Hey world.
I ran some numbers and would like some peer-review on this, see what you think of this.
I'm running DK tank and looking to get some serious spell and physical resistance. I know most want the 3 armour types Undaunted stuff, but here are my numbers anyway.

All my information is retrieved by various pages at elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com
As a tank, I assume 7 armour pieces, with a shield, so a total of 8 pieces.
My assumptions:
  • Everything is made in legendary quality.
  • 1 Armour = 1 Physical Resistance + 1 Spell resistance.
  • Numbers are rounded up and down by conventional mathematical rules.
It is worth noting that Reinforced (16%) and Infused (20%) gives a bonus of that armour piece. In other words, I can calculate the total armour value, and multiply by 16% or 20%.
Divines (7,5%) and Nirnhoned (301 flat) gives values from each piece and needs to be multiplied by the number of armour pieces (8).

  • Reinforced:
Full Rubedite Heavy Armour with shield gives 16617 Armour.
Full Rub. Heavy w/ shield 8 reinforced traits = 16617 armour * 1,16 = 19276 Armour.
Total increase of armour = 19276 - 16617 = 2659
  • Nirnhoned
301 Spell+phys resist per piece (301 armour)
301 Armour * 8= 2408 Armour.
  • Infused
Glyphs first:
Glyph scaling percentages
Head, Chest, Legs, Shield: 100%
Waist, Feet, Hands, Shoulder: 40%
Any glyph gives 868 stat
Total = 868 * 4 + 868 * 0,4 * 4 = 3472 + 1389 = 4861 (inb4 bad internet math #lamefacebookmath :-)
4861 stat * 1,2 = 5833 stat
5833 - 4861 = 972 stat
  • Mundos Stone
Here, I can choose one, or go with the twice-told legend set. This is merely for comparison.
Lady/Lover = 1280 resistance
Mage/Tower/Lord= 1280 stat
Divine full set % = 7,5% * 8 = 60%
Full set resist/stat = 1280 * 1,6 = 2048
Total increase of stat = 2048 - 1280 = 768

To summarize:
With full heavy armour and a shield, I have 8 armour pieces.
With Reinforced I get a total of 2659 increased armour.
With Nirnhoned I get a total of 2408 increased armour.
With Infused I get a total of 972 increased stat.
With Mundos stones I get 768 increased armour or stats.

Discussion:
At most times, this is a matter of prefereance, and some want stats, some want resistances.
I would appreciate feedback on the math, and the proving that Infused or Reinforced being the superior choices.
And I'm well aware of that resistances cap at 32k or so.

I find it is best to run about 20k each resistance to leave room for CP, internal and external buffs, racial passives (#nordlife) etcetera and to fan out attributes to functionality over just being a meat bag for punching. Just because you can jam the cap does not mean you should and every tank is different.
I didn't choose tank life, tank life chose me.

You miscalculated how beneficial infused is. I didn't check your math on it...but you picked the wrong result.

Since infused is only the 20% increase and not the total increase of stats that enchants give you, its only worth a maximum of 972 increase to your resources.

As far as traits go, you are right in that preference is a big reason as to why to pick your traits, but Sturdy is also a competitive armor trait. Ideally, I'd run with about 3-4 sturdy, reinforced chest and shield, and then whatever else.

Yes, I found the mistake. If I only could edit the original post.

I don't understand. Infused gives 20% increase on the given enchantment. Because it gives 20% on all the enchantments you have, I can assume it gives 20% to the total amount I can obtain on 8 pieces. The numbers when using a legendary glyph is right, and the percentages are correct, and so the infused should be right too? No?

I found the mistake. Thank you.
    Infused gives 5833 - 4861 = 972
In other words, 972 increased stat.

    Ok, let's compare sturdy too.
    Blocking cost 2160
While we do have a lot of other passives reducing the cost, let's assume this number.
One trait reduce the cost by 4%.
Given 8 pieces, we can reduce the cost by 32%
    2160 * 1 - 0,32 = 1469
    Reduction of: 2160 - 1469 = 691
A full set of sturdy gives 691 cheaper blocking. This is far lower than the possible 972 stat from infused.

Getting a bonus of 972 max stamina is certainly not better than reducing block cost by 691, which seems to be what you're implying. If you block just two attacks in succession (i.e. block for 1 second; with an attack every 0.5 s) then sturdy has saved you 1,382 stamina, already surpassing the bonus from infused.

    EDIT:
Oh, with the reinforced vs. nirnhoned thing - the absolute best is to mix and match based on the base armour of the gear - as reinforced is a percentage vs the flat from NH, hence for pieces with base armour > 1,881, reinforced's +16% will outdo NH's + 301 resist.

By the title at the very top, below your forum name. There's a 5 point star that lets you bookmark the thread and next to that is a gear, click that gear.

Someone else has a spreadsheet chart on Nirnhoned vs Reinforced. The best pieces to use Reinforced are Shields, Heavy Chest, Heavy Leggings, Heavy Helm, Heavy Shoulders, Heavy Boots, and Medium Chest; I believe, with everything else Nirnhoned. I'll have to try to find that spreadsheet, I don't have it bookmarked as I probably should.

CP 160 with Legendary Cuirass, Helm, Pauldrons and Epic Girdle, Gauntlets, Greaves and Sabatons (all Reinforced) without a Shield grants 19452 Armor. Adding an Epic Sturdy Shield with Shield Expert passive increases armor to 22462.

I like an infused head, chest, legs, and shield and sturdy hands, waist, feet and shoulders.

Some pieces are going to end up being RNG drop only, so unless you spend weeks grinding (or craft everything) you are going to end up with some random traits.

Trait bonuses are such a small part of the tank build I usually don't chase them on dropped sets. The actual set bonuses are far more important.

    Playing since beta...

Ok, thank you for this information.
Again, this further proves my point:
Do I want a flat Nirnohoned, or a Divines stone I already proved wasn't so great, OR do I want a lot of armour from Reinforced?
    But of course..
I like an infused head, chest, legs, and shield and sturdy hands, waist, feet and shoulders.

It's all in what we like in the end.

I would pick your set/ build and then trait around that to recover whatever it is that you will wind up lacking due to the constraints of your gear, race, and class. Then use that spread sheet as a guide for placing your traits to fill the gaps.

I personally prefer infused because of racial passives and prismatic enchants. My Breton sap tank uses all infused gold and reaches resistance cap with champ points and the lady... Leaving me to use Two five piece sets without resistance buffs on them.
