How do you or suppose to play MMO in ESO?

I am a single player person. I don't play multiplayer games unless it's with my son or friend with split screen on the couch. When I play ESO I basically play it as a single player game. So my question is, how do you play an MMO on PC? How do you play MMO on a console, in my case Xbox One? What should I be doing? This is so foreign to me, I don't know what the protocol is, what is expected of me or what I should expect from others?

Any tips or help would be appreciated since I am trying to get more enjoyment out of the MMO part but I can't since I don't know anything about it.
Not my quote but I love this saying

MMO or MMORPGs are fluid. The nice thing is there are no rules play solo or play in a group. There are people to interact with if you choose. This is why I play. There are no expectations only what goals you set for yourself.

Well... the simple answer is to begin talking to other people and find some that you don't mind being around. Once you establish a few "friends" group up with them and do things, like taking on world bosses or entering dungeons together. You could also try going to Cyrodiil which the PvP area. There are lots of things you can do with others; what's your alliance you joined?

Just play the way you like it I guess.
I for once find a lot of enjoyment in doing competitive stuff. I like PvP and end game PvE because it's where I can measure myself with others.
But there is other people who simply like to explore the vast world and all the quests ESO has to offer, be it alone or with friends. You may want to join a guild to get to know some people with similar interests.
In the end, the only thing that matters is your preference. You like to play single player games? You can do that pretty well even if ESO is an MMO. Though you won't be able to do a few things by yourself. But most content can be done in any way you like.

Join one or more guilds. Find them by asking in your starter zone, or reading through (or posting) in the guild section of these forums. That social interaction will be your first step.

Then, move to doing group content. Grouping for world bosses is a good way to start, especially if you have the DLCs. Or group for the public dungeon in the zone you're in. Do this by asking in your guild(s) or in zone chat. You can also queue for group dungeons using the groupfinder tool, although you should put some effort into knowing your role (tank, healer, damage dealer) and what is needed from it in a group before you start the dungeons.

Play they way you want to OP.

    Having fun is #1

So If you want to explore and quest ...do that!

If you want to grind the same mobs and level up faster and skip the majority of the game do that...

If you want to PvP get to lvl 10 ( even though you consider yourself a PvE player now I have converted many alike to PvPers ) so do not clasify yourself as something merely because you are new to it

Do Dolmens, kill mobs, steal, murder, save people, save Nirn ( the world ), become a Hero

Here is the thing I like best about most of ESO.

You can group up if you want in most cases, although sometimes the sharing and synching botches up. But here is the beauty. You can play like your solo, and when you find yourself getting your teeth kicked in... An npc can come help you without even forming a party except this npc is not a computer AI. It is Joe from Wisconsin or Barbara from Rhode Island. And they themselves might be playing like a solo adventure where you are the npc.

    Simply fantastico.

Ok so once you login the intro vignette will be very similar to any normal PC game. It's there to teach mechanics and set up the story to come.
Once you are out of that you will be on a small island with pretty clear solo quests driving you forward.

Don't get hung up here on things as much as learning the ropes.

The vast majority of the game content is solo built. So you won't run out of stuff just playing it as a crowded PC game for a long while

Gradually as you get comfortable with quest and play you will be able to pay attention to the chat window, maybe join in etc IF YOU WISH. The main plots never force you out of solo play OR into PVP.

If you have specific questions message me or others and I am sure you can find help.

I play solo and would also like to find a few players to regularly group with. The problem I find is matching the hours that I can play to those of similar minded people.

Family life means that I can't commit to being on ESO at any given time. I get on when time allows, most frequently for no more than half-an-hour. Do writs, check mail and back to domestic bliss.

I sometime play for longer on a Friday or Saturday evening but again it depends on the family. Nothing much happening on Saturday morning then up to the Burnt Pig on Friday night for a few pints of dark stuff. If I'm driving Saturday morning then give the Pig a miss and play a few hours on ESO.

I can't and don't expect other players to wait around for me to show up and I can't promise to be there so I just piddle around on my own questing, crafting and trading.

As soon as you create your first character, go to the bank and try killing the guard. If you can make it passed that part, then you are MMO material (I almost quit my first day because I accidentally hit a guard and had no gold to pay my bounty ).

But seriously, just play the game. Do the quests, read some guides, but do not ( I repeat DO NOT ) read this forum. The forum is very bad for noobs; they play for a few minutes and will come here and say stuff like "NB's are OP".

Just join a casual guild where there are players like you in the guild. You clearly can't find a few players to group regularly because you can't really play the game due to your schedule. So your best chance is to be in a guild and talk in guild chat when you are available and hopefully a few others might be as well.

Wow thank you everyone, greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for all the comments, I don't feel so overwhelmed now. I am glad I am not being rude for not trying to "talk" to other people and just doing my own thing.

I have another question then. How do I talk to people? Do I just go say in the middle of town and say "Hi everyone how is everyone doing?" How do you do this on the Xbox One? I don't have my Kinect hooked up and don't have a head set. I guess if I play on the Mac I will type it out in text but how would I do it on the Xbox One?

So just say I find a person or group. What is expected then? Just play or do you have to chat/talk to this person while you play?

I've been playing ESO since beta. I mostly play solo, and when I do play with others, it's only my wife, brother, and one real-life friend. I basically never interact with anyone else in the game. I'll buy and sell stuff with guild stores, but that doesn't involve direct interaction.

You can solo most of the content in the game. If you can find 3 other people that can play with you, you can do even more.

well unfortunately on console there is no in world text, so you have to have a mic/headset or Kinect to talk to other players, there's also a emote wheel with some quick chat options.

Also, when grouping for dungeons or something, make sure to do some research into whatever role you are trying to fill. So, if you are going in as a tank, dps, or healer, make sure you know what that means, and how you can meaningfully contribute to your group.

ESO is different from other MMOs because it provides a lot of solo content.
You won't need to group with others for the most part of the leveling, which can be a looooong journey if you wish to explore the depths of every map.

Grouping is completely optional - there is content that you won't be able to do solo, and that is fine.

The only interaction that will be more or less required from you is when you want to sell items.
While some items have a generic gold value (those can be sold to Non Playable Characters), others have absolutely no value, and should be sold to other players for profit.
Meaning you need to be a member of at least one guild (you can be a member of 5 player created guilds at a time) in order to sell your items via a trader.

Nothing is expected of you in most trading guilds, you can simply put your items to sale, turn off chat and you won't be bothered if you don't want to be.
Or you can enable chat and ask anything that you might be curious about, playing an MMO is a whole other experience BECAUSE of the player interaction.
    ____

If you decide you DO want to interact with other people, there are some expectations you should fulfill.
Doing group (4-man) dungeons usually requires every player to have at least some basic knowledge of the game mechanics and strategies.
You should also pick a role (healer/tank/damage dealer) for the group content, learn how to play that role effectively and gear up accordingly.

There are many guides and videos around, as well as people that will be willing to help you as long as you are willing to learn.
The fact that you made a thread like this on the forum only shows you have enough motivation to progress.

    Happy playing!
