"Born Again Templar" - Stamina Templar Trials Tank (updated for db)

Welcome to the "Born Again Templar" tank build, this is a mini guide/build outline for Stamina Templar tanking in Trials. this is meant to be a guild for group play, end game, focusing on trials, but can easily be used in pugs, and daily pledges, and still be extremely effective. Please feel free to ask any questions or give comments.

Intro:

Some Time ago i posted up looking for ideas on what to do with my v16 Nord Templar, i knew i wanted to tank, i thought i wanted to heal. I kept thinking and thinking about what i wanted to do, My poor nord started out as a stam dps, then got switched to a magicka tank, then again switched to complete magicka heals, then he sat. and sat. and sat. and i continued to play my nightblade, and my sorcerer, and the templar sat some more. Finally i got determined to make something out of him, i tossed it with some people in game and decided to turn the nord into a Trials Tank! my first thought was to return to magicka based tanking so i could offer some group synergy with some extra HOT's like ritual. the more i thought about it the less it made sense, so i started thinking about what i could do with a stamina build. i did some google-ing, some foundry-ing, i even browsed in the officials a little. There is almost no information on stamina templar tanking, sure there are some ideas and people asking how to do it, and others respond with my dk runs this so you should run this etc, there were a couple outdated builds, but nothing remotely current for a stamina templar tank that could hold its own in trials and do it well. This build has completed all endgame content with the exception of VmoL (it is proving itself there as well), its very strong in the new vSO as a main tank as well, so without boring people with a read, here is my rendition of how to do it:

Race:

Nord for me, imperial great too, it can literally be done on any race though.

Champion Points/Armor:

For armor you can see i chose 5x tavas, 5x footman, 2x bloodspawn, the reasoning behind this is pretty simple, ulti gen, i use shuffle for the dodge chance to proc tava's, in between dodges, bloodspawn can proc, granting even more ulti, and on top of that throw in heroic slash, the healing from repentance, and my light and heavy attacks, and you have serious ulti gen, all about dat war horn, in vmol/vso i use ritual of retribution quite a bit, and that ticks it even more. again the idea behind this build is very simple, as much war horn as possbile, block reduction, and just dont be a dk :P

Stats:

Unbuffed:

Skills:

This is the loadout im currently using for Vet Maw of Lorkhaj, new Vet So, and everywhere else, and it works stellar. I do change some skills around if im trying to add a little dps, like slotting jabs on the back bar in place of assault. the idea behind the stamina templar tank that i have is to add to group dps and be mostly self sufficient on resources. i pretty much never run dry of resources, and my regen numbers for magicka and stamina are below 1k. I accomplish this by being the only person in group that runs Repentance, i use every single add around me for regen during aoe pulls, for single target fights i chug cheap stam pots (because tri pots are for p*ssies. just kidding they are just not needed for this build) whenever they are up and only need an occasional shard.

Bar 1- Structured Entropy, Ransack, Restoring Focus, Heroic Slash, Shuffle, ULT-Aggressive Horn

Bar 2- Structured Entropy, Inner Beast, Shielded Assault, Power of the Light, Repentance, ULT-Solar Prison/War Horn

Rotation is very simple:

Warhorn when you are supposed to and Nova only if your group absolutely needs a backup mitigation.

Front bar (single target) - run in, taunt, restoring focus, power of the light, structured entropy, repeat as things need reapplied. watch your PotL tick for 20k+, its not uncommon for me to do well over 5k dps if i remember to keep PotL up all the time while simply taunting, keeping heroic slash up, and medium attacking. Keep shuffle, medium attacks, and heroic slash going all the time, if there are adds, swap bars when appropriate and use repentance.

Back bar (swapping for aoe) - for aoe i charge the closest add, taunt the importants, using repentance as things die. Block when you need to, if your stationary with a big add(s) (ie:banners in vMOL) i tend to stay on bar one, and only swap to use repentance. if your wanting to have fun, i routinely use assault to fly around the room and round up all the baddies if im bored instead of letting them come to me.

NEED MORE HEALS? for more suitability (should never need to do this in trials), i would slot blazing shield and vigor on the back bar and replace assault and PotL. i have never needed to do this, tbh, my way of handling it is to use atro stone, max hp/mp food and put ritual of retribution and bol on the back bar, with ritual, repentance, and the occasional bol, i have healed every undaunted pledge, AS A STAM TANK. i would not recommend it that you use this as a heal tank, its not strong, and requires everyone in your group to know EVERY mechanic in the fights, but it can be done if you know templar tanking well.

Additional Info:

This build can be used in any situation that requires a tank, from daily pugs/guild runs, to trials, and its extremely effective. if your looking for a build to swap to if you need to dps i recommend check out This <- (click for build) as its what i use when i need to swap to dps for any reason on my templar.

Good write up, but basically a current Tava build on a Templar. Post should probably be "Tavas Tank" like the rest. Not gonna lie, new meta tanking is boring and has almost completely turned me away.

if your feeling bored with my write up and have nothing constructive to say other than its nothing new and i should rename it (aside from being a stam based templar tank cause there are a ton of those) you could try out my old build:

run tbs, dreugh king, and maw of infernal , s&b front bar, dw back bar, and go offensive. but that would not be conducive to the point of the build, which is trials

yes its a tava build, on a templar, thats whats used atm in trials, the group is dependent on the tanks and healers for buffs, but templars bring their own style and abilities to the table, so its not just like the rest, its a variation of the rest. on a class that is not commonly seen in trials or tanking for that matter. your signature would indicate that you tank a sorc, so im sure you get questions on how you do it and why, or why its what you stick with instead of going dk. alot of usefull skills that can be thrown into the mix that help in a trials setting that other classes do not bring to the table, especially in vmol and vSO where dual tanking is very common.

i get questions in game all the time about how to tank on a templar, alot more goes into it than simply dawning the meta armor and getting war horn.

i mean you basically just said dont post any builds if someone did it on another class in the same armor. or just name them all the same thing.

Oh dude don't get so upset about what I said, I actually complimented your write up. Trials tanking meta is boring but yeah that's irrelevant, I think it could be a lot more in depth, the amount of people who run warhorn, Tavas I don't think is necessary in the rotation so you could run a more supportive 5 piece. Anyways, how is your sustain on this build with no adds to repent?

i was not upset in the least, simply confused at your point. sustain during true single target fights is a non-issue, taking a cheap stam pot on CD and the occasional shard makes it cake even with the low regen, its all about those sword weaves. the only time you really need repentance is somewhere like vmol or vso where there are quite a few large baddies beating on you at the same time, even then its not manditory to run if you get the occasional shard.

as for adding in other sets, on top of tava;s there are other 5 piece jewelry sets i have been looking at, namely alkosh. and running 5 alkosh/5tava/2bloodspawn. but there isnt a whole lot that a well oiled trials group actually needs that armor offers. suggestions?
