Restoration Staff pet peeve

EternalEther
I recently started healing some random dungeons and the channel on the resto staff heavy attack has always annoyed me. An enemy at 1% health does the same damage as an enemy with 100% health, so when picking targets for a heavy attack it seems logical to help my groupmates by picking off low health targets. But of course if you pick a target with too low health, it dies before the channel is complete and you get no magicka. Does this annoy anyone else? I'd rather not attack a high health target and risk aggroing it. If it still has high health, then few people have attacked it and I'm more likely to attract it myself.

I think it'd be nice to have a mechanic, perhaps a passive skill, that lets you recoup magicka proportional to what a heavy attack returns, if an enemy dies while your channeling a resto heavy attack. So if it dies halfway through your channel, you'd get half the magicka from a heavy attack back.

I know it's a minor thing, but it really bugs me.

Thoughts?

You're a healer, so if you aggro a mob, you really shouldn't be worried about dying to it, unless it's a vICP Flesh Atronach or something with a 1-shot mechanic.

Heavy attack that full health mob, and if he doesn't like that, tell him there's more where that came from and kill it.

As a healer, I pull massive groups of mobs and AOE them down without worrying about heath for me or my group., because of Healing Springs + Annulment + Ritual of Retribution. Of course, sometimes it doesn't end well (see that massive group of Dwemer machines before the final boss in vet Darkshade Caverns) but you shouldn't be worried about the mobs that come to attack you, and one way or another, you're going to kill them, so just get it over with.

I think the point the OP is trying to make is that you should get magicka back from your heavy attack if the mob dies before the channel completes.

    To this, I agree.

If you're worried about aggro then get a tank that can do its job. Tanks pull aggro so you have no worries with one around.

I actually disagree. For example on my dps my heavy attacks have a wind up time. Should we get stamina back if something dies during the wind up?

As a healer as well i agree tgis can be annoying, but it does seem to be the same as most the other weapons. It just acts slightly different.

That's true they are similar, however, on a theoretical mob with one hp, as long as no on else kills it, you can wind up and unleash your heavy and get back stamina. With the resto staff (or lightning staff) you kill it before it gets you anything.

I know it's practically a non-issue but it still irks me.

If you're worried about aggro then get a tank that can do its job. Tanks pull aggro so you have no worries with one around.

It's honestly not even about the aggro, despite my mention of it. It's more about the waste of a channel and/or the counterintuition of not picking off low health targets.

    Oh well. I'll deal.

(Of course I can't actually play the game atm since my screen is all black...)

With the [lightning] staff you kill it before it gets you anything.

For Destruction Staves, you get the magicka refund through a passive on kills though. So you would get magicka return on Lighting Staff.

Of course, it's not that way with Resto Staves.

Healing Wards need to go on group members only. I'm tired of scrubs stealing my wards.

I forgot about that passive. But that magicka return is on top of what you'd get from a heavy attack. So you would get some magicka back, from the passive, but not the full amount since the heavy attack was interrupted.
