Mount question......

I want to upgrade my mount (purchase another!) however I have spent a considerable amount of money on my current one lol upgrading its speed and so on... Does that stuff carry over? Or do you have to upgrade each mount as you get them?

Carries over. The riding skill is tied to your character. New characters you make on the same account will have the mounts, but will not have the riding skills.

this they used to be based on the mount with separate upgrades now instead of upgrading the horse it is your skill at riding the horse/mount. so it will carry over on any mount you choose like me I switch between imperial horse and nightmare one and I keep my stats for riding. new chars will start at 0/0/0 riding skill even if you use the crown store items to upgrade. because that char has not learned how to ride a mount efficiently yet.

I also have a question related to mounts...do any of the mounts, crown store or bought in game start out with default riding stats? For example does the bay dun horse start out with higher riding speed since its description is "bread for speed and agility"? Or is the only difference purely cosmetic

Pure cosmetic at this point. Back in the day there were some differences in stats at the start, no longer. Every mount purchased will start with the stats you have already leveled in riding skills. If it's your first mount, zero across the board.
