@ Names in Nameplates and Why It's Rage Inducing to RP'ers

Agreed and will be looking at the above listed add on.

For people that might not be interested in a full-featured UI addon like Azurah, I have uploaded a tiny standalone addon called RP Target Frame which will simply remove the @accountname from the target frame with no configuration required whatsoever (besides making sure it is checked in your addon list).

    Hope it helps!

You are a savior until they fix it base game side. Thank you so much!

I thought the main issue wasn't seeing @ names of others but of them seeing yours?

As far as I understand it the add-on, while extremely useful and welcome, will not do that and so others can still see your own @ name and add you/whisper you/spam you/harass you etc. My advice is to deal with it, purely because ZOS won't move on this change until you can get the entire RP community to voice their demands for change on the forums, and even then it's a maybe.

These changes are because ZOS started with avoiding classic MMO features and tools before realising that to pander to their core review demographic it was time to become more like every other MMO out there and ditch their initial vision.

Also add-ons, almost everyone uses add-ons.

You must admit that this change clearly illustrates the huge chasm between what they say say and actually do. Thoughts go back to a relatively recent article where a certain 'high-up' ZoS member proudly and loudly touted their love for Roleplay and how they want keep that at the forefront of decisions.

Just another small step, that takes this game further and further away from it's ES roots (and in a bad way).

Here's an idea ZoS; if you're trying to find work for employees work on new content. Stop adding completely useless additions to the game that are utterly and obviously counter to what your PR people spew as the verbal diarrhea that is supposed to pass for 'open and honest communication' we read on various sites such as MMORPG.COM, and move them to actually parts of the game that require improvement/change.

It's painfully clear, once again that ZoS says ones thing, yet delivers on another.

When you are roleplaying, more often than not you will go into offline mode to try and hide from everyone on your character,. You don't want people walking in and immediately knowing who you are. Or you simply don't want to go into whisper hell. The new change to the nameplates is all fine and dandy until you get to that cringe-worthy section: The @ name viewer.

I can't be the only one that wants to bring in a new toon that wouldn't be outright recognized by the RP community because of an option that really doesn't need to be there to begin with. They have friends lists so you can have someones @ names on.

Good to know I'm not the only one. At first I thought the new head plates would be a good addition because you can see who's standing at the opposite end of a room (usually, if you focus them the only thing showing up is "rat" or whatever is in the way). Then I realized the the @account won't disappear if you set yourself to offline or if you're introducing a new plot NPC ... oh no!

To the people who say that metagaming is a big no-no and you can just ignore it: I don't believe in it and I'm the kind of person who would rather be surprised as a player than pretending to be surprised as my char. It's hard enough as it is to prepare surprising elements for people with all the porting, phasing and grouping that is going on. And with everybody being in the same meta guilds anyway.

I guess it's easier to report hackers now, but it might also lead to more trolling and harrassment. In my other game I set myself to offline if I PvP and there's a reason for that - so people can't whisper insults to me, even if I said Hi in chat before.

Wasn't there a single intern to look at and say "Hey guys, MAYBE we should, you know, not ruin the UI?", really? And even if no one in the office thought that maybe you should stay true to your initial proposal of a minimalist UI and make everything toggleable, a big number of players on PTS forums pointed that out, so I can't understand how this absolutely abysmal-looking change made it to live.

By the way, OP, this community is generally friendly to Role Players. Don't worry about saying you are one.

Yes, clutter, clutter, clutter. That was my first thought when I saw the change in action. It looks like your character name isn't so important anymore. With all information displayed by default, it just disappears.

I may also add that group tags in Cyrodiil now have a face-icon, wasting a tiny precious space, so not many names are even readable. :(

Well hopefully I'm not going to get a ton of spam because my @name shows. I can see that being really annoying. And the ONLY valid reason for wanting to change this back to how it was. Too many people enjoy being "anonymous" because they can act like an arse on one character and then come in on another and no one realizes they were the person being the arse. This changes all that and may make people a little more aware of their actions. Which is not a bad thing.

I don't care too much about immersion nor do I RP but I have to agree that all that nameplate info looks terrible. Please go back to how it was, or give us an option to make it that way.

The @names showing are bad, cluttered and messy. The floating names are worse. I would never turn them on, they look like something from Wow in the mid 90s.

I don't think anyone asked for it, ever. I wonder if the people who are fine with it are also of the younger set and used to seeing so much useless information floating around they don't notice the artistic mess.

I don't RP, but as a PC user I was really unhappy with this change. Now I understand what the console folks were QQing about for so long. Standing in the bank all you see are stupid RW names all over the place. I hate it.
    Thanks for the addon, tho!

To me it is a little weird, because my account name makes pretty clear that I am female. I do not have a problem with being female, but I have as well one male Argonian and it feels a little weird, if the fact, that he is played by a woman is right in the face of people. I want to be able to choose, to whom I reveal my actual gender. It is ok though, if it can be seen by guildies and friends, they know it anyway - but it does not have to be right in the face of strangers, who might treat me differently due to that fact. If I play a male role, I would like to have a chance to actually play and experience that character in that role.

A real roleplayer disconsider even character name labels, people do not have nameplates in real life, if you want to know someone's name, ask them or ask someone or eavesdrop, etc.

I completely agree... although on PS4 you always have your gamer-tag, it is merely a console problem, while on PC I see no reason as to not have an option to choose how you like to display your characters.

I cant even believe ZOS didnt come up with the idea that some people may not want to have their account name in world... I feel as if they dont think about SO MANY things and just fix everything later but I am beginning to rant...

I don't RP on ESO and I barely play it on PC, but I have to agree. The @name should be optional. If my BattleTag was visible on my characters, on World of Warcraft, I'd hate that!

I think it would be nice to be able to choose not to show it on your character. I know that you can find @ names many different ways, but I just feel it would be fairer to have the option.

At first I didn't think this change would affect me at all, but I realised that it has in a very small way. I don't really RP very much, however I have a couple of characters that are what I would call "Joke" characters. They were created for fun and their names are part of their overall silliness, I don't play them very often at all, but if I do ever feel like jumping on one of them to walk around and make a few people laugh when they see me, its going to have less impact now as people will see my account name first, before the character, or alongside it. Basically they will read one or the other, and miss the first impression of the joke. So basically I'm even less likely to use those characters. But as said, this is a very minor thing and in no way effects my gaming experience.

RP Target Frame just got an update!

I added a simple configuration menu to Addon Settings, and the option to hide the @accountname from the player interaction frame as well (the one when you are close and it says "Press to interact" where you get the wheel to trade, whisper, etc.).

You can toggle hiding the @accountname from either independently.

If anyone finds any more places to hide it let me know. :)

    @Phinix1

    Works great thanks!

There is already an option in the games own nameplate settings to turn of titles. Is this not the same thing?

I have it switched on to only targeted people get nameplates.

I find it easier to find someone when the name appears just above the cursor, rather than have to glance "away" from the cursor at some other part of the screen to see if they are a banker or merchant etc... Or while you are glancing away they move off the cursor and you have to glance back down to the cursor to get them re-centered then glance back up etc...

yeah, this shouldn't be a necessary thing. IDGAF about what everyone's @name is. if they don't want to show it, why should they have to? I'm a PVPer so i don't mind having mine up, but for RP? absolutely. let them take it off. it's just a damn UI label.
