This is precisely why I think gear (nor power) should be a part of rewards in an MMO, or should be so in a limited variety. The game itself should be fun. When MMO's become too much about reward it seems every time that skill dies, grind increases, and balance goes out the window. I like gear sets, but I personally think they should ALL be craftable, every single one. Additionally, skill really should be the dominant and deciding factor (along with I suppose latency, nothing can be done about that really).
