I need advice, or maybe a mentor

Gwumpy
Gwumpy
I play on PS4 NA, friend me if you want PSN: Gwumpy1972 . Fairly new, played about a month and don't even have a level 50. I usually duo with my wife, but her work schedule has changed so our play time is severely limited. I want to find a job that I can solo with while she isn't here. I want something that is for pve with good dps and survivability. The more simple the rotation, the better. I am disabled and have issues with my controller skills sometimes. I would love any helpful advice and build links. I have sorcerer with my wife so I would prefer something different. Someone suggested magicka DK, but the guides all seem to be a year old when I Google it. Again- solo only, pve only, simple is good, and if I can farm with it that is a bonus. I am broke, can't even afford my next bag upgrade, so I will take gold making advice too.

Thank you for taking time to read this,
Gwumpy

If you're a sorc and like to solo, pet builds are perfect.

A bit more on the simple side too, push a button once every 4 secs type of game play.

I personally run one that pretty much only has DoTs and AoEs, so not as much button slammin. A slightly older version is in my signature.

About making gold: Most of the top players will recommend stealing blue etc items from store lock boxes etc... I personally like running repeatable simple quests, they don't pay as well but really simple.

Surprisingly my treasure chest hunting has made me the most gold. Running around Wrothgar just grabbin chests made me about 20k in 4 hours.

I hope I helped, unfortunately im xbox, but feel free to use the @name to summon me, or message me if you have any questions.

For an easy, survivable build, roll a Templar. It doesn't get much easier. The first skill in each class line can take you through most situations from level 1 to 50. Jabs heals as it kills, and works better with more enemies. Add Bridge of Life for heals, and you're golden. I've pushed every class to level 50 and the Templar was the easiest by far. As a plus, you can add templar heals when you play with your spouse for an even better team.

For gold, start by spending only on inventory space, unless you have a Craft bag. Don't repair until you have high level gear....repair is a gold sink. Don't buy from NPC vendors, use drops and rewards to outfit yourself. Harvest all resources. Even if you choose not to craft ( a bad decision ), the mats can be sold in guild stores or to NPC vendors, whoever has better price. Join a trade guild, sell those mats and other high value items. Check the guild sales history for an idea of which items are moving and how much. Take up fishing...for every hundred fish you fillet (on average), you'll get a Perfect Roe that sells quickly for lots of gold. Farm motifs, especially from new DLC. Motif prices always start high, and usually sell well for new content. Chests and quests are low hanging fruit for gold. Plenty of other ideas, do a forum search.

I played for two years before having a vet (err past level 50) character.

If you are enjoying it, it's all good.

My favorite solo build currently is an Altmer Sorc with pets. I choose my armor to max magicka; Last three slots on both bars are: Ward (the 10 second one), Clanfear (healing morph), Twilight Matriarch (healing morph).
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Thank you for the suggestions. I run a pet build with my wife's templar and I worry that I may get burned out if I do another one. I do love those pets though. I think I may try a templar. If I did get in a group, what role do they play? Can they efficiently dps? Or do they get relegated to healing or tanking? @Ourorboros is there a top 3 races you would pick for a templar? And why?

I have a few guilds but it seems they fall into about 4 types. 1. Very cliquish, they break into their groups and don't talk to anyone else. 2. Trade guilds that want money to bid on traders to sell our wares. Never know for sure where the money goes. 3. Ones that have a lot of members but only do vet level activities. The couple I stumbled upon like this are strictly ran. We do this at this time, be ready with your equipment and supplies. Anyone not v14 or higher with all purple or better excluded. 4. The great guild that you like and connect with, fun had by all. Then all the members leave the game. 72 people in the guild but only 1 or 2 on, depends if my wife is logged in to make it two or not. My friend owns that one, I have been thinking about asking him if I can have it and try to resurrect it.

I know this isn't every guild, just a small sampling of what I have ran into. I will go searching for a friendly guild @AverageJo3Gam3r and see how I do. I would love to meet some people to play with.

Thank you all again for your advice.

If you want something simple with high survivability then Magix nb is what you want. Can provide extremely high dps numbers while maintaning enough heals that you never need a healer with you! It's the easiest thing to do Veternal maelstrom arena with (if you ever plan to farm it) and it is a very simple rotation in comparison to other classes. Small amount of dots to keep up and pretty easy gear to get! You can easily do all the content in the game with 5 Julianos, jewelry of your choice as well as a 2 neirenth or other set you choose. Optimal set up would be 5 twice born star with the shadow and thief mundus stones all light armor all divines, neirenth 2 piece 1 heavy 1 medium both in divines, and will power jewelry all arcane or healthy! BTW a good way to get gold when DB hits for console is to farm normal Sactum ophidia or if you don't like that you can grind mobs that drop scraps (raw medium armor mats) that you can refine to get dreugh wax as the price will go up significantly in DB. Hope this helped!

@The_Rooster24 can you send me a link to the build? I tried a stamina nb, but had some trouble with it. I liked the thought of making it kind a ranger with a bow. It is left at 14 right now, I could reset points and try magic, if it will work with a cat. Or just start over completely.

    Thank you for the suggestion.

Top picks for any magicka based build is Altmer and Breton, due to racial passives benefiting magic. I run an Imperial Templar, which has less DPS but more survivability.

If you follow the advice above about selling gold tempers, be sure to put max points into extraction to get the best chance for the tempers from refining. Dreugh Wax is good, but Tempering Alloy is better....sells for much more and very quickly if not overpriced. A very reliable gold source. Just be sure to hold back enough for your own upgrade needs.

What @Ourorboros said is true, with a magicka templar you can get it better to complete all content in the game easily, with decent survival.

When you reach veteran and group content you will hit a wall Dragonknight, Nightblade and Sorcerer classes - because it's required that you get a good rotation of skills, learn weaving´and animation cancelling, but with a magicka templar you can do decent dps with a 1-button spam. If you have disability or controller issues, then magicka templar is definetly the best choice for you.

Try to socialize a little and get some friends in the game. Once you have played a little around, or talked to people then you can ask them if they know of an active social guild you can join. That is in my experience the best way of finding good guilds.

Templar build and economy questions will take too long for me to type right now.. I'm in a hurry right now, but I will return to these topics later if you still have some interest.

Quick rundown of my opinion for you:

    Magic sorc:

Pets build -> fun but lack of burst damage and low survive without pets

Shield build -> takes management, but high dps high defense

Burst build -> very high damage, but shield stacking is gone pretty much needs group to be effective

    Stam sorc:

N/A for new solo players to survive solo imo

    Magic templar:

BoL build -> This light armor build can heal you to full in one spell, plus you have sick regen

burst build -> You can get some really high damage with a templar, but it takes some management, stick with the healer version if you want to go solo

    Stamina templar

Easy mode, really. With a mix of medium/heavy you won't die, do massive damage and have enough magic to heal yourself back up. This currently is the easiest class to play imho.

    Magic DK:

tanky build: Spec into heavy armor and use your CC/DOTS to chip away at people. Super survive, you basically won't ever die with this build, but damage is pretty sub-par and you rely on DOTS more than anything.

fire build: Not recommended for beginner

    Stam DK:

tanky - high mitigation, high damage, low mobility.

bow/2h -> my personal pick for a stam DK, range attack and close defense makes for a really good hybrid damage dealer.

    Magic NB

Magic NB are incredibly bursty and have decent self heals solo with their class skills. Cloak will get you out of trouble and the sneak skills get you past mobs you don't want to fight. Their AOE is top notch and they can murder a single target better than anyone else. NBs are typically more squishy, but they have the ability to vanish, which gives them the upper hand.

    Stam NB,

Incredibly bursty and even more squishy than the magic NB, the stam NB is all about that initial burst. Attack from stealth and kill or be killed.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

I agree with the others who have recommended a Magicka Templar. If you go with the below you probably won't even need to switch bars during fights:
    - Puncturing Sweeps (main DPS whilst healing)
    - Toppling Charge (gap closer)
    - Vampires Bane or Dark Flare (ranged DPS)
    - Honour the Dead (heal)
    - Radiant Oppression (execute)

Puncturing, Dark Flare and Radiant are all high damaging channelled abilities so you have at least one second before you need to press them again, rather than pressing as quickly as possible like Surprise Attack on StamNBs.

You could then have an off-bar of shields (Harness Magicka, Healing Ward and even Immovable for more resistance) and ground abilities (Radiant Aura, Cleansing Ritual, Channelled Focus etc) just to buff you up before you engage and draw the adds to you.

Gear-wise: any crafted Magicka sets (Seducer, Magnus, Julianos and Kagrenacs) in 7 light or 5 light and 2 heavy will be suitable.

DW if you want more damage, a Resto if you want extremely easy heavy attacks (literally just hold it down) and better Magicka management or S&S if you want more resistance. I'd recommend Resto because it gives the ability for

For me, I run two different types of sorc/tank builds (don't even ask me how many accounts/characters I have - serious alt-o-holic here). One is the defensive where I use the morphs that heal, and the 10 second ward. This is a very solitary build; keeps me alive running around in Craglorn, and passes the Wasp Test (if you can solo a group of wasps, you'll do okay).

Another is a more offensive build; using the morphs that are attack morphs, along with daedric Prey to enhance their attacks; this build is a bit low on self-healing; it's more successful in a group and I go for the more damaging combinations.

I've also run (rarely) a sorc healer; between fountain of blood (undaunted) and the healing staff and a few things it works - IF you have a coordinated group that won't hare off in all directions; or if your PUG group is heavy on DPS so you don't have to sustain over longer fights.

Templar - what do you want to do? Stamina and Magicka Templars are very different beasties. I've seen awesome Templar Healing or DPS (but not from the same build, usually).

Decent templar dps build with off-healing, very good for survival and works in most groups for level 45-cp160:
Restoration Staff (provides access to cheap heals over time, which is good:
    • Structured Entrophy (Mage Guild ability: Increases your max magicka and max health, and if you don't have expensive Spell Power potions, use this skill to provide yourself with Major Sorcery, to gain 20% extra spell power.)
    • Blazing Spear (Aedric Spear ability: Good AoE skill, and it stuns easy and mob enemies. If your friend picks up the spear, he gets 25% stamina and some stamina regen. )
    • Rapid Regeneration (Restoration Staff ability: Provides a Heal-over-Time which is nice, and makes it easier for you to regain ultimate.)
    • Breath of Life (Restoring Light ability: Heals 2 targets, the person with the lowest health gets the big heal and the other gets half of that. It's the best burst-heal in the game)
    • Inner Light (Mage Guild ability: Increases your max magicka and spell critical chance.)
    • Ultimate: Solar Disturbance (Dawns Wrath ability: for the heavy fights where enemies give a lot of damage, cast this and the enemy will have reduced their damage for a few seconds.)

Dual Wield swords (You only need to wear the weapon and spend point in 2 passives: Dual Wield Expert and Twin Blade and Blunt to increase your spell damage, no need to slot any of the skills from this weapon skill line when you are a magicka templar.)
    • Structured Entrophy (Mage Guild ability: Increases your max magicka and max health, and if you don't have expensive Spell Power potions, use this skill to provide yourself with Major Sorcery, to gain 20% extra spell power.)
    • Puncturing Sweep (Aedric Spear ability: Provides a good single-target dps and decent cone AoE. If your healer isn't healing you enough, go in melee range and use this skill on bosses, because it will heal you while you deal damage with it.)
    • Dark Flare (Dawns Wrath ability: This will be your main dps skill in group dungeons, unless the healing and tanking in the group is lacking, then you can use Puncturing Sweep for survival ...otherwise stay at long range and spam this skill.)
    • Radiant Glory (Dawns Wrath ability: Great execution skill that heals you. It starts doing significant damage when enemies are below 50% health and when the enemies fall below 25% health it deals even more damage. The other morph provides better dps, but this morph is the best one because it gives you self heals.)
    • Inner Light (Mage Guild ability: Increases your max magicka and spell critical chance.)
    • Ultimate: Ice Comet (Mage Guild ability: Increases your max magicka and deals decent damage.)

    Gear:
    5 pieces of Julianos set
    1 piece Molag Kena
    2-3 piecesTorugs Pact (including weapons)
3 Willpower jewelry with reduced magicka cost enchantments.

    Shadow Mundus stone.
All attributes and armor enchants in Max Magicka.

    5 lightarmor pieces, 1 heavy, 1 medium.

This is not the most optimal dps build, but it is decent, easily achieveable and you can deal between 17k-35k dps with this, depending on your group.

    How to level up:
5 light armor pieces, 1 heavy armor piece, 1 medium armor piece.
If you get fortunate enough, you can buy or get a friendly guildie to craft you: 5 pieces of the Seducer set, the rest including weapons be Torugs Pact set.
Mundus Stone: The Atronach (it's located in Greenshade in Aldmeri Dominion faction, Shadowfen in Ebonheart Faction, Rivenspire in Daggefall Covernant faction ...ask your friends or guildies if anyone can give you a little port there.. all you need to do, is to group with them and teleport to them ..it's free port to the nearby wayshrine, google the location of the mundus stone and go there.)

    Build:
Weapon: slot whatever weapon you wish to level up first:
    • Puncturng Strikes (morph it later to Puncturing Sweep)
    • Rushed Ceremony (morph it later to Breath of Life)
    • Sun Fire (any morph is good)
    • Random skill you want to level up.
    • Random skill you want to level up.
    • Ultimate: Random ultimate skill you want to level up.

About economy: I copied a little part of a guide I wrote about this issue and changed it a bit... sorry for not putting it in the same post as above, but since the post is long I figured scrolling will be easier this way :p

    Economy:
I strongly recomend you to join a trading guild, if you wish to cash in gold and sell your gear. You can use zonechat if you are a pc player, or go to crowded places and try to sell your stuff if you are a console player - but a trading guild with a somewhat sensible trader location can save you that trouble.

Location of the traders have an impact on what sort of stuff you will sell most off, and in what amounts. Traders at locations where lost of veterans go, sell more items in stacks of 200 than traders in other locations. Green and Blue upgrade materials sell less to veterans, than lower levels ....

    Sales through guild trader:
    • Green to Blue improvement materials and potency runes sell best at low level areas and in small stacks of 10-50.
    • Purple to gold improvement materials and potency runes sell best at veteran trading guilds, located in the more busy parts of the game, such as Belkarth in Craglorn or the capital cities where lots of veteran players go to pick up their pledges. They sell in all stack sizes, but usually the smaller amount the higher price, as the ones that have stacks of 200 keep their prices low to get rid of it - due to lack of inventory space.
    • Recipes of all levels sell good everywhere, specially lower tier blue and purple recipes.
    • Crafted food, drinks and potions that are used for writs. However they don't sell for much. Crafted xp-potions and Orzorga food and drinks are an exception though.
    • Provisioning materials, but they sell best in large stacks and it can be argued that saving the headache and not collecting these are best, as you can easily go to a dungeon and farm loot you can vendor faster than having to save those materials to stack them and sell them after some time.
    • Flowers sell good, specially the ones that are used for spell power potions and tristat potions. Columbine goes for 300g-500g per flower, because many endgame players depend on potions to keep their resources and damage up.
    • Looted set armor, weapons and jewelry sell for good money, however it is hard to sell. Many players don't want to bother searching through guildstore clutter for specific items, and they just go with crafted gear untill they reach endgame content. Usually the only "easy" sellable low level set item is Warlock, specially the rings sell for good money.
    • Do not craft set armor and set them for sale in a guildtrader, it sells bad usually. Ask around if anyone needs a crafter for specific items, and craft on demand, so you don't waste your time and efford.
    • Raw materials: sell good everywhere. Max levelled crafters run around and search for these, and they pay good cash for it everywhere on the map. Rough Wood goes for 13g-20g, Raw Cloth and Leather goes for 26g-35g, Ore goes for 31g-55g.
    • Potency runes of all levels sell for reasonable good prices.
    • Essense runes sell good too, but check out the prices of the individual type of essense rune. Some of them, such as Makderi is only gained through farming the runes or getting a rare glyph for deconstruction, they can not be obtained by buying glyphs at a vendor and extracted by deconstruction. So makderi usually has a higher price than other runes (50g-500g).
    • Bait for fishing sells well everywhere, but the prices go up and down on them. You can alternatively use the bait to fish with, and sell the cought white fish instead, or fillet the cought white fish and sell the Perfect Roe and the provisioning ingredient also called Fish.

DISCLAIMER: my pricing information is based on PC/ EU prices. These things vary a bit depending on wether you play on XBox, PS4 or PC and wether you play in NA or EU.

Feel free to add me, I usually pay nights and weekends. I have a VR16 DK and a few mid 30 toons that I am more than willing to run with you.

I cannot add much on what everyone else here is saying, its all great tips. I enjoy completing a zone fully before moving on. Helps running through the VR stuff, but that is all gone next week. But you will end up have a bunch of skill points to play with and its nice to morph something right away and not have to wait for skill points to do it.

Money will end up piling up. I didnt buy a single thing until VR16. My lvl 30 sorc already has 20K gold.

    • You use Dual Wield to increase your spell damage, and keep that for your main bar.
    • Destruction Staff is good to level up, in case you should want to increase your dps in the future, but it is mainly used to cast dots and you'll need a veteran Maelstrom Arena fire staff to pull it off good - which is a long solo dungeon and very hard to beat, the RNG for the sharpened fire staff is also very bad.
    • Restoration staff is only for backup cheap heals, and very good to level up as well.

So main weapon: Dual Wield .
Optional secondary weapons: Destruction Fire Staff/ Restoration Staff.

You can also choose to run Dual Wield on both bars,.

Just don't slot any Dual Wielding skills on your bar, as you will deal too little damage with them if you run a magicka build. Slot instead Templar class skills and Mage Guild skills.

Here's a link to a decent website that explains the individual skills that I explained in my little guide for you, it's pretty neat...

Np man, I would use either Breton or altmer but if you're doing solo only any race will work. And that is just a basic set up for magic nb! No build but I'm sure you can find a decent one on the forums!
