That's not the case -
The Dwemer disappeared following the events of Red Mountain, which itself was due to the ambitions of the Dwemer and the conquest of the First Council
The Dunmer (then Chimer) were condemned to their ashen skin and racial peculiarities as a consequence of the same battle at Red Mountain where three of the members of the First Council chose to betray their promise with Azura and ascend to become the Tribunal - their own faults, not the Altmer!

Truth! Altmer were innocent!
Men defeated ayleids!
Men defeated snow elves!
Men defeated high elves!
Men united all the Tamriel under single banner!
Man become god!
Elf started planemeld, elf started oblivion crisis, elf tried to unmake the world, elves are slavers! So noble!
How ironic...
"Humans are all short-lived. Ephemeral, as we of the Elder Races say. They come and go as the seasons -- but the families of the powerful ones live on for a time. Their cities and dominions bloom like spring flowers, only to wither and die in the summer sun. But the Elves endure. We are as a year to their hour, a decade to their day." ―Drelliane to Queen Barenziah

The Dunmer (Chimer) started a war with the Dwemer over the fact they were atheists and were building the Numidium. The Three and Nerevar used the fact that the Dwemer werent Daedric Worshippers, and they were building the Numidium to spur on support for their real interest which was getting ahold of the Heart of Lorkhan.
Theres no telling how things would of played out had the Chimer not laid siege to Red Mountain, but the reason the Dwemer struck the Heart of Lorkhan was out of desperation after their military defeat. Its quite possible that had the Dwemer not been forced into a corner over the Numidium they may have been able to study the Heart long enough to realize striking it would have been a disasterous mistake. Unfortunately, the events didnt play out that way and the Dwemer are now gone because the Chimer and their leaders were reacting out of fear, assumptions and a self interest in power.
Some could argue that the Chimers actions against the Dwemer lead to their disappearance/extinction and that they hold responsibility for that.

I think of Elves as much as I think of Argonians!
They're better off dead or enslaved.
This one will let you continue believing that, but we all know khajiit are the true rulers of tamriel.
