You're missing out on some good games because of this odd hangup. I understand preferring to play a role that you can best relate to, which is why I prefer games with character creation, but I wouldn't pass up on good games if I could only play the opposite gender. Horizon New Dawn is a good looking upcoming RPG that stars a redhead warrior woman (love redheads alright, alright, alright) and I'm interested in getting a PS4 and picking this up someday.

While I generally agree with you (there are plenty of games with male protags I love, like the early Assassin's Creed games, or Infamous, or, yeah, Legend of Zelda and FFVII)... I'm sorry, but you don't really get how frustrating it is to see your gender be relegated to romantic interest or eye candy again and again and again. Don't call it an "odd hangup," because it is an entirely understandable hangup to get fed up with 90% of gaming media not representing you. The majority of gaming companies not only not cater to us... they don't even recognize us as a legitimate subset of gamers. So it's not odd at all to favor the games that do.

(Though it does seem to be getting better lately, so yay for that :) )

I understand what you're saying and why you would feel that way but the thing that was odd to me about her post was that she really wanted to play a game but avoided it because she couldn't play as a female.

I see your point, but I still have to protest against you calling it "odd." Hate to say it, but it's not. I know plenty of women who feel this way, especially regarding games like AC: Unity, which specifically has four characters to choose from, yet someone in development made the conscious decision not to make any of them female. "For animation reasons" iirc. Because being male is the default state of personhood and all that. :p

Not saying I don't agree with you--some of my favorite games have a male protagonist--just that it's inaccurate to call it "odd." XD
    Living vicariously through my characters.

"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

BlackSparrow you pretty much summed up what I wanted to say. Thank you for understanding.

My post is odd because I avoid purchasing (supporting) games that I feel doesn't try to appeal to female gamers? We do exist. Take Assassins Creed Unity for an example. They were going to add in female models to play as in multiplayer but took it out. Read this guy's quote from the production team: (I can link an article reference if needed)

“It was on our feature list until not too long ago, but it’s a question of focus and production. So we wanted to make sure we had the best experience for the character. A female character means that you have to redo a lot of animation, a lot of costumes. It would have doubled the work on those things… And I mean it’s something the team really wanted, but we had to make a decision. It’s unfortunate, but it’s a reality of game development.”

That really speaks to me as a buyer and player of the franchise. I don't think I need to elaborate on why here.

I don't hate on games that just have male characters but that's something I had enough of. I can stick with watching my boyfriend play those, I don't mind. I enjoy watching him play them. Games like Resident Evil do it right (or the ones I've played), and even The Last of Us, sure the main lead is the dude but there are times where the game switches to the girl's point of view. (Boyfriend let me play those parts while he played the guys)

It's just buyer's preference. Nothing "odd" here.

All female because well... I got sick of having to be mario and link all my life growing up. There wasn't many female lead character games around during that time (that I knew of).

I like to stick with my own gender in games nowadays, if I cannot be female I simply don't purchase the game. This is why I passed on Assassins Creed Unity. Couldn't be female playing multiplayer, I was looking forward playing that mode too unfortunately.

as a male I had 0 issues playing Samus or Lara Croft. I mean they're all characters used in a narrative (or relative lack of Narrative in Samus' case, just a setting), not a self insert.

Now on the other hand, I struggle to read books written by female authors. There's a lot in their voice and writing style that I can't relate to in the characters. I'd find it more weird that females can read Tolkien and George RR Martin and Robert Jordan, than play Mario or Link.

When I tried to read Anne McCaffrey or Mary Stewart, I just couldn't get into them.

The Gender of my character means nothing to me personally. However it means something to the character I play. I don't set out to play one gender or another, but in developing the character, I will make a decision one way or the other to fit the role I have for them.

I just find it natural to me in an RPG to enjoy playing both male and female characters, of many different races and backgrounds and archetypes. That's what makes RPG's interesting to me, exploration and variety

I'm thrust into a magical world with a rich history and diverse population of many distinctly different races. To limit myself to only being Imperial Male because I'm a human male IRL? Seems like I'm eliminating a huge portion of the fun of being in this non real fantasy world. Here I'm given a chance to be someone else other than myself, I get to be myself in a mundane world for 16+ hours a day, why not be someone else for a little bit every once in awhile?.

I have all male characters. Several psychology college courses and raising two daughters I'm perfectly comfortable in my sexuality, I can read books from a females point of view(even went through Judy blume and the twighlight series to make sure they're appropriate for my daughter at that age) but those stories are already made and you kinda follow along. A character I'VE created and leveling I'm creating his story from my point of view. As I'm putting myself in the story I just can't get "into" the character from a females point of view.

I'm female (don't let the name fool you, a legacy from when I first joined a male-dominated internet world, blending in was a must), and gay, and like quite a few others, playing male characters has never done it for me. I always played Peach in Mario Kart, for one. :) Wherever possible, I always made someone to resemble me IRL, they were always my main, and ESO is definitely no exception.

Of my 24 characters, all are female in gender, 22 are muscular hunks no younger than 29, and the two who are not so powerfully built are my main, a Breton of age 20 who resembles the IRL me, and my sneaky little Bosmeri thief of the same age, who is basically the dark side of me. :p

If we ever get even more character slots, I've pretty much got those characters that'll occupy them formed in my mind.

    They're not the same thing.

Gender=sex as defined by a proper dictionary, it's the modern interpretation of gender that has added new meaning to the word just as "gay" used to mean happy years ago but now implies homosexuality.
