Zergs: Because I lead non-vet TS-groups & I needed a healer for the group :>
Tiny Liebs: Former known as "White Darkness". White Darkness = Name of a song by Nightingale. Tiny Liebs, because my main is a tall High Elf, and Tiny Liebs is a mini-breton.

I wouldn't use my real-name for any of my characters. I usually get inspired by songs or artists anyway.

Drakon Koryn~Oryndiil: Taken from a character in "The Riftwar Saga" by Raymond Fiest, Oryndiil a traditional Dunmer surname.
Corum Mournblade: Corum is a character of Michael Moorecock and Mournblade is the twin to "Stormbringer."
Maid-for-Hire: My Argonian mule. Need I say more except "Lusty-Argonian-Maid" was already taken...hehe
BunnyBane: My big ugly Orc. Soon after launch was a bug that would not let guts drop off critters if you were over level5, so I made this to be my bunny killer for fish bait, and just kept it as a mule.
Fizzban the Fabulous: Comical old wizard from "Dragonlance". (And also the Hero God Paladin).
Fargoth Tasslehoff: Fargoth was the Bosmer "thief" you met first thing in Morrowind. Tasselhoff, the lovable Kender from "Dragonlance".
Celarus Milamber: Celerus was one of the first heads of the Psyjic Order of Mysterious Mages. Milamber is from a character in Fiests "Riftwar Saga."

I only have 1 played character, and my son has another. I picked a name that sounds RP-ish, but I haven't done a lore based choice yet.

However, what other people choose is...their choice. It seems like a trivial thing to get irritated about other people's names. Their choice in what they call their character doesn't seem to have any bearing on their general skill level and enjoyment. Perhaps it shouldn't on yours either.

It was also one of the reason why I felt like putting any efforts into finding a decent lore friendly name might just turn out completely useless since people don't only see my character names but my PSN aswell.. oh well. And yeah, the names I see out there, lmao.

majority of my names are derived from my nickname "Wolf" ... a few are just names i put together to go with a theme or something i like.... Fujin Chidori for example ( stam orc sorc ) is derived from the japanese god of wind and the "Lightning blade " ability used in naruto shippuden anime

I Don't see a problem with using your real name for your characters just not as fun I guess? besides its awkward for me with my psn name and all. Normally I end up making the names rhyme Arisanas, Risana, Tiana I am not very creative at all with names at all...as you can guess <<<<

Not that I used the name here mind you, but someone in the MMO Istaria (formerly Horizons) took great offense at my feline race's name of Dead Cat Walking. He tended to die a lot so it seemed very appropriate to me. Some GM changed it to something inane like, 273984, so I left it that way; so much better in character name eh!?

This was not a roleplay server either; some players have no sense of humor.

Name how you like; you have to live with it, as long as it doesn't violate the TOS.
