How To remove a large bounty

Here is my two tips on how to remove a very large bounty.
Today l had a bounty around 1500 gold and its still at 400 gold and droping.
To speed things up l needed to make money.
At first l just killed enemrys and collected the gold they droped. Once l got to 100 gold l would let the cops kill me and they took my 100 gold of me to go to paying off my large bounty.
My other tip is to do quests and misions as they pay out money as well.
Forget selling stuff at shops as they don't trade when your got a large bounty.
Forget using the bank when your got a bounty too.
I hope these two tips help others out.

Go find some thieves troves and they have a chance to have a bounty remover thing inside of them.
You could I think get cleared up to 15k in bounty.
Just by useing one that has that ability I think its a legendary find though.
But they are not as rare as people might think.
Thing that sucks about them is they are not sell able to other players.

while my bounties are yet to reach 1500. Found just venturing around, completing quests (outside cities/towns with guards), roaming through delves reduced bounties nicely, simply through time played. You can obtain counterfeit pardon edicts from troves. Fence them. Each one removes 500g from your bounty.

Start another character and play it until your main character's bounty ends.
At some time I had over 20k bounty on my head by messing with peasants and guards in the city, and I had to leave this alt for about a week to have all the bounty taken off.
Having more than one active character helps, and I have 8 :).

Leveling your Thieves Guild skill line gets you access to a passive that removes up to 115 bounty every 3 minutes. You need to be online with that character, though. Other than that, bounty will always decrease with time, so you can log on another character and wait it out.

The legendary pardon edict is a one-off reward for the Thieves Guild. It clears 100k bounty at once but I don't think you'll ever get another. There are other edicts that clear 500 bounty (blue, found in Thieves Troves) or 2000 bounty (purple, found more rarely in Troves and as Thieves Guild quest rewards).

I never understood why people get ridiculously high bounties like that. I mean if you go on a mass killing spree out of sheer boredom it'll go that high but then why complain about the high bounty when you purposefully did something like that.

There's a bunch of reasons to build a large bounty. Plenty of achievements provoke bounties.

    Killing 1 / 50 / 100 citizens, escape a guard 1 / 100 times, kill a cow / guar / pig / chicken or bantam / goat or sheep will all make for sizable bounties. Then there are the failures that will happen along the way to picking 1 / 50 / 100 doors, pickpocketing 1 / 100 / 1000 people, looting 1 / 10 / 100 safeboxes...

    Also, coldharbour has no guards.

Just picked up the achievements for Make Amends (guard), Disrobed Discipline, and Indecent Exposure in one fell swoop.

Actually you just avoid bounties by not killing and looting in public spaces without being hidden. You can sneak, use invisibility potions etc. but people choose not to.

The only legerdemain achievements were a bounty is needed are:
    • Make Amends
    • Indecent Exposure
    • Felonious Recompense
    • Escape Artist
The highest bounty you need at 1 time is 1000g to get the Make Amends achievement.

Not sure how anyone would consider 1500 a HIGH bounty? Considering it is absolutely SO easy to earn gold in this game... whenever I get a bounty, I normally just go to the Outlaw Refuge fence and pay it off right away- that way I never have to worry about losing my hard-earned or high-profit stolen items. Or, if you're like me and specialize in killing sheep for 'stolen' guts/meat to launder and level Legerdemain skill line, then you are always carrying a high quantity of stolen items waiting for the launder timer to reset. Last night was the first time I opted to flee a guard, mainly because I didn't want to surrender my stolen items... wasn't too difficult, thankfully I had my Bow equipped and that Hasty Retreat passive certainly paid off. ;)

The largest I ever had was 400,000 gold. I think it took appx 3 weeks to wear off on it's own.

Apart from that there are 2 things you can do to avoid bounties...

    1. Do not be seen while doing anything illegal.
    2. See above point no1.

Apart from these you are good to go.

I was collecting food for provising for about 6 hours as l wanted to level it up as much as possible in one day. It took me about 6 hours to remove that bounty. My provising went up 8 levels in one go so it was worth it. I was not willing to sneek for 6 hours strait. After the first hour l said stuff it and said ok to a biger and biger bounty.

The one thing that bothers me about this is you need an invisibility potion to go through a door when a guard is chasing you.

Still waiting on my one character. I talked some sense into him when he hit 1.6 mil bounty. Right now he's at 700k. The TG passive to speed up bounty loss is helping, but it's still taking a while.

It's not actually that hard to get such a high bounty. There are places in the game where you can farm innocent people for their drops (white/gold stolen items) and then fence them to work towards the Justice achievements. it's relatively easy to end up with 100,000g extra bounty every few minutes.

"Large bounty" is more in the range of 20-30 million. At that point, your character is going to be a permanent criminal, as it would take several years to go away on its own.

When it is only a few thousand or so, it will disappear rather quickly on its own as long as you don't kill NPCs and avoid guards.

There were a few people in Glenumbra complaining about large bounties (though I suspect some were trolling). Regardless, a few insights into prevention and cure here.

First, and most importantly, ENABLE "PREVENT ATTACKING INNOCENTS" in game settings. -- Single largest thing you can do as a new player to offset the "Oops, I murdered again" syndrome that comes with misclicking around neutral NPCs. Or seeing if your healing staff heals the target (it doesn't.)

After that, prevention boils down to "don't get caught," as others have said. Know your stealth mode.

As for cure, not everyone (especially new players) have access to the new Thieves Guild DLC to unlock Troves, so a few handy resources...

Equipment Breakdowns & Crafting: Look for Set Crafting Stations out in the world. You'll be able to break down and craft things here if you can't get to a crafting station in town. Enchanting and Alchemy will be more difficult to finangle, but Provisioning can be done at some campfires scattered about. If you have Provisioning recipes, you could scavenge for ingredients or go fishing, cook them up, then sell the food at a merchant in a Refuge. You can also sell fish for its base value if crafted food would net you less money. Trophy fish sell for a greater amount.

Equipment Sales: As others have mentioned, there is a merchant and a fence in Outlaw Refuges, and there is always one Refuge door that is outside of town and away from guards.

Banking: Again, in Outlaw Refuges, you can find access to a bank. However, you cannot access Guild Banks here, so bear that in mind if you want to access a guild bank for additional storage and/or access the Guild Store for sales. That limits some of your income, but isn't relevant if you aren't in a trade guild.

Not Learning Your Lesson: If all else fails, sometimes stealing can be a great way to earn the coin you need to pay off the bounty you picked up from stealing! ...Yeah, that makes no logical sense, but it works if you can find a place without any guards. Transitions reset containers, and entering a Refuge counts as a transition, so you can loop back and forth into and out of a Refuge.

Don't forget, you can pay your bounty at a Fence, it doesn't have to be at a Guard.

    Hope that helps some.

I may easily be wrong, but doesn't getting killed by a guard get rid of your bounty? If so, just sell all your stolen junk to a fence and just get killed.

Getting killed only puts you on the ground, arrested. The guard then takes whatever gold you have and puts it toward your bounty. If your bounty is 10,000 but you've only got 8,000 on you, getting killed will make your bounty 2,000 and you won't have any gold in your pocket. It's not a method of getting the bounty cleared for free.

And you can access all of your guild banks at the banker in coldharbour, where there are no guards. You do NOT have to sneak into a town if you need something from a guild bank.
