Here's how you do it without shutting down the server or letting it get out of hand: DISABLE ALL TRADING GLOBALLY FOR A FEW HOURS and then shut it down for patch.
They already said they have the relevant data tracked that lets them know who abused it, so the only reason to patch it is that it gets out of hand if the exploiters start trading away their exploited materials. If all forms of trading are disabled, there is no damage done and they can get banned later without ruining everyone's friday night.
But yeah, I assume nobody was bright enough at ZOS to implement these useful emergency global blocks, a shame.
Is there any evidence that they're even capable of globally disabling trade? Or, if they are, of doing so while servers are live?
And even if there is, trade is a major part of the game. If they disabled trade for a few hours, these forums would be full of people with actual cause to complain complaining instead of what we have right now, a few selfish people insisting that getting their way is more important than the good of the overall game.
Seriously, just stop. There is no argument to be made that you guys are right on this, and the more you keep trying to find one, the worse you guys look.
Can you explain how not playing at all is worse than playing but not trading at all?
I assume you meant to say better instead of worse. And yes, I can.
Immediately fixing the issue gets everyone back into a functioning properly (at least regarding this issue) game as soon as possible. Disabling trading, if it's even doable, has players in the game unable to do a significant percentage of the game until it's convenient to fix. Maybe that doesn't matter to you, but there are plenty of players who value trading. There's even a notable number of players who consider trading their main activity. For them, the game would be hobbled and broken for several hours just for your convenience.
I swear, actually thinking about other people besides yourself isn't a difficult. I don't understand why so many people seem incapable of it.

Nice double standards, Mr. Shekelstein, but for most people playing the actual game comes over trading so it would be better for ZOS to just temp disable trading. Looks like YOU are the one incapable of thinking about other people.
So you're saying they should take the server down, disable all guild traders, player-to-player trading, mail attachments and guild banks, bring the server back up, wait until a convenient time for you, take the server down again, re-enable all trading and fix the exploit? As opposed to just take the server down and fix the exploit?
Really?

Oh, I don't know.clocksstoppe wrote: »I didn't say they would disable guild banks. What's the point in that?
This whole thread is pointless.
The forums are filled with whiney threads "ZOS, FIX YOUR BROKEN GAME".
So ZOS actually says "Yea we are listening. Here we will fix it."
So the forums go "HOW DARE YOU TAKE THE SERVER DOWN TO FIX IT."
I'm sure people at ZOS are just facepalming reading this

Maybe store the "illegally gained mats" in there?

My bad, i thought you meant player banks. Yeah guild banks as well. But regardless, seems like they don't have this functionality in their servers. So as an MMO server developer they are doing a pretty terrible job.

Just what is this about?
From what I understood...
It was possible to get a writ survey report.[snip]
Not sure how long this had been possible (maybe it has always been ?) but the info was spreading like wildfire and if they hadn't acted on this in emergency many people would have spent the whole night harvesting resources that way.
Not sure it would have been "game breaking" or "destroying the economy" for I can understand that ZOS doesn't want to have to ban or undertake disciplinary actions against thousands and thousands of players.
[edited for exploit details]
A reason more they should reward every player with something that was not involved in the exploit.
If they won't punish the bad apples, they SURELY can reward the good folks?
Same coin, different side.
