I made a post saying I just returned to the game from a hiatus and am at cp 170 and asked what I should be doing for gear, they said do Maelstrom Arena so I just went and did it....every time I beat one it just led to another it took me awhile to realize it must be some kind of joke. I kept getting 150 blue gear and it made me scratch my head why would old crappy gear drop from before and not 160 purple gear. I mean, I walked in with 160 purple I got solo from just running around and crafting. Then it hit me that these guys set me up for a joke.

Well you got me and yes I went through about 5 or 6 of them and spent the better part of an hour in there.

Ok, so could someone please tell me were I should go for better gear, any big quest lines for uber stuff with good lore. I did all the quests I could find but they were all trash quests that just give you silver and little xp and none had any good follow up story quests.

Any help would be appreciated.

veteran maelstrom gives the best weapons in game but dlc dungeons have nice armor set drops. Some people go with crafted gear sets as well. Trials has good sets as well but that is later down the road

Well how do I get to veteran, it just kept giving me one after the other and the reward was old gear from level 150

You won't really get gear from quest lines, and the gear you get from maelstrom is pretty meh at best (excluding the weapons). Your best bet is to buy it from guild traders, or go farm some dungeons/trials with friends/guildies. If PVE is your thing, quite a few people still run TBS (Twice Born Star), so a crafted set is still an option.

The best-in-slot weapons for most builds come from veteran Maelstrom Arena. I believe that's why somebody suggested it. The best-in-slot jewelry for most builds comes from veteran Trials (check out Vicious Ophidian 3 piece). However, most min/maxed builds continue to be crafted: twice-born star, julianos, and hundings rage.

If you want to try out unique builds, check out the PTS patch notes for update 12, coming on Oct. 5th (tomorrow) for PC, to see some of the new sets. They're redesigning the game so that it's easy to know where to go to farm specific sets. Some are bind-on equip, like the overland sets. Some are bind-on pickup, like the dungeon sets.

Best advice is to stop exposing yourself to forum trolls and check guides on what class & role you play, and also if you want play PVE or PVP ofcourse. There are a bunch of written guides as well as video guides on the latest content and the current best setups (there already are for most classes and roles for One tamriel, on the PTS). Also most of the builds are going to consist partially of gear which is crafted or BOE so buyable, while other parts can drop from trials/Vet maelstrom arena, but you can find sufficient substitutes for those before you get them).

Dungeons and PUG/guild groups for regular non-vet trials are your best bet if you are going for PVE at the start and at a lower light level.

You have to set the dungeon mode to Veteran from the group menu, like you would do for group dungeons

Be aware, if you're CP 170 and been gone for a long while, you're gonna have a bad time.

So pretty much the game is steal everyday and then just buy really good gear.....that doesn't sound to exciting.

So what have the developers been doing all this time?

there are nine different arenas to beat before a shot at the weapon if you are on hard mode

You need to open your group window and switch group mode from normal to vet. THEN go to the arena.

Also, there's 9. It does eventually end. Portals lead to the next arena.

There are 9 stages in Maelstrom, it seems like it goes on forever but it does end I promise. However the other posts here saying that the only good gear comes from the final chest on veteran mode are correct. And before you rush back there, know that the veteran mode is about 10x harder than the normal one.

When you're outside of Maelstrom Arena you need to go to your group screen and change the dungeon mode from normal to veteran. Then when you enter Maelstrom Arena it will be on vet mode. Be warned: vet mode is vastly vastly increased difficulty compared to normal mode, and in order to get a Maelstrom weapon you have to complete all of the arenas (there are 9 different ones IIRC). You get a chest after each arena that has gear, but the Maelstrom weapons people are talking about as being best in slot only come after the final arena.

This site is up to date with the upcoming patch. It has sets, their bonuses, what pieces they are dropped in (armor, weapons and/or jewelry) and where they can be found. Just keep in mind some of these aren't out yet.

vMA is where you can get some of the best weapons in the game but you're probably not ready for that. nMA is what you were doing.

It ends, it has 9 stages and you get a chest at the end of each stage. But you only get anything worthwhile after beating all 9 stages and only if you ran the veteran version.

To switch to veteran, leave the arena completely (go to another zone), open your group menu, click on the little veteran shield icon next to dungeon difficulty, then go back to the arena.
It will say veteran on the quest you pick up before stage 1, if not, you didn't switch difficulty correctly.

as it stands just wait until they update with One Tamriel (on PC 5th October) then you will be able to "pick and choose" the sets you would like to try and yes at CP160 by going to the specific zone where the set you want drops and then farm it by doing World Bosses, Public Dungeons, Delves and Dolmens...and loads of new Undaunted sets from the 4-man group dungeons

Yeah basically. If you don't know the mechanics, vet mode will be impossible. Learn the mechanics on non-vet, but expect a massive increase in difficulty for vet.

Yeah like the others say no one is on a wind up with you, someone gave an honest answer if a little specific. Arguably the best weapon in the game is a perfect Maelstrom weopon from the last boss of veteran.

Normal Maelstorm is not a waste of time. It's good XP. And it's not endless,its 9 stages of 3-5ish rounds. Each stage has a flavour with mini bosses then a big boss. If you are DPS its a great place to practice your build / rotation.

If you are after gear you either want to farm drop sets (lots of options / locations look them up) or buy them from traders, or use crafted gear and plan your build. There is no real 'Best' as it depends on what you are doing, PvE. PvP etc etc

In terms of leveling / quest XP do the main questline (prophet) and your alliance questline then the other alliances for better quest XP and skill points.

But everything is about to change with one tamriel

OP. Everything is changing tomorrow. There will be a lot of new gear to farm from a variety of places. You won't beat Vet Maelstrom before then, so if you are looking to get CP160 gear, check out what is being added in the update.

That is a good question, i didn't actually run normal on the PTS so i don't know. I sure hope it'll at least scale to CP160.

Well thank you, gotta say since I have been back I have chuckled a bit but lots of confusion. I have to say I still am not sure of the direction of the game, at first when it launched it was about lore, then it seemed to focus on PVP now we just have an endless arena that has no real story just made to take up time it feels like....I could be wrong.

That is a good question, i didn't actually run normal on the PTS so i don't know. I sure hope it'll at least scale to CP160.

It would make sense... since things like ICP and whatnot are now dropping CP160 (just lower quality than on vet). So I just kind of assumed MA would get the same treatment. lol

Sounds like they want to try to make it time consuming. Could be they don't have a lot of developers in that case you need to make time consuming events or people leave by time they get fresh content out....so it makes sense.
