is it worth becoming a master crafter. Is it worth getting all 6 of the crafting skill lines max and researching a ton just so you can be self efficient ( craft and make your own stuff. Not having to buy as much) or is it just easier and take less time to get gold and just pay for everything you need?

well, I like it  Makes sure I can get what I need, when I need it.. Also nets you a good bit of gold from surveys and writs :) The better you get, the higher the chance of making some gold on orders too

I think so. Wood / Metal / Cloth are easy too, I got to L50 purely deconning mob trash. Sure you need that research sorting though.

It also means you can do daily writs top tier, 20k XP, 4K Gold and a chance at Tempers in the container but also via the Surveys ans hirlings (tho rare to get golds)

    Short answer: yes!

    Why? read below:
    • Alchemy is almost demanded for endgame pve, due to potion effect duration passive.
    • Provisioning is good for xp potion boost duration (they're expensive), and in general beneficial because you don't have to eat buff food and drinks that often.
    • Enchanting/BS/WW/Clothier = good for economy, as you will spend much less time buying/asking friends and guildies to make you stuff. When you create new chars, you can craft them new gear yourself instead of paying 10k a piece for lvl 3 green training gear. You can also deconstruct cp160 glyphs for runes, and refine materials of all levels to obtain gold materials required for upgrading items, and if you spend skillpoints then you only need to spend 8 gold materials instead of 12 to upgrade something from purple to gold.

Depends what you like I guess. I'm a master crafter because it's fun to be able to do everything yourself. I'm sure you could farm gold and buy the stuff for the time it takes go be a crafter if you want to, that might even be more efficient, but that's hardly a reason to take that path for me since i like it :)

You might as well. Things like alchemy, and provisioning do come in handy at end game. And probably would have helped me early on if I had used them from the beginning. Alchemy levels very quickly but you have to gather plants. Provisioning is not to tough just get a large stock of matts. Enchanting is slow, faster if you have someone to work with you.

The blacksmith, clothier, and wood working really just take time. But are easy, just deconstruct everything you find. Researching traits again takes time so you may as well do it as you level.

You need to think long term as these things take time to level up and are easier to do now as you level up in the beginning of the game. Plus being a master crafter means you don't have to wait for someone else to take time to do it for you. Also it doesn't hurt to level all 3 armor types, or other weapon skills, and really anything else as you go.

Leveling more skills and abilities as you work you way to level 50 and CP160, simply gives you more to work with once you get to endgame.

My wife and I don't like to have to ask others for things we can do ourselves so we split the crafts evenly. We both completed all the research items so with the exception of knowing every style, she can make most of what I can. I recently took over the Enchanting piece of it as I include those with things I sell so it makes it easier on us.

The bottom line is, it depends on if your a DYI kind of person or not. If you don't mind asking/paying for help from others then no need to work them up. You can research things as that's easy to keep going but you can let someone else spend a ton of gold on all the motifs. They do cost a lot to acquire and with Zos adding in an average of 3 new styles per DLC, it's a huge gold sink.

For me, it's well worth it to be able to craft anything I want in any style/trait/set/quality.

For me, yes it's worth it even if only to be self sufficient and not having to rely on someone else being online and available when I want new stuff crafted.

In fact, that was the one reason why I craft :) certainly not for profit (since everyone usually expects people to craft for free if the materials are provided).

Edit to add: I have 12 characters and although only one has done reseach on items, and is the only "true" crafter with all provisioning recipies learnt, all of them have the 6 crafting skills at 50: I now have an army of hirelings sending useful things twice a day, definetively worth it for me.

If you plan on playing the game for any length of time, this is trivial to accomplish. I have 9 traits on 2 toons and am 6/6 lvl 50 on crafting on 6 toons. Just decon what you find and it will happen without realizing it. As for research, you literally just press a button and wait. The only remotely difficult part is gathering up enough nirncrux.

If you want to be self sufficient, then its worth it. If you have any notion that it is somehow profitable, you will be disappointed. Everyone and their mom is a 9 trait crafter.

But yeah, the short answer is that it's totally worth it. It might make more sense to split the crafts between a couple of characters though, because otherwise you'll be pretty tight on skill points until you've collected pretty much all of the skill points and sky shards available in the game.

If you're going to split the crafts up, I'd suggest doing all of your equipment crafting on 1 character (a higher level character - ideally max level, because you'll need a lot of skill points for them) so that you only need to learn any motifs that you want to know once. Then if you like you can have each of the consumable crafting skills on a different character, or put them all on one.

I think it is worth it. My first character did it, was able to make everything all of my alts needed - armour, food, potions, enchanting runes, etc., and is currently researching the 9th trait on his final pieces.

Leveling your characters in crafting is not hard if you are questing with them, your higher characters who have finished leveling put anything they find in the bank and your alts still in training can then deconstruct them.

I now have 5 characters at level 50 in all 6 crafts with my 6th character only having to complete Enchanting - at level 40 now. I even have a second character researching his 8th trait on everything, not for any particular reason other than I felt like it. Could even start trait research on others yet...

    i forgot to include:
DONT TELL ANYONE THAT YOU CAN CRAFT UNLESS YOU INTEND TO TAKE GOLD FOR IT!

Crafters like me who refuse gold from friends and guildies are overburdened -.-
    • people never mail exact amount of materials (problematic with crafting bag that auto-stacks everything) and ask for excess materials to be returned.
    • people will often mail you the wrong materials.
    • people will often order 4-5 different styles on different items.
    • people whisper you the description of level and trait, instead of writing it with the mail - because they think you can remember everything when you relog to your crafter (chat gets wiped out).
    • low levels will vendor the crafted goods once they see a better quality random ornate loot.
    • people often dislike the style and ask for a re-craft.
    • low levels will send you 7 ingots to craft them a full set of gear.
    • low levels will beg you to craft them the newest shiniest style, where the style material cost 3k+ each.
    • people ask you to go buy the materials because they can't be arsed themselves.

I'm too sleepy to remember the rest of the list ..

@Cryptical what @Wolfhammer says is true, I have maxed out all crafts and researched all 9 traits, yet I sometimes go and ask friends or pay a crafter to make me stuff, because it's boring and I'm not always willing to waste time on it.

I also often buy potions, xp potions and food from guildtraders. I even buy low level food buffs and put them in the guildbank, so my guildies won't ask me to craft that stuff for them lol

For the passives and quality improvement alone, yes. If you ever plan on getting gold gear, you will want to be able to improve the gear yourself. Some other good answers here already, but other passives such as increasing the duration of potions and extending the time food lasts. For enchanting, meh... Just comes in handy, but not essential if you want to beg others to make your glyphs. The real trades in this game are research trait sets and motifs. Leveling the crafts is merely something everyone should do for their own convenience. The hardest to level, enchanting, is also the least essential. The other 5 can be done easily.

Cloth, wood, smith: Just decon everything.
Alchemy: Buy a stack of the cheapest regents such as fleshy larva or spiders eggs. Find something it mixes with, and just create worthless potions. When you are able to use the higher level water, do it. The solvent is what gives more xp, not the third plant or number of potions.
Cooking: Another easy one where you just buy cheap ingredients for a cheap recipe, and then make the highest level you can as the higher levels give more xp. Also, the color does give more xp as well, so if you can make blue, it's better than green.
And for enchanting: Buy a stack of Denata and a stack of cp150 potency (much cheaper than cp160), and find someone willing to make you 200 glyphs for decon. Should get you almost to the top. :P

Purple or blue recipes do not grant greater inspiration than green recipes, but often use more rare/expensive ingredients. So focus on green recipes to save ingredients unless you're crafting for your own usage. What matters to the amount of inspiration is the food/drink's level, and only that: a chart here shows how much inspiration to expect.

Other than that, your post had good advice @Bryanonymous .
