[Noob question] What are Trails and how they differ from instance duengons

So Actully I have two questions

1-The first which is above in the title thread
2-what are the duengon types and how they differ from one another

    You mean Trials?

    Well you need 12 people to finish them.
    Bosses are stronger etc. And there is better loot.
    And there are only 4 trials in game.

    Dungeon Types
    • Delves (Non-instanced) - These look like a little torch on your map. These are of fixed level depending on the level of the zone - they are scaled to be doable solo. All delves contain a boss and a skyshard. 7 per zone, IIRC.
    • Public Dungeons (Non-instanced) - These look like little rocky doorways. Again, levelled based on the zone. Balanced for a small group, but they can be entered (and completed, if your character is somewhat decent) solo fairly simply. Contain multiple bosses including a group event, which gives a skill point for completion. Also contains a skyshard. 1 per zone.
    • Dungeons - (Instanced) - These are four man group dungeons, they are generally scaled to CP160, and non CP160 characters will be scaled up. I'm not sure if these can still be scaled down to group leader? All dungeons have normal modes, many have veteran modes. They're balanced for a four man group (typically 2xDPS, 1xTank, 1xHealer), doable with smaller groups of competent players. Dungeons are significantly harder than the previous types, containing multiple bosses, better loot and a skill-point quest. Undaunted pledges require the completion of a specific dungeon; a further criterion must be fulfilled in veteran dungeons to obtain the gold key reward. 1 per zone.
    • Craglorn Group Delves - (can't remember...) - Unique to the Craglorn zone, these look like a Delve torch with a '+' by it. These are harder than typical delves and are balanced around a small group.
    • Trials - (Instanced) - Symbol looks like some kind of demonic doorway. Significantly harder instanced content, scaled around a 12-man group. Normal and veteran modes are available for some (more coming next patch). Normal mode is somewhat doable by a decent group - veteran and 'hard mode' requires a more competent group, versed in the art of running trials. Trials have associated leaderboards that give rewards on a weekly basis.
    • Other - (Instanced) - Maelstrom Arena in Wrothgar has a Trial-like symbol on the map. This is a single-player 'arena' with both normal and veteran modes, it scales to your level. Dragonstar Arena is a four-man arena, with multiple stages, that is getting updated to CP160 next patch. I don't remember what it looks like on the map - maybe like a crumbling tower? Located in north-west Craglorn, has both normal and veteran modes

    Trials are timed 12 man leader board dungeons. The faster you run it and the less deaths there are during the run the better your score. There is a weekly trial and if you get on the leader board you will also receive a mail at the end of the week with a gold set piece in it.

    I can compare trials and dungeons in this way - in group dungeons you just push forward killing everything on your path the sooner the better, you can do it with 3 dps and healer without tank too; when in trial you need to use proper tactic, skills and have enough people and roles (proper number of tanks, healers and dps, group of 12 players), otherwise you die quickly and run is painful.

    Our current list of trials:
    • Aetherian Archives (12 mans dungeon)
    • Hel Ra Citadel (12 mans dungeon)
    • Sanctum of Ophidia (12 mans dungeon, exists in normal and veteran version, this trial scales to leaders level - only veteran version cp160 counts toward leaderboards)
    • Dragonstar Arena (4 mans dungeon, exists in normal and veteran version - only veteran version cp140 counts toward leaderboards)
    • Maelstrom Arena (1 mans dungeon, exists in normal and veteran version, this trial is in DLC area and you can get battlescaled if you are below cp160 - only veteran version cp160 counts toward leaderboards)
    • Maw of Lorkhaj (12 mans dungeon, exists in normal and veteran version, this trial scales to leaders level - only veteran version cp160 counts toward leaderboards)
    We will hopefully soon get normal version of Aetherian Archives and Hel Ra Citadel.

    Despite that Sanctum of Ophidia is downscaleable to below level 50, it is not possible for anyone between level 1-49 to enter it, because it is located in Craglorn - a level 50+ only place. this part was wrong :p as proven below this post.

    Ah oki, thanks for explaining that, I actually didn't knew. I thought the dungeon could be downscaled, but not that the dungeon could be accessible by non vets O.o

    I've always wanted to try trials, would it best to start off with The cp140 ones to get used to 12 man content then work to the cp160 ones?

    They're instanced, as I recall. But it's been nearly two years since I was in one.

    For dungeons, if you queue through the in-game dungeon finder, it will be scaled to CP160.
    However, if you form your own group, it will be scaled up to the group leader's level. If you're of a higher level than the group leader, you will not be scaled down. It makes for a really easy cheese method of simply completing dungeons for the quest and pledges, as you can group up with a low-leveled friend, make him/her leader, and just decimate the entire dungeon.

    hmm i also had to correct my own post, vDSA is cp140 scaled and not cp160. Next patch we will get it scaled to cp160 though <3
